Is this totally awesome or totally hipster?

My wife got me this great winter jacket for Christmas and I really like except for one thing - it's Tommy Hilfiger. I can't even explain the irrationality of it, but for some reason having the logo on my jacket (even though it's like 1/2" across) bothers me. So being a long time gamer, I have this idea to put one of these patches on the jacket over the Hilfiger logo:

Is this totally hipster? Or a great/fun idea?

FYI This is a patch you could get back in the Atari 2600 days by getting certain scores/times on Activision games. You just had to take a picture of you and the screen and send it in.

Sorry, if this belongs in the Advice Forum, please move.

LOL, I know, I'm doing it any way, regardless. But it's the first thing I can think of where it gave me pause and thought "Is this a hipster thing to do?"

Old school gaming patches are very awesome. They might be hipster too, dunno, but don't concern yourself with what's hipster or not. Besides, if you actually earned it, then it's not hipster, right? Wear it!

I don't know if it's the "proper" definition but I always saw it as this:

Hipster: Wearing something old/retro/quirky because it's old/retro/quirky
Awesome: Wearing something old/retro/quirky because it's awesome and you love it

So by my definition (the only definition anyone anywhere should ever care about), you are good :D

In my view it doesn't really matter what others think. You are never going to make everyone happy, and you want to cover up the Tommy Hilfiger logo, so I say do it.

I live in Park Slope, and trust me, that is by no means hipster. A hipster thing to do would be to use your parent's money on designer clothes that look like clean(ish) versions of something you'd find at the Salvation Army, then go home to smoke tons of weed and complain about the government.

That's not hipster, that's just retro nerdy. And being retro nerdy is awesome!

It might get you arrested in Russia, but I see nothing else of concern. The chances are it will be an interesting conversation piece.

Doooooeeeeet! Replacing a logo which you don't want to show with a awesome patch like that. Doesn't matter what people think. Just do it.

These days hipster seems to mean "anyone I think looks stupid", so you're probably already been called a hipster by dozens of people long before now.

Yeah, hipster has become the most useless insult in the history of man.

I think it could only be considered hipster if you covered the patch with a strip of bacon whittled into the shape of the Apple logo.

Seems like a fun idea, go for it.

In defense of people using the term, it's hard to tell the counter-culture rejects who intentionally look stupid from the ones who think they're cool.

There should be some hipster variant of Poe's Law, in fact.

I had to Google Images this Tommy Heffalump logo because I didn't know what it was. I was expecting something - I don't know - obscene maybe? Why you can't stand the sight of it I do not understand but if you want to slap something on it then just do it and screw what anyone else thinks.

I didn't know hipsters did anything other then complain about stuff.
So no I'd say this isn't hipsterish, quite cool actually.

Hipster also seems to have become limited to a very select style of old/retro/quirky stuff.

The fixie bike, that bleached camera font on photos, those old style glasses (without frames), old cardigans (on svelt guys) tight leather trousers, 'underground' synth bands, and anything with that stupid decorative black curled moustache silhouette on it (extra douche points if it's tattooed to your finger)

That's the one.

I think Hipster has now got to the stage where it is a defined identity. They are no longer the eccentrics forging their own style, but just like the punks, goths, emos, and metalheads, their counter culture has lasted so long, and become so widespread that it is no longer unique or different, but now just another recognisable clique fashion trend with its own defined rules, dos and donts.

Basically, if you have to ask yourself "Is this hipster", because you have never seen another hipster wearing said item, then it probably isn't, because unless it's widely considered a hipster trend to wear such a thing, it's not hipster. Their rules have been written in stone now, and official members of the Activision ski team are not part of it.

Hipsterism is defined BY caring too much what it means that you like what you like. You aren't a hipster because you like obscure bands and such. You're a hipster if you like or dislike things BECAUSE of their popular status. So really if you have to ask yourself, "is it hipster?" you're allowing yourself to think like a hipster.

Hipsters, as King of the Hill says "Don't seem to know what they like, just what they don't like".

Don't second guess what you like at the whim of any culture and try not to get sucked into one. I'm sure many would call me a hipster seeing as I prefer indie-rock'n'roll and refuse to buy anything brand name and have a burning passion for pointing out the flaws of everything I see. Not going to change to avoid it or embrace it, I'm just doing me.
