In Mass Effect 3 trailer London gets ruined so that automatically makes the Mass Effect future rubbish.

The dark and horrible future is a trope that people use to covertly, or not so covertly, point at some specific thing that scares them and go "OH JESUS LOOK WHAT (aliens/nukes/war/AI/genetic experiments/bioweapons/over industralization/terrorism/religious fervor/angry bunnies) WILL DO TO THE WORLD!" Fallout was nukes, bioshock was arguably both Randian ideology and genetics, system shock was technology, dead space and mass effect is aliens, etc. Also, an easy way to make social commentary without pissing off a specific group is to leap into the future and show the group as something entirely different except not really.

A future of chrome spaceships, robot slaves, and Aryan supermen with names like Blast Hardcheese was already tried back in the 50's and people got tired of it. We like seeing things break.

Well I can think of one utopian book, and even then it was written as a companion to a dystopian fiction.

It's cause it's fucking boring.

Well the first Mass Effect had a nice, optimistic tone to it. Despite the Reaper stuff.

Other then that, can't think of much else.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect? At least after you beat the game...
I don't think so because there will be a sequel.
Will be? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TimeSplitters_2]
Future perfect was the third in the series...

True, however I do believe there is a confirmed sequel to come yet...
I believe crytek has the rights to it right now and said they will make one if there is a demand for it.
Should they open their eyes they will see much, much demand.

if there's a game that acurately depicts our current situation, IRL, then maybe that, u know, aside from all the politicians and stupid people who talk about something they know nothing about... so if there's a game like that, then that might be my answer.
Also Matrix? it's in the future, and the people who are jacked in are pretty happy in the glorydays of 1990 :)

After finishing Dead Space 2 (great game btw) I was wonder of how video game portrays the future, and sadly every single sci fi Video game I've played always tell us that the future will be a dark gloomy unpleasant time.

I mean seriously look at games like System Shock,Doom , Desus Ex, Halo, Crysis , Haze, Fallout and now Dead Space.

In all of those games the future is not pleasant, I know you will need a problem to solve in order to make a game but why not make beautiful future and make that problem threatens certain people at that time and not the whole world.

BUT, maybe there is a game where the future doesn't that I missed, help me Escapists is there any ?
Microsoft Space Simulator. I win wooo!

If you are lucky enough to be born on a human planet in Tau space you can do pretty much what you want, even prey to the emperor.
The Tau ending in Dark Crusade goes against that completely; Difficult lives, re-education, and sterlization. Oh, and eaten alive for being with imperials.
It's not really a good future for anyone unless you're with the Orkz.

In System shock the future is actually pretty good. It's just a set of very specific circumstances (which in the first game, are all your fault) the leave you stuck in living Hell. Provided you don't start messing with moral free insane Artificial Intelligences or try to hack into secure military databases, System shock's universe seems more or less fine.

Also, Mass Effect seems pretty nice as well. Certainly no worse than our current planet, it is skewed a little by your constantly being on the violent edges of Mass Effect's society, but the majority of planets are apparently peaceful and largely unspectacular, which is why you never see them.

Take away the Reapers in Mass Effect and it's pretty good.

No cancer or a lot of other major diseases.
You can live around 50 years longer on average.
You can safely modify your appearance to what you like.
Pretty much everyone has a laptop attached to their wrist which weighs nothing.
You can meet lot's of other interesting beings.
Racism and sexism among humans is practically non-existent.

Mirror's Edge is essentially a utopia with a clean, technologically advanced city with no crime except for those terrorist runners.

Futurama game.
You didn't say the game had to be original. Or good.

I think it just depends on your perspective. Deus ex's society is pretty much the same as ours, except the corruption is far more obvious.

I don't think there are any games where the future is absolutely perfect cause that would be a pretty boring game, but there are a few games like Mass Effect where the future is okay. Yeah there is racism but most human diseases have been wiped out and the Asara are friggin gorgeous so that is good. Is it perfect? No. Would I want to live there? Sure, especially considering the fact that the property value in London is pretty much plummeting at the moment.

 Who could say that the Fallout future sucks? It's awesome! Cool mutations, awesome 40-50's soundtrack! Whats not to like?
as well as a reduced population (think of the student to teacher ratio in your local school district), shorter lines at the grocery store, no gun laws, meted justice...really whats not to love?

Well, "Mirror's Edge" depicted a very bright and happy future for most...
Mirror's Edge is not a futuristic game, it's "supposed" to be set in present day.
Says who?

It doesn't give indications one way or another, and judging by the references to the November riots, the architecture, the overall EVERYTHING, I'd bet money it takes place in 21XX.
Yeah I believe Mirror's Edge is supposed to take place in a near future police state version of the world. On that note though, the world still sucks. There is martial law, and people are forced to run across rooftops to deliver messages that say anything negative or seditious about the government.
