Aside from the Reaper threat, I'd love to live in the Mass Effect universe. Aside from the sheer coolness, quality of life in general (for core human worlds) has been improved dramatically.
If those two examples don't work I believe you are looking for Harvest Moon to come out with a game in the future. The racism in Mass Effect is no different from the racism in many countries. As in, it isn't illegal to be racist. People have free speech in the Mass Effect universe. This could even be argued as a good thing about the universe.Thrust said:
Based on the games you listed (which I assume is the type of game you like to play) where would the threat/conflict be? Fetch quests where you go get baking ingredients for the local bakery? Your best bet is for an economy/simulator game with a futuristic setting. Even then I wouldn't doubt there is a black market and crime as opposition in the mechanics.

Granted, the Reaper threat isn't a happy thing, and poverty still exists on Earth and pretty much everywhere else... but your average Alliance citizen tends to have better access to medical care, technology and resources than your average citizen of a third-world nation today... and, if you look through the various in-game knowledge-bases (I know, I know, I read waaay too much into this... it's my Star Trek) you'll see that even though there are still poor nations on Earth, basic technology has become so common that every human there has access to the comforts of the present day first-world.
Racism was just an example, there are a lot of shit happening in the Mass Effect Universe but I agree that it's not as dystopian as other gaming universe, that is what I thought until I saw the trailer for Mass Effect 3 where Earth is being invaded and filled with Mass Murder.loc978 said:

conflict is central to a game: if there wasn't some sort of threat, the game wouldn't be particularly interesting. Even in past-tense games like assassins creed or elder scrolls something is threatening the world.
