You Guys are either are from somewhere outside of the USA or just poorly informed, but nothing ever happens to teachers when it comes to dealing with students. Hell, I remember hearing an NPR report about teachers who have been legally deemed guilty by the court of law for sexually harassing students, and the teachers punishment is this paid probationary period where the teacher sits in a "rubber room" and files papers all day while getting paid.

I'm fairly well informed (my mums a teacher and I used to help her out at her college) but I am outside the USA, UK in fact.

Har Har, that would be hilarious, but heart attacks are slow, (not like in movies where they clutch their chest, my dad had one, I would know), you start sweating and get chest pains and get tired easily...

The teacher is an idiot obviously...not much else for us to say. She won't get fired since the Teacher's Union is one of the strongest out there as far as letting people go is. They usually just get transferred.

That list is true, my english teacher was insane, my physics teacher was 60 and acted like whe was 20, my calc teacher didn't care what we did in class, and my ss teacher was a vietnam vet.

Also, why is it always the English teachers who are the bitches? I've been out of high school 15 years now and I still remember two of them---the two teachers who beat the love of writing and literature out of me, something I didn't get back for years. I still whisper a "fuck you, Miss Lind" under my breath when I get praised for my creative writing works even today. It's like a mantra.

Amen to that. Bad English teachers can ruin English Literature-loving children. Also, having to learn boring literature. My English teachers were and are actually pretty sweet (I'm hoping to read English Literature for my University course), but a lot of the stuff we had to read was not.

Things seem to be improving now (although a year of Sylvia Plath wasn't my cup of tea). Perhaps they kept all the good stuff for the older students.

Your teachers were probably bitter that they couldn't write anything decent.

Detention is fair, if not a weak punishment. If I the teacher I would have called 9-1-1 to save the person suspended this child on the spot.

That's pretty sick. At my college, the a drama teacher is MAKING a girl smoke a cigarette in a play despite her views against smoking, and other girls strip to their underwear.

Your college sounds a bit odd. The drama crew did Cabaret last year and the drama teachers made sure it wasn't as risqué. Not to say it wasn't, I think they just cut certain bits.

Calm down everyone, let's not get the lynching ropes knotted just yet. Was the teacher informed of the student's condition? Did the student in question have disciplinary problems that might have led the teacher to believe that this was anything other than someone acting out and being disruptive?

Lastly, can you honestly expect an english teacher to be able to diagnose and react properly to something like that? Let's not be too harsh in our assessment here, we don't know anything close to the whole story.

I had an english teacher like that once, she would almost always give me terrible grades and any creative work I did would be torn apart in front of the class. I even tested it out one time by completely plagurising a short story and she still ripped it apart telling me I should quit writing. After that point the head of English removed me from her class and put me in his, suddenly my grades went from D and F to B and C... funny that.
