Personally I think the Wii generation starts and ends here. How many casual gamers (moms, grans, and the like) do you think will buy the Wii-2....when the old wii works so well and has so many games they can play to death(wii sports, fit, play). The casual gamer will be satisfied with their crap party titles for years to come, for a much longer time than the average console lifetime.
I bought the Wii for one reason. The PS3 was too expensive. After years with my PS1 and 2, this is my first Nintendo ever. Provided The Wiii (or whatever they call it) doesn't cost $200 more than any other next gen to cover some useless new tech I don't want, I'll get it. I keep thinking about how awesome PS3 graphics with the Wii controllers and casual game titles would be. Sounds pretty awesome to me, anyway.

Didn't Nintendo make the same mistake with DS? It's seems like they're THE ONLY people that can utilize 3d capabilities of DS. The shitty games is the reason why I don't play on my DS anymore and the only "proper" 3d games that I can think off are Ndogs,Mario Karts,SM64DS and Phantom Hourglass.

Nintendo's marketing strategy.

Release a new console
-Make a new Mario
-Make a new Zelda
-Make a new Metroid
-Make a new Pokemon
-Make spin off sports titles

5 years later, release a new console
-Make a new Mario
-Make a new Zelda
-Make a new Metroid
-Make a new Pokemon
-Make spin off sports titles

5 years later, release a new console...

And now the Wii has come along and things are different.
Wait. You were not describing the Wii there?

I own both a PS3 and 360, and had a Wii for 3 months before I got bored and sold it off.

Somehow that doesn't work..

Thing is, Nintendo admittedly made the decision to stop being in such direct competition with Microsoft and Sony as it used to be. And sadly, it works. Where the GC was arguably the most powerful 6th generation console around and suffered only from its lack of strong third-party support, the Wii is the same decent 6th generation console in a world made for 7th generation consoles, with a few flashy new perks tacked on. The targeted demographic falls in 3 large groups, which is one of the reasons it's selling so much.

1- The Nintendo fans who have been expecting the next Nintendo system for a while, would have bought it no matter how it was, expect next-gen entries into their favorite franchises, and actually think they own the Revolution.

2- The gamers who don't know too much and saw an opportunity to own a next-gen system for half the price, and think next gen merely means a system that will see new games for another 5 years or so.

3- The so-called "non traditionnal gamers", the moms and uncles who find appeal in the casual games.

Likewise, the games fall into 3 categories:

1- The first party lineup (Zelda, Mario party, Metroid, Mario galaxy, Super paper mario). Mostly these were planned for the GC and would actually worked better on it, since they don't have anything that couldn't have been done on the GC, except with Wii controls added in some form or another. The exception to this rule would be Galaxy, of course.

2- The multi-platformers (anything published by EA, Ubisoft or Activision, and anything based on a movie). The Wii version is usually the weakest one, since the developper doesn't have much experience with the system and doesn't want to waste much time learning it (time is money, folks).

3- The casual games (Rayman, Carnival games, Mario party again, Playground, Warioware) and the games that come out at 30$ or less (anything by Human Conspiracy, these days). The strategy here is to flood the market with as many games as possible and hope that you'll make more money than what you've spent in developping costs.

As we can see, Nintendo has more 3rd party support than it used to, but still lacks *good* 3rd party support. And with the first-party lineup being 5 years too late in technology, the situation is actually worse than with the GC for anyone who doesn't fall into fan groups 2 (low-budget gamers) or 3 (mom and uncle casual gamers). So apart from the 1st party games, what else was good on the GC? The unexpected hits in the form of 3rd party exclusives (RE4, Killer 7, Tales of Symphonia, Eternal darkness), and to me that becomes the sole interest of the Wii so far, which is why I actually bought another next-gen system right at the beginning of the generation this time.

Now, Sony used to have good 3rd party exclusives, but it's lost exclusivity to most of these franchises (Devil may cry, Silent hill, Ace combat) since Microsoft is willing to pay for exlusivity (Bioshock) while Sony's not, on the other hand, Microsoft delivered too early with a system that wasn't technologically reliable at first, lacked some important features (HDMI ports and wireless networking come to mind) and put much emphasis on the paying live services. I think it's going to be a pretty bad console generation all around, sadly. Just my two cents.

Interesting thread. I was thinking this - there are loads of rubbish games that appear to have come from crap GBA and DS game ideas. Unfortunately the console is owned by a lot of kids, and they seem to want these terrible "cute animal", movie port and cartoon-style games.

The two games I play most on my Wii have already been out on other consoles for years - namely Guitar Hero and Lego Star Wars. I bought Resident Evil 4 again (having already completed it on GC), and the only innovative game I play is Wii Sports.

I haven't bought into the hype, I have played the Wii several times on quite a few games but I just kept thinking "Give me a proper gamepad with some decent graphics and gameplay" and went home to play on my 360.

The Wii doesn't seem to have much going for it if you're a lover of console or PC gaming in the traditional sense. It's success seems down to it's ability to attract a lot of people outside of the 'gamer' stereotype. A friend of mine has never owned a console before and yet has a Wii in a large room on a big TV, great for parties but not much else.

The fact they are letting these third-party developers off the leash kind of suggests Nintendo are at a loss with what else to do.

Id like them to release a NEW console that carries on where the GameCube and N64 left off.

Why is it that when Nintendo doesn't support third-party, they are called "snobs", and when they do, they are called "desperate"?
If you're refering to me I think they're snobs but I don't think they're desperate. They've got the right idea with the way they're selling the machine. Mediocracy sells! As a gamer I dislike it, but it's the ideal way to keep their company alive. It's the only choice they have in fact.

I don't. Lets face it, the wiimote is the only thing that's keeping their titles remotely fresh. Look at the Mario Party franchise. They've all been getting worse since MP4. Having MP8 using the Wiimote is the only way it could hope to be remotely original (albeit not as good as MP4).

You don't need true 3D to make a good game on the DS. Contra 4 and Kirby: Canvas Curse are cases in point. (Although Contra 4 has real 3D for the base stages.)

For some reason, despite how cheap and easy it's supposed to be to make games for the DS, very few western companies are willing to make games for it unless they're cheesy, mediocre franchise games.

Wait. You were not describing the Wii there?
OK, on the context, things are slightly different.

5 years later, the Wii is released
-Make a new Mario
-Make a new Zelda
-Make a new Metroid
-Make a new Pokemon
-Make spin off sports titles
-Lots of mediocre 3rd party games are available to give the false notion of choice to gamers :D

He's pointing out the fact that there is no Pokemon game for the Wii yet.

True but lack of 3D use and an awful lot of shitty titles doesn't look too good compared to PSP. Even if PSP games suck too, that bloody thing has so much power that any retard can design a 3D game for it, unlike DS in which case Nintendo are the only ones who give a shit and try to squeeze out some decent 3D out of the handheld.

Maybe you have multiple social circles?

Anyways, he's right about the PS3 - it should be labeled "early adopter/fanboy desperately waiting for games to justify its purchase."

I keed, I keed! It was just too easy :).

Lol all systems that become popular and even some that dont have tons and tons and tons of shitty games. People attempting to make the next big gamming hit which brings a few beautiful games into creation amongst the tremendos piles of shitty games in bargin bins though a lot of them go unoticed. Systems havent changed in poping out gamming quality they just now advertise the shit along with the good titles and still ignore the no name brand quality games.
