Is there a game that you were just determined to finish?

What I mean by that, is there a game that you would have given up on, but refused to admit defeat to because it was stupid or whatever your reason was?

For me, it'd be Killzone 3. I don't know why I bought it when there were plenty of tasty gamecube or ps2 games at my local Play&Trade (If you don't know who they are look them up, great game selection at a lot of their stores even all the way back to the cartridge era) but for whatever reason I got it. I came home and started playing it finding it to be decent, then pretty good, then I don't know what happened. All the sudden I just got sick of the game and hated it. Most likely after the stealthy section as I felt it was almost a cheap knock off of Call of Duty 4's "All Ghillied up" mission. The cover didn't work half the time as you just sort of poked your head out of it all the time, still taking damage, and the enemies just never seemed to want to die. I don't know if there was some feature I was missing to have my guy duck his head down a tad bit more, or if my aim was really bad (I like to think of myself as a pretty good fps player, and a really good one in the single player mode of fps games) or I was just missing some crucial thing about the guns or enemy weak points or if it was the difficulty setting. The game just annoyed the heck out of me on so many fronts. But for what ever reason I forced myself to finish it. I don't know why I did, the final mission was basically a rail shooter, and the low gravity section, which could have been a fantastic way to make me forgive the bad cover in the game didn't work well because you couldn't shoot while floating around.

There were opportunities galore to make me forgive some of the mistakes the game made but they just were never taken. So has anything similar to this ever happened to you? And if so, share the game and story and what you didn't like about it. I'd be interested in getting someone else's perspective on Killzone because I am willing to give games a second chance.

Dark Souls. I considered giving up after I spent five hours trying to complete the Undead Burg, then again once I reached the damn Tomb of the Giants. I actually abandoned the game for months in the Demon Ruins because of the bosses there, but I eventually came back and completed it because I didn't want to let it beat me.

I could almost have written the same thing word-for-word lol. I think I got a little fatigued at the TotG and Demon Ruins. By then the act of dying to bosses then having to grind past loads of enemies to even get back just made me quit as I couldn't justify the amount of time and frustration/rage to satisfaction/fun ratio.

I left it for maybe six months, then when I was continually disappointed by the likes of Hitman and AC3 I got back into it. Pushed myself to complete it. Then I did another run-through really learning attack patterns, dodging and parrying, rather than blocking and artificially making it more challenging by not levelling up and not using estus flasks in boss fights. Okay, with the exception of Bed of Chaos *shudder*. And I loved and hated every single minute of it.

Batman Arkham Asylum. If it weren't for everyone telling me how great it was, I would have put it down after the first hour. I was so damn bored with the mechanics, but by the time I realized that it wasn't going to get better I figured I played so much of it so I might as well beat it. To the game's credit I can see why people like it, but the gameplay just did not do it for me at all, and the fact that it was so slow paced made it feel extremely grueling since I wasn't enjoying myself.

The new Tomb Raider.

It wasn't bad enough to just abandon, but I just don't play many games on console anymore, mostly just on handhelds (because I can play them on the bus or train, or on the sofa in the cmpany of others) and it wasn't interesting enough to keep me fully interested.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance, especially after Soul Reaver 2.

I just needed to experience the story first hand (I could have watched a video on YouTube) to see how it ended. Shitty controls almost stopped me though; it's almost impossible to do one jump sequence on the keyboard (because the camera changed direction mid-air and thus the direction of your jumps did as well) so I bought a 360 controller to be hooked up to my pc. Overall, gameplay wise it was kind of a drag. Same with Blood Omen 2 (which I also finished).

The Ninja Gaiden reboot on Xbox I put it down just before the Alma boss fight as it was pissing me off then a few weeks later som people were bragging about how they beat it so I went back in and finished it.

I was surprised how much easier it gets after you beat the army (who are a pain in the ass) and no boss is as hard as Almas first form or at least I never had anywhere near as much trouble.

The first Witcher game.

The first few hours of the game were extremely tedious, but as the game went on, it got much better, and was happy that I ended up seeing it through. Now i'm a massive fan of the franchise.

The ending of Halo 3 was impossible to me in 2007, so I gave up, and came back a year later and beat it no problem.

Dark Souls: My moment of darkness was when I had only three things left to do: Beating the Four Kings, going into the Tomb of Giants and traversing Lost Izalith.

I had to take a break for three fucking days just to get back to my senses and return to playing Dark Souls. After taking 23 beatings from the Four Kings (yes, I counted), getting pushed off the ledges by those stupid skeleton beasts in the Tomb of Giants and almost clawing my eyes out because of the insane light contrast (lava and darkness) in Lost Izalith I finally made it through.

Totally worth it.

Assassin's Creed Revelations. To me this one was by far the weakest in the series. A very unnecessary game. But I really like the Assassin's Creed story so I felt I had to finish the game. So I did.

Another one is Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I loved Sands of Time and really liked Two Thrones, but Warrior Within wasn't really my thing. Too dark for this series. But again I felt I had to finish it.

And as others have mentioned Dark Souls. My problem with it wasn't really the difficulty (I beat Demon's Souls on NG++++, so Dark Souls doesn't scare me), but more because I didn't like it as much as Demon's Souls. But still I really wanted to complete it to prove to myself I could and to see where else the game would take me. In the end I was quite satisfied with it.

Dragon Age: Origins, on nightmare difficulty. I pounded my face against that for a couple hundred hours before I finally built a character right and got him all the way to the end.

Assassins Creed was fun, Assassins Creed 2 was even more fun, Assassins Creed Brotherhood was the best.

Assassins Creed Revelations was just painful, I just could not do another AC games worth of collecting shit. But probably a year after I started it I finally forced myself to complete it.

I am in the same boat with Assassins Creed 3 right now, I've played to about chapter 3 but I just cannot force myself to go any further right now.

Advent Rising. Because I HAD to finish that stupid thing because I had to know how it ended. Even if the story was crap and it ended on a cliffhanger, I still felt satisfied for not letting the crappy gameplay beat me.

captcha: top notch

Noooooo it was not a top notch game.

Probably Megaman x4. It was one of the first games I ever played, and that game kicked my ass up and down the stairs. I must have been stubborn at that age, because it was pretty brutal for a pre-schooler. It actually took me several years of on-and-off again playing to beat most of it. I didn't technically beat the final boss until my Freshman year of college, when I found the old game disc in my dusty old drawer and figured I'd finish the thing once and for all.

I guess I would say I Wanna Be The Guy on this one.

I didn't dislike the game, it was trying to kill you every step of the way. Cheap deaths, invisible platforms, trial and error, objects that don't look like they can move suddenly move and kill you. All that was part of the game, cheap, but it made the game what it was. What made me disgruntled was the fact that it crashed a lot. Just managed to beat that boss? Great, now just activate the s... oh, it crashed and I have to fight the boss again... that's hilarious...

Still, the game was so determined to piss me off (One of my friends managed to punch through the screen a different friend smashed his hard drive) so I had to beat it just to show it who's the boss. Well, I did, then I beat it again trying to get under 100 deaths and somehow managed that too. I also got the extra collectibles once. It was a nightmare, but I did it.

SUPER HEXAGON. God damn it, I spent way to many hours on that game. Argh. Still angry at myself. And satisfied. And slightly ashamed.

I mean, the game is really fair (actually it was even lenient with its collision detection), but it was just so hard. But I made it, simply to say that I did - and because, frankly, in 10 years I might not have the reflexes left to do it.

Skyrim, the achievement whore in me made me vow to complete that game 100%

Dark Souls, anytime someone says a game is difficult I want to beat it just to say I did.

Final Fantasy Tactics, the ONLY Final Fantasy game I've never played much less beat I cant stand it but I want to be able to say I've played every game in the series and this is one of the more popular titles.

N'thing Dark Souls. That game was my Everest, and I was determined to beat it before DS2 came out. Now I'm obsessed with it, and can't wait for next March.

Any game I played, ever. Is just the kind of gamer I am. 100% completion OCD and stuff. That's why my backlog is so scary, because there aren't enough hours in a day to get through them all. >.>
