I know for one thing that Nintendo should not be using voice acting in their games. Mario sunshine had some of the worst voice acting in a video game. Even Kid Icarus is embarrassing. I hope they don't add voice to Zelda.

Now, we just need somebody to invent a program that can replicate an actor's voice and apply it well to a text prompt.

I know next to nothing about how text-to-speech works, but you'd think something like this wouldn't be SO far out there as to be impossible.

Kind of think fanboys are something that need to stay out of any video game making choice. Can't stand nitpicking, thats all fanboys do. Don't think voice acting is hurting anything, if the developers know that it is going to make money, then the voice acting is usually pretty okay. Of course every once in a awhile they think it is a good idea to replace the main characters voice for no reason in the second game. Got me a bit confused, but other than that, no. No more Pyramid Head in any Silent Hill game please, stop listening to fanboys!
I too am confused how fanboys made it into this? Are you in the wrong thread?

I have been thinking this about RPG's they used to have such amazing depth to them but now that is massively limited by voice acting. Others have made the points I would have made but I'd like to say also that bad voice acting is one of the biggest reasons gamers can become detatched from a game.

Just look at this monstrosity.

Video games in general: no, probably not. There's individual cases where it ruins things by being done really badly but it's not a harmful thing overall.

That said... I do believe that voice acting ruined the Final Fantasy series (and perhaps other RPGs by extension), regardless of whether or not it's done well. Before voice acting came along, the dialogue felt like it was part of gameplay. Nowadays, the games just feel like extended movies with occasional intervals in which you're allowed to press some buttons.

I suppose you could say that.

However, I'm chalking that one up under 'acceptable sacrifice'. I like good voice acting. It allows for better and more nuanced characterization.

Also, bear in mind that you could say the same thing for every single aspect of a game. High-definition graphics? Hurting video games. Animation? Hurting video games. Music? Hurting video games.

I find I get very little out of voice acting most of the time. I'd definitely trade it for more content, more dialogue, and more options.

What game is that? And why are the characters of Shadow Hearts all going by the wrong names?

Perhaps, though I'd comment that higher definition scales only with the number of models used, not the complexity of the narrative. Voice-acting is tied directly to the complexity of the narrative because more words means more voice-acting.

I'm approaching this from the perspective that more player integration into narrative is a good thing, so anything that encourages a linear story with no branches or opportunities for player input to have anything more than a cursory effect in dragging the narrative from A to B is a bad thing.

Linear narrative isn't a bad thing in itself (my continued support of the Pokémon franchise should show that much) but if all there is in the industry is linear narrative this medium is selling itself short.
