Metal Gear Solid 1-3 all have much better stories than BioShock - as someone pointed out, it wasn't necessarily BioShock's story that was great, but the atmosphere and the setting, combined with the audio-log method of storytelling.

Silent Hill 2 tops all those games in every area possible - the story is amazing, the pacing is perfect, and the atmosphere is unmatched.

*Edit: My god, I posted this at 0:00 AM....... did I just reset time?

I can't really think of any other game that sets the scene so well and makes you interested in what happened to the place before you crashed over there.

System Shock featured my favorite antagonist in any media ever produced and ultimately told a more interesting story in my mind. Bioshock presented a better world, but this seems to be the result of setting and technology more than anything.

I love Bioshock as much as the next dude, but...:

Skies of Arcadia
Ico
No More Heroes
Deus Ex
The Suffering
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2NO NO!
Blood
Grimm Fandango
Brothers in Arms
Psychonaunts
PREY
Beyond Good and Evil
KOTOR 1 and 2
Condemned: Criminal Origins
God of War

...have equally/even more interesting stories and characters than Bioshock.
this is hilarious

blood is that kind of game where you grab a gun and strat slaughtering everything in your path, and its plot is more interesting than bioshocks

survival crisis z (BEST GAME EVAR!!!111ONE) took a slice from silent hills pie but..

the main thing keeping me going through episode one was i figure it would explain the ghost later on (they made no sense to me, just going "boo" like that). oh boy did they.

basically, science triggers zombies, evil cult member who got infused with HELL ITSELF gets woken up by the zombies, mindfuck, no... MASSIVE MINDFUCK. ensues

Harry Potter.

BOOM!

Seriously? I am sure, just none that I can think of. Hell, SP: Conviction. Perhaps not the most original story, but god damn did that bastard child deliver on character development and epicness.

I don't even have to have played a game with a better story to know that there's one with a better story than Bioshock. It's story wasn't even that good, it just had a few nice twists and a 4th wall breaker.

Actually....

If you pay close attention to the game Bioshock Ones storyline doesn't really make sense.

Just, ignore the Andrew Ryan thing and you'll find that everything Atlas does doesn't really make a lot of sense.

You will also find many of Andrew Ryans actions don't really make sense. The twist actually BREAKS the majority of the story line. Because to believe the twist you have to believe that both Andrew Ryan and Atlas were either in on it together, or that they both didn't know about the twist. Each scenario doesn't make sense. If the twist is to be believed everything Atlas does is a massive wasted effort. Especially what he does after the twist. The sub scene for BOTH characters doesn't make sense. As well why tenebaum leaves you ignorant when she wants your help doesn't make sense.

Bioshock 2 i liked more simply because it had a logical flow. Characters magically disappeared (Tenebaum.. christ)but the stroyline was consistent. Inconsistency kinda bug me.

Both Storylines weren't that amazing to me. Though i really enjoy BOTH games. A lot. Its just i find so many people are blind sided by this twist that they don't pay attention to how its actually really really dumb.

Please don't flame me to death.... Is just my opinion...
Goddamit. Stupid Flame shield. I'd cook you, I would! ><
On a serious note, I suppose Atlas could've just skipped the sub scene. I think though the whole gaining your trust thing was vital for him because perhaps he knew about the antidote Suchong developed, and letting you know from the off might have allowed you to cure yourself quicker, preventing Ryan's death etc.

I heard all the audio diaries also, which tied in all of the storyline. I don't really understand how the twist was a major plothole or that, but maybe I'm oblivious to it really.

OT: Basically BioShock's storyline wins for me. But honourable mention to the Half Life episodes :)

I've heard wonders about Knights of the Old Republic, but have yet to play it myself. You know that's on my list. :D

I would say Final Fantasy VII and VI. Both are very long stories, with beloved characters, countless twists, extensive mythos, great soundtracks... I love them both.

I will go with HL2 and the episodes. That is the only game where have ever felt anything for the characters and the situations they are in. It was also the only game to make me cry at the end of episode 2.

I also like Warcraft 3 story. They were fun, variaed and believeable. As believeable as a game like that can make it anyway.

Definitely agree with Sands of Time from a storytelling perspective. The actual story wasn't anything spectacular but the storytelling and the growing relationship between the Prince and Farah really grabbed me and even the sometimes-cheap device at the end of the story didn't feel wasted in the context of the game.

Another one I was surprised at was Assassin's Creed 2. I really loved the way it sucked you into the world and introduced historical characters such as the Medici family and Borgia, even working in historical events. Hmm... must re-play.

Bioware concentrate on the story though and it shows. My favourites have got to be BG2, KoTOR, Dragon Age and the Mass Effect series.

That there (in the original post) is an ignorant and presumptious statement.

I've not played Bioshock (I know, I am already ashamed of myself) but I thought the story to an old PSX game, Koudelka, was one of the best written I've seen (Half Life 2 and the original Silent Hill were brilliant as well). Sure Koudelka as a game was AWFUL, but there was a very good plot to the game :)

Pardon me for not reading all the preceding posts (I'm drunk. Sue me); just call me out on it if someone has said this before.

Obviously, System Shock 2 was better, though not by a lot
Deus Ex, same boat.
Fallout 2 instantly comes to mind, though that wasn't a shooter.
Fallout 3 was worse in terms of central story, but better overall

And, to my knowledge, there weren't any other FPS/RPGs better than Bioshock (not that Fallout 1 or 2 were FPS in anyway). As for pure RPGs, none spring to mind; someone above mentioned Warcraft 3, but I assume they were talking out of their ass since that game was pathetic compared to it's predecessors (which MIGHT, if pressed, give Bioshock a little competition).

The first bioshock was one of the very few game storys that i did truely feel a part of... Despite not making all that much sense in hindsight.

My avatar says it all. That and Mass Effect, even though I never actually played it.
