]AND it's feudal. THEDAS is essentially Europe with Darkspawn, magic and dragons and the nations have been amalgamated and renamed. The parallels between THEDAS nations and real world feudal kingdoms is unmistakeable.
just because it (like every other fantasy world ever) is inspired by our history doest mean it can;t pick and choose what to keep and what not to keep.... that's what fantasy is

My favourite part of Mount and Blade: Warband was playing as a woman and fighting my way to becoming Queen despite the disadvantage of being female in a male dominated society. It made the whole journey that much more epic.
yeah I get this and mabye it is something I would like to see more but the thing is it doesnt have to be a rule just because a writer wants to have a particular setting,

[quote/]Because of agency. Men will subjugate women socially at that level of "enlightenment". It is not pretty and it is not just but it is sadly the way of things.
I actually don't see how this fact is anymore important than say....the improbable bullet dodging skills of the main charachter from die hard or the COUNTLESS insane inaccurate and unrealistic crap that happens in our entertainment

Fallout is hardly a realistic (well what we can assume to be realistic..who knows..) depiction of post apocalyptic america...do I give a fuck? hell no! thats why I like it, its crazy and its got everything

[quote/]
All I am suggesting is that the social disadvantages imposed upon women be embraced fully by the series. It would be an improvement in story. I don't mean that as in I like to see women being subjugated, I like seeing them rise above it or observe the drama and strife that it causes.
again this is somthing I understand BUT it should have to apply to every setting..

[quote/]You can write a world where women own men by all means, but you do realise there will need to be some explanation as to HOW that happens, right? Otherwise it'll just look like a personal power fantasy.
and 99% of fiction featuring men ISN'T a personal power fantasy?

I wouldnt nessicaryly have to explain if it was clear it wasn't "our" earth but an alternate one, "what if" scenarios can be explanation enough

nope not at all
so what its links personality then?

[quote/]they cant be popular connect with people and sell millions
do they connect with people because they are enjoyable as charachters or do they connect with people by virtue of the games they are in and the fact that in their "blank" state they are appealing enough, at least in links case dont know about the other two

I didn't read the entire thread because 1. I'm an important man that does important things and 2. because I'm a lazy bastard.

Would it still be sexist if the exact same character were male instead? Is it a double standard that weak females is sexist but a weak man is not sexist?

Just my five cents.

There are plenty of male characters that show weakness. Also the two characters you listed I thought were shown as rather strong characters, not giving up and all that.

And what the "what if" thing is needs to be explained.

From a gender social equality perspective? No. But you were suggesting a setting where women dominate men. I'm saying if you're going to have such a setting it would be wise to include some explanation as to HOW that situation came about.

that would be like explaing how everything in the universe came about it just is (in that case)

From a gender social equality perspective? No
then why would you automatically assume a setting where women are the movers and shakers is some kind of statment against men?

Not everything needs to be explained but there needs to at least be some allusion as to why there is gender equality in a pre-industrial setting and there especially should be explanation if there is gender inequality favouring women.

As for the setting where women are the movers and shakers being a statement against men - that's absurd. I never said such a thing. If you do have that as the setting it just had best be explained how such a strange thing has managed to develop.

Drow society in Forgotten Realms for example is explained quite well due to how the Drow worship Lloth, who is the god of spiders and manipulation, and how Drow females are naturally stronger and larger than Drow males.
