No, funnily enough it's more of a case of "Here's my opinion, I'd be interested to know if you agree with it."
Then what's with that whole disingenuous "not sure if this is even music" bullshit? Asking for an opinion is one thing, but being condescending like that toward music you don't like is quite different.
Because listening to this song genuinely got me wondering what the definition of music is and whether or not there's some kind of baseline of rhythmic, melodic or harmonic structure a piece has to attain to be considered music as opposed to just noise. Is there some kind of law against airing these thoughts?
Shit man it's a (purposely) trashy dance song, not a symphony, right?. It's does all the things music like this is supposed to do, it's loud and aggressive, the beat is consistent, it's got the builds and drop, and the all those hooks. It might not be a very
good dance song, and might not like it which is fine, but to go all "is this really music though?" is ignorant and kinda arrogant. It's totally a case of "I don't like it therefore it sucks". Like, how much do you know about this type of music? How much do you know about the conventions and the themes and the production techniques (of which there are many, and they are really, really good). I feel like this whole thing is you not understanding how something works and assuming the worst about it.
But if you're really interested there is a "traditional" definition of music that we can use to look at this piece to figure out if it actually is music (spoiler: it is).
Western music usually (leaving out all the weird 20th century classical stuff) has about 7 elements: melody, harmony, rhythm, tone, form, tempo and dynamics. Some people say more or less, but I was taught 7.
Does this piece have these elements (yes).
Melody: The bassline, the vocals
Harmony: There are a handful of vocal harmonies and a quiet little pad and wowie there is more than one note being played at the same time. Harmony!
Rhythm: Yes
Tone (or timbre): The bassline, lil jon, the more spacy pads. Loads of tibre
Form: There is a verse, chorus, intro and outro.
Tempo: Upbeat tempo somewhere around 130bpm I think
Dynamics: Lots. Loud bits, quiet bits, crescendos and decrescendos.
This song might not have the best examples of these elements, and some are going to be more emphasized than others (it's a genre thing), but they are definitely there.
So yes, this song is music.
(sorry for the pretentiousness.. I haven't got to wave my expensive degree around for awhile)
