Is This An Unusual Reaction To Pain?

This occasionally bubbles up in my mind.

When I'm hurt, I don't scream, or cry, or do much of anything. Well, I do one thing. I tend to hyperventilate. I have this theory that if I ever get hurt enough, I'll breathe so heavy I'll black out. But I don't do a lot of the things associated with severe pain. Leaves me wondering how unusual this is.

So...how do you, fellow Escapists, handle pain?

EDIT: The Escapist made me go through THREE Captchas to post this. Doesn't seem as worth it in retrospect.

Well, first I swear, and then I go back to what I was doing. Usually it's mind over matter for me.

Depending on how much it hurts I end up holding my breath to dull the pain through oxygen deprivation. I also grimace a lot.

I've got a friend who mostly reacts to pain by laughing.

For me, it depends on the level of pain. I'm most likely to do the Peter Griffin.

Anything worse than a small cut, bruise, stub, etc. I'm liable to have my eyes start watering and whatnot. Then on the clear opposite side of the spectrum, when I broke my arm and when I dislocated my knee I pretty much went into shock right away, so what happened after became a big blur. I think I probably let out a pained grunt or something when they pulled my knee back into the socket though. Even on morphine (at least, I think that's what they used. I wasn't in a clear enough mind to really pay that close attention) and half-conscious that still hurt like hell.

Well, I usually react to pain by laughing, so... It doesn't seem that unusual to me. I tend to get a few wierd looks when I manage to hurt myself because of that reaction :p

I laugh. Scary Joker-ish laugh. Starts of as slight giggle, morphs into creepy/scary as pain level increases. Except when I hit my big toe, thats just my curse button.

I broke my nose and didnt even realise but i was very drunk when it happened. Honestly if you want a good anesthetic drink a lot of alcohol. I only realised when the police and ambulance turned up and the paramedic gave me a mirror. I seen my nose was on the other side of my face and there was blood everywhere

It was clearly testing your pain tolerance.

Note to self: subject seems OK after being subjected to 0.3 deciCAPTCHAs, however, there may have been side effects. Suggestion to investigate further. And another note: lab mice showed abnormal behaviour at these levels - suggestion: try live clowns, as they are known to be closer to humans

:p

Anyway, I just suck up my breath. Maybe curse. And grit my teeth a lot. Pretty boring, really.

It's usually shouting 'AHH!' or something like that followed by a lot of expletives and groaning through gritted teeth.

Like a couple of posters above me, I laugh when I get hurt. People usually give me a really weird look when it happens.

To me laughing is basically the same thing as crying, or screaming, it's just a physical release, and at least laughing when I get hurt tends to keep everyone around me calm about it, which seems pretty useful when you've been seriously injured.

As far as hyperventilating goes, I'm not sure how normal that is, but it doesn't necessarily seem abnormal, or like a bad thing, unless like the OP says it causes you to faint if you do it too much. That would probably be rather bad for you if you're seriously injured.

It depends. When I ripped my hand open I was running screaming around. On the other hand when I broke my other hand I simply didnt do anything. No screaming no winning no laughing simply nothing.

it is note worthy that between the first accident and the second there were 3 years so i think I simply dont do anything when it comes to pain.

Depends what mood I'm in. If I'm okay, I'll just swear a fuck ton and move on. If I'm in a bad mood, I'll probably come out with some kind of inhuman roar of rage before deciding this is some kind of conspiracy to piss me off.

It depends on the pain, if I get kicked in the nuts I let out a deep "oooof" but if I stand on a lego I will shout "MOTHER FUCKER!" or some such, if I get a tattoo in a painful spot I just grimace.

I don't think anybody has a 1 motion/noise that fits all pain.

I laugh . The first time i got my nipple peirced , i started to laugh , the guy that was doing my peircing said it was the first time he'd seen that happen .

I have to add that i'm a masochist so i like ( moderate) pain .

If i'm in a lot of pain , i will close my eyes real tight , it helps dull the pain .

I don't scream or crying , because those aren't manly reactions to physical pain.

I usually just go "Jeez, what a klutz" through gitted teeth (when it's my own fault I got hurt). Other times I'll just go "Hnnnng" or "Owrgh" or something. Now that's your day-to-day level of pain.

Severe pain tho? Hm, I remember once after a surgery it hurt like red-hot needles and I was basically just curled up, gnashing my teeth and going "I'm fine, leave me the fuck alone" at anyone who asked if I was okay.

Depends on the amount of pain. Moderate pain I ignore or swear and go on. If it's more severe, like the many, many times I've been had my hands and arms torn all to hell helping various stray cats then I curse a little harder, bandage it up, and then pretty much ignore it (not that I'm any bastion of toughness, I just have the somewhat worrying ability to ignore my body, pain, cold, hunger, thirst.)

But if it is a pain that cannot be ignored then I turn into a baby. I just fetal position and feel sorry for myself till it goes away or I take enough medication that it makes it go away.

If it's light/medium pain, I'll have a smile on my face.
I'll laugh, even.

But it changes when it goes to intense. The laughing stops. Silence.
The grin turns to a look of indifference. I don't scream, I stare. Intensely.
If only my eyes shot healing rays...

Depends on the pain, simple things don't bother me and I tend to just carry on living. Very painful things I tend to just not talk (which is weird for me) and sit there taking very deep breaths until there is some form of solution. I have a very high pain threshold unfortunately...cept with bee/wasp stings..... I can't handle bees and wasps for some reason =/ But recently I got a 3rd degree burn up my left wrist which didn't hurt that much at first. But now its healing and I'm starting to regain feeling in my wrist I'm realising how painful it actually is.... my solution: a good set of painkillers and many cups of tea goes a long way.

I lapse into Japanese and say 'i'tte!', or the old school Monkey Magic style 'itt-te-te-te-te-te-te-te!'.

For some reason, no matter how painful or lite the pain is, I always usually mutter one word. Either "Ahh," "Fuck," or "Shit." Those are my only three words. Even if it's harmless, my brain automatically thinks "PAIN" and I say that. If it's very painful, it only says it once and that's about it. The only time I have ever said more than one word was when my Appendix was about to burst and when my knee was suddenly swollen to the point of immobilization and any pressure was unbearable. No idea why.

I'm trying to control it to where lately I don't feel any pain after an injury, I still say the one word, but after that I seem to mentally block it out.
