Sometimes maybe, but I don't think it's a massive trend or anything.

I've just noticed that a lot of things seem to be similar to WOW these days, for example the Navi in Avatar look like trolls (tall blue primitive people who have been forced from their homes) or in borderlands. A class called a hunter who also has pet and the games familiar colour coded loot system.

Have any other of my fellow escapists noticed this or am I jumping at shadows.
The question you should really be asking is:

Is Warhammer being copied?

You know... what with the origin of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.
Good job on that one!

People just don't think do they, Warcraft was not the first to do anything.

Look at some of the gear models from Torchlight compared so some of the wow arena gear from early BC. Same exact weapons scaled down. It really isn't that big a deal though. Good systems get copied and as long as the end result is also good then I don't take issue with it.
Now see the problem with that is the guys who made Torchlight are the original team that made Diablo 1 and 2. So they were with blizzard already it's not copying when you were the team doing stuff for past company ...is it? Maybe I dunno where I was going with this.

That is all.
Yes yes a million times yes.

Wow is an incredibly broad game, touches on all sorts of mythologies and archetypes but very little of it was originally Blizzard's idea, they just polished it to a mirror shine.

Well a lot of MMORPGs kind of do, but as far as setting and mythology goes WoW is far from original itself.

Possible but I wouldn't press the comparison too far. I am inclined to trust that those putting images into a multi-million dollar venue would check on such things first.

Anyway, games like WoW and Starcraft have managed to ruin the MMORPG industry. And, by ruin, I mean that any other MMO that is not similar to them, will almost definitely not succeed. =
Starcraft is NOT an MMORPG.
And if you say that it is the same with RTS's. Then i would like to point you in the direction of C & C and DoW.

how old is WoW? if younger than 6 then no. avatar isnt copying it.
WoW is 6 years old.

MMOs copy WoW, because it works. No other media I can think of copies it. It's just kind of generic fantasy.

City of Heroes is the only MMO I've played that doesn't remind me totally of WoW. But that doesn't mean much. CoH is pretty poor really. I miss my level 50 and I miss people arguing with each other over what strategy people should take. Generally my Kroenen-esque scrapper (who could basically tank after such lucky enhancements) could take out most mobs on his own so I loved the angry messages of 'WTF CDI V.2! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?' followed by 'You got off lucky, CDI... Don't do it again.' All I'd ever need was a healer.

Didn't Bizzard take two popular MMO machnics and combine them. I don' want to say for certain and be wrong twice [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.174759-Crash-Bandicoot-has-died-today?page=3#4937874].

Let me guess, you are fairly young, right? I don't mean that as an insult, don't get me wrong. It's just that EVERYTHING in WOW was copied from somewhere else, from the visuals to the game mechanics to the gameplay. The only way you might see others copying WoW is if you weren't around for the earlier stuff.

The color coded loot system was around longer than WoW, as were Pet classes, etc. If anything, WoW brought some existing things into the spotlight, but didn't invent them.

Yes, my mistake, I must have been thinking of something else.
