I'm working on writing some stand-up to do at amateur night at the local comedy club. I've always felt I was a bit funny and thought I might be good at comedy. Anyway, I've written the first 2 opening jokes for my "routine", can you guys tell me if this stuff is funny or just me being an idiot.

Heya, how's everyone doing? Good, good. Anyway, let's get right to it, shall we? Before I came out tonight my wife took me aside and said "Don't you embarrass me! I don't want you up there saying the F-word a lot and talking about your weiner"...So, who wants to see my fucking dick?

So, I really don't even have anything to talk about right now. I mean, before I came here tonight I wrote a whole set of scathing political commentary making fun of Bush, but what's the point really? Making fun of Bush at this point is like kicking the shit out of a parapalegic...sure, it's funny, but what's the point?

That's all I have so far, is it at all funny?

Not for me.
Then again, with modern culture, I'm hard to impress due to my natural distaste for profainity.

Didn't find it too funny to be honest, but depends on the crowd.
Also I'm more in favor of the freestyle way of performing, if you go on wiyh material like that it will sound like you're reading from a script. Keep it loosey goosey.

Ah, but profanity is great. I'm not a fan of profanity just for the sake of being profane, but in some situations profanity has it's place and can make a big impact.

I'm afraid it's pretty cutting. It got a "heh" from it, but it's too short to work out whether I'd find it funny or not in a club.

Don't do it. Just don't. You could take a bit of advice from comics who do more situational comedy. What you have doesn't set itself up enough, and the punch lines are a little cliche.

Maybe you could get a puppet.

Oh yeah, and I'm a paraplegic. -100,000 kudos.

Awww he just built that kudos up from some great drifing.

On subject, not bad but seems a little forced to me, go with the flooooooooooooow. With that many o's, anymore you'll seem lazy.

Oh, oh, I do a bit of standup too! But sorry, I don't find it incredibly funny, it's not like Dane Cook bad, it's like yeah, it's kinda funny but not something I would pay to see.

It's a pretty obvious punchline. The joke is that your wife doesn't want you to embarrass her by saying the F word and talking about your johnson....so embarrass her by telling us that she likes to fart the national anthem while you have sex. See? No F word, no weiner!

Not bad as a starting point but I'd say it does need to be developed quite a bit.

This is gold. Someone somewhere once said that laughter was your body's way of coping with being tricked. So if you lead people down a particular trail of thought, then the punchline is something totally unrelated, you'll probably get laughs.
Mix it up after a while though, go for what they're expecting or they'll expect you to go off on a tangent.

Trust me to look at this scientifically.

Maybe it's my dry british sense of humour, but I didn't find it particularly funny.
In my opinion (which I try to leave out of discussions the internet for obvious reasons), British humor is funnier than American comedy. I love British humor.

*cue Benny Hill theme*

No, but seriously. Me too.
But it seems New Zealand dead pan humor is hilarious. Read: Flight of the Conchords

Expected and not funny. It sounds like some corny joke a really annoying person would say at a party.

"Well my wife doesn't want me to get heated up in a debate about politics, so who wants to talk about the election?! Har har!"

Everyone else - *forced smile and averted gaze*

So, I really don't even have anything to talk about right now. I mean, before I came here tonight I wrote a whole set of scathing political commentary making fun of Bush, but what's the point really? No.
