Xbox Live Silver version is free, but that just makes it so you can add friends, send messages, and buy stuff.
Gold is cheap though, I think it's 60 dollars or so for a year of gaming, which isn't half bad, all things considered.
60 dollars is bad, considering the fact that for nothing, you can get a service from another company (I'm referring to Sony's PSN) Which is just as good as XBL
But on the PS3, the system itself is more expensive(If you're buying the regular hard drive and not the huggity big one) and there are better exclusives(IMO).

EDIT: I meant better exclusives on the 360...>.<

A while back I heard that X-box live was going to become a free service, but nothing has come of it since. Does anyone out there in internet land have any information?

Don't see what the problem is with a lot of people here, paying for XBL isn't a problem at all considering that it's not overly expensive and is an EXCELLENT all around service.
This.

I sure hope they don't make it free. If it was free it would probably deteriorate into something like the Wii's or PS3 live system. Or in other words teh suck.

Well the difference in price between the 2 systems is less than 3 years live membership. As for better exclusives, its really a matter of opinion.

Xbox Live Gold will never be free, because the money payed for the subscriptions is used to keep the entire service afloat.
Silver is, and always has been free, but you can't do things like ranked online multiplayer, and it allows you access to some market content about a week before everyone else gets it.

do you watch SentUAMessage? they actually explained this last week

That would be the worst idea ever!! How horrible do you wan the server to be? The maintenence would never happen or be 1/2 assed on every glitch fix.... my proposal is that xbox offer a platinum package along with the gold and silver. Let it be $100 a year and no one under 18 would be allowed to join. All game content would be free to download instead of this ticky tack download somthing for a retarded exchange rate of 80 points on the dollar. This service would be available by dedicated servers so your Gears of War game never ends when a loser quits. The maintenence would be monthly instead of semi yearly and you could connect with those who are on Gold and Silver on your own terms. The only thing that would get you banned is if you pretend to be older than 18 and are not and get caught. Then you are banned for life, your system is flagged and never available to play live again. Bill gates and your internet service provider come out to your house, Gates kicks you in the nuts (ensuring your squeaky voice never leaves you) while the cable guy rips the insulated high speed cable out of your walls and replaces it with silly string.
I was a kid once too, but my balls dropped when I was 11...
Correction - That would be the worst idea ever...

Not all gamers are poor. Get a job that makes it possible to pay for somthing you can demand quality from. Live for a hundred bucks a year is still less than 10 bucks a month... maybe when you can grasp the concepts of quality and appreciation you will stop jerking off into socks and move out of your parents house.

I was just about to mention that.
And I don't mind paying for a good service, it never messes up on me and it's not that expensive, a year of XBL usually costs around the same price of a new game, so instead of buying a game you wont play after a week, getting XBL for a whole year is the better choice.

I pay $40 ( U.S) for 13 months of live.. now I may be a woman, and blond and things like math confuse me and my poor poor weak female mind, but that's still only a little over 3 bucks a month.

so through live I get demo's early, more game/system content, video/movie downloads through Microsoft, or netflix, online gaming etc, alot of special events and the likes..

it's not free like silver, it's really cheep anyway.

I love Live. And guess what I barely use my Xbox and I still keep a Gold Membership.

Cause for ten bucks and some change here and there I can watch all kinds of shows and TV if I want, and I can play RB2 with friends and all kinds of other stuff....which happens like maybe....two or three days in a whole month.

Yeah I don't use my Xbox at all, I'm on my PC ALL THE TIME....due to it being where I work and where I play, but I still don't mind paying for Xbox Live.

But then again I also pay for 4 WoW Accounts, only one of them is mine, the other three are friends of mine who are college students and, thusly, destitute, or one of them is my e-girl love crush, whos played every game with me I've played in the last 6 years but still refuses to get a divorce and come live in sin with me....damn the luck.

I also have like 3 CoH/CoV accounts I pay for.

I dunno what all that works out to, like 120 bucks a month mostly.

But guess what, you spend that on cable.

Whereas I, who refuses to let the God Box control his life, don't even watch standardized television....so I don't need cable.

So, for what I'd pay to get advertised at and brainf*cked by marketing 24 hours a day for a month, actually gets expended on giving me the ability to select my own entertainment, and...have fun with my friends who I don't get to see in person much any more due to our very different lives.

Lifes good, when you can make these kinds of choices.

I guess if you're 16...its a little different.
