We were discussing attraction in psychology today and we did a worksheet, one of the questions being about what we find attractive in the opposite sex. When it got to which physical characteristics we find most attractive, I listed:

somewhat tall
healthy-looking, ie in good shape but not too skinny
dark hair
white skin

and some other things, but that last one was what got me in trouble. Now, at no point did I say I find other skin colors unattractive, and I did not say that I find colored people unattractive, just for their skin color. All I said was that it was one of many physical characteristics (saying nothing of personality and intellectual traits) that I find attractive. And also, it's not like I'd turn down a girl just because of her skin color, to me it's just one trait that I notice, and there are many more (saying nothing of intellectual and personality traits). To me, dating a black or asian girl would be no different than dating a blonde, yes I prefer dark to blonde hair but I can still find her attractive and nice (hopefully). I thought I was being honest about a personal opinion in a mature discussion about a mature topic.

In short, it's no different than my finding dark brown hair more attractive than light blonde hair. It's only a superficial thing.

Anyway, she didn't even give me a chance to explain what I meant by that, and wouldn't hear a word of it when I tried. Now I have to write a paper about racial tolerance. Is this right? Am I a racist, just for finding one skin color more physically appealing than the others?

EDIT/UPDATE: Okay, so the term 'colored people' comes off as racist. Just a poor choice of words on my part, sorry. I'd actually been told it was the politically correct term.

UPDATE 2.0: Wow, I had never expected this many replies! Thank you all Escapists for understanding. However, I think my teacher's response is a sign of a deeper problem, that is, our authorities so fear being accused of racism, that they themselves become racist, and attack anyone who even suggests that there is a difference (however superficial) between White, Black, Asian, Latino, etc. It's a liability avoidance and public image maintenance thing gone much too far. For the record, I did not write the paper (I loved all the suggestions about writing a paper about the biological basis of racism, and how our fear of being accused thereof causes us to become racists, etc. but I felt that doing so might come off as defensive or aggressive, which would simply enhance whatever point she was trying to make) and have told everyone in a position of authority at my school.

Simply put, the fact that some people so fear any hint of racism simply perpetuates it, just in a different form. Tragically, idiots like this are what is now keeping racism alive and well.

This is probably total bullshit. Tell your parents or a counselor. Go through the proper channels. Otherwise, you WILL get fucked over if you try and take things into your own hands. Just talk to an authority figure or try and talk things out with your teacher. Or your parents. Or a counselor. There is nothing wrong with having preferences. Your classes seem weird, is it "Health" class?

I call BS on your teacher, do a paper on the difference between racial tolerance and personal preference, your teacher should take the hint.

You cant choose who you're attracted to. Turn it the other way around, if you were mainly attracted to black people (or asians or anyone else non white for that matter) would people be calling you a racist?

That's BS. It's a question about what the individual is personally turned on by, racism doesn't even come into it, it's not something we can control. Pose a question like that to somebody and you can expect an honest, subjective opinion damn it. She has no right to punish you for that.

I would agree that it's bullshit. She asked you honestly, you told her honestly.

No, that is not racist. Even if you were to say 'I wouldn't date a black person' or any other ethnicity, it is not racist. It is a preference, not discrimination. Racism is when you project certain traits or discriminate against people because of their ancestry and race. As it happens, I like people with either dark or pale skin. I would speak to an authority figure like a guidance counselor at the school about the issue.

This, to me, sounds like a total bull accusation by your teacher/professor. I will admit to having tastes relatively akin to yours (3/4, I prefer red/auburn or gray hair to 'dark'), but it doesn't have any effect on my relationships with people that don't fit my preferences. I would recommend you take Lord of Cyberia up on his advice; go through available channels at your school and see if you can get get your punishment repealed. I wouldn't just keep it quiet and do what she ordered you to do.

In my opinion, no. You are not a racist.

Not to mention, if you look at that little list of yours, and match each physical characteristic to a "race" it could be argued that you hate all races. Makes. No. Sence.

While it's perfectly normal and acceptable to have a certain ethnicity be amongst the things you prefer in a sexual partner, it's usually something you leave off the list when discussing it publicly. Why? It's impossible to make said preferences clear without sounding like a racist asshole. I only like white girls! I'm not attracted to Latinos! See? There's just no way to go about it, so you're better off keeping that shit to yourself.

But yes, it's completely nonsensical that you're getting punished for it.

No, what you describe is not racist. Though in my attempt to pick a fight, I notice you use the description "colored people". That term strikes me as a bit racist. Just saying.

"You know what? A society where anyone can make jokes about anyone else and everyone laughs is a truly tolerant society. Political correctness charged censorship only services to engender distance between social groups."
-Ben Croshaw

Include that in your paper. In fact, make it a paper about why trying to force everyone to be PC is just as bad as racism.

First of all, it is in our genetic code to be racist at least for reproductive reason. Second of all, your teacher is blowing this out of proportion. Third, racism is by definition only with malicious intent. I.e. punching a guy because he is white, not hiring a guy because he is Asian, etc. Why am I (you or anyone else) a bad person if I don't want to have sex with someone outside my race? Especially if I can treat them just like everyone else.

p.s. Moral of the story: 100% honesty screws you over in the adult world.

Did anyone else specify skin colour?

OT: No it isn't racist unless you dislike people who aren't white and find them unattractive because they are of a different. Although obviously in this case well at least from the sounds of it I don't actually know you have put it down because it is just your preference.

Honestly, even if you ARE racist, merely BEING racist is not a crime. There is no law saying you can't hate black people, nor should there be. ACTING on the fact that you hate a particular group is an issue, but just thinking something can hardly be held against you.

1. You are not racist.

2. you should not be punished for answering the question as honestly and fairly as you are physically able to.

3. The teacher or whoever proposed this test should be punched in the face, cause seriously, if your going to make people fill out a form, you shouldn't blatantly start punishing people for giving their honest opinion unless the form was meant to be a trap in the first place, where in the person responsible still needs to be punched in the face for pushing that on regular people.

Okay, so poor choice of words, it just seemed a bit better than "not white".
