Alpha Centauri was a Civilization style game set on a future planet. Your future was as warlike or peaceful as you wanted it to be.

Ratchet and Clank has a sweet future, and discounting the impending doom the mass effect universe it pretty sweet.

After finishing Dead Space 2 (great game btw) I was wonder of how video game portrays the future, and sadly every single sci fi Video game I've played always tell us that the future will be a dark gloomy unpleasant time.

I mean seriously look at games like System Shock,Doom , Desus Ex, Halo, Crysis , Haze, Fallout and now Dead Space.

In all of those games the future is not pleasant, I know you will need a problem to solve in order to make a game but why not make beautiful future and make that problem threatens certain people at that time and not the whole world.

BUT, maybe there is a game where the future doesn't that I missed, help me Escapists is there any ?
You want a bright depiction of the future? Sorry about that, OP. I was under the influence that you wanted a fun game.

Most games are driven by conflict, one way or another. You know what isn't conducive to conflict? A happy, Utopian future. Dead Space wouldn't have existed if the oppressive government hadn't been trying to tamper with artifacts they didn't fully understand. Crysis 2 would be about a guy wasting the potential of a multi-million dollar suit of powered armor if it didn't have an alien invasion.

The funny thing about Halo, though, is that the future is pretty good. The only rather large problem is the alien invasion bent on humanity's destruction. And the point of having said invasion is so there can be an actual game.
Yeah. the Halo Universe is pretty good...

for everyone except all those people living in the two thirds of Africa and the entirety of Reach who died in a glassing. Also Captain Keyes and Noble Six.
Wow! You sure beat me with that logical argument. I hadn't even thought that-

Oh wait. Nevermind. Both of those examples were direct results of invasion by hostile aliens. You know, that thing I mentioned that if removed from the Halo universe would leave it a pretty nice place to live?

You son of a...

Well, Mirror's Edge depicted a very clean and good looking city. Faith and her nifty band of thieves were all kinda assholes.
I'm not sure if you're playing that straight or inverse...

But that situation doesn't "suck" for the everyman. It's not ideal, but it's not awful.
And, in fact, Faith and company made life worse for everyone.

Why was the Totalitarian City Police Department trying to train its own Runners? So it can chase down the actual Runners. What are their present alternatives to stopping Runners? Shooting at them. What does Faith do? Eliminate any safe alternative for the police department for stopping Runners other than opening fire on them.

Just because it doesn't suck doesn't mean that it's right.

Well, an oppressive elite organization gassing colonies and silencing anyone against them or the remnants of an aristocratic government attempting to drop an asteroid on Earth to cause an ice age or two other aristocratic factions trying to exterminate civilian life on the colonies/Earth surely can't be that bad.

OT: I think the X series might be decent, could've been better without the pirates and some alien-like species trying to kill you.

Actually, yes. Yes it does. Because it doesn't suck does mean that it's right unless you can present specific evidence to the contrary. Can you?

It's just a game.

But no, I can't. I don't have enough evidence or even information to draw any major conclusions to the underworkings of the game world, because I only get one perspective for four hours.

Also, I think your logic is junk.

Waaaah, waaaaah! I can't defend my position, so I'm just going to discredit the topic!

Also known as the "I never liked this stupid game anyway" argument.

So in other words, you have no evidence to support your claim? Thought so. Citing reasons why you lack the specific evidence you need to argue a point isn't a substitute for said evidence. Quite the contrary, actually.

Considering that I'm using well-founded theory of logic [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophic_burden_of_proof] I think you're going to need a bit more of an argument than the equivalent of, "And...and also your FACE is stupid!"

Most sci-fi (as in, space opera type sci fi) games tend to have a great future for MOST people. Its just you, the player, who are always screwed.

Star Wars, Mass Effect, even Dead Space; the impression is given that most people are happy. Its just you whose fuckd to hell and back.

Any of the Star Trek games? I'm not big on the details but I do know the 'Trek Earth' rebuilt itself after World War III liberated from a lot of the current-day problems, eventually becoming a galactic superpower. Everything's pretty peachy on Earth if not the further-off colonies.

Hard Rain. It takes place in the future and the future is a kicking place to be. It just sucks to be the main character because of one serial killer, which isn't really a big flaw when futures come into play.

Also the Futurama future from Futurama games.

ArmorCore, the future isn't dystopian their is just a war going on which is a plague of even the modern time.

I mean games NEED a conflict wether its set in the past, future, or present. I mean with out conflict why would you want to play the game?

The dystopian societies, wars, serial killers, apocalypses, etc. etc. are meant to entertain us. Meant to make us play the game and try to enjoy the experience.

Oh, also the HAWX games. They are set in the future, and deal with just a regular war (but in the SKY!)

The future in the Journeyman Project is pretty bright...

Floating sky-cities, an end to all wars, human contact with aliens, time-travel, insta-teleportation...
