Is there such a thing as "America's national dish"?

There is no national dish because America is so huge and so many different nationalities moved into different parts of the country, each one has their own niche.

I live in Minnesota and we have tater tot hot dish, or in other parts of the country, tater tot casserole. We also have quite a bit of lake fish meals like walleye bites amongst other things thanks to our Scandinavian, Norwegian, and Polish roots. Places like Chinatown in San Fran or along the Bible Belt down south would probably turn their nose up at it.

America is just too diverse and each area is too different.

Well according to Wikipedia there are a few national foods that America has and they are hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, donuts, and macaroni and cheese. As from where I am from our dishes are kasha and borscht.

It's fried chicken and mayonnaise on top of a pizza, right? With a side of apple pie.

Hmmm, I'm from Western New York, so, real American food to me are chiken wings, Roast Beef on a Kimmelweck roll, (Beef on 'Weck) or a Chicken Finger Sub with extra Bleu Cheese... All of those things are only available in their purest form in Western New York.

But, as for a true national dish, I'd go with a true, charcoal grilled cheese burger. That, to me, is the essential American food.

Pizza or some kinda chicken.
Pizza is Italian so that would be impossible for it to be the American national dish.

OT: Probably Corn/Chilli dogs???
Pizza was invented by an Italian immigrant in America. So it could qualify.
Location doesn't have anything to do with it. Pizza is Italian...

I really wouldn't know what to say is our (America's) National dish. But thing about it. America is a country much larger than most European countries. It's only natural that things would be decentralized.

Macaroni and Cheese gets my vote. Not a child in the states who wasn't brought up on the stuff.

I'm actually not sure. From my house in the suburbs I can walk to an Italian restaurant, six Mexican Taquerias, an Armenian restaurant, two Thai restaurants, several Chinese restaurants, a Vietnamese restaurant, and an Indian restaurant. They all serve authentic food, and in most of them they have to translate the menu for me. There's so much diversity that it's impossible. Heck, I don't even think my city could decide on a dish.

Your neighborhood beats mine. Within walking distance of my outer urban enclave I have...let's see. About 10 fast food joints and a mall food court with a bunch of fast food of its own. Comes with living right by a freeway exit.

My city is very diverse. We have the largest population of Hmongs, Philipinos, and Armenians outside of their native country. It's only 34% white, actually. It's quite extraordinary.

McDonalds and Apple Pie.

England's national dish is the Roast Dinner, or of course the Full English Breakfast.
