It seems Billie Joe Armstrong doesn't like only having "one fucking minute"

He was high? Isn't he like 40+ and he's still smoking weed and putting on eyeliner?
Not much else to add but this was kind of cliche.

Honestly there should be no age that folks are suddenly supposed to stop doing something. Some obvious exceptions aside.

Manson still dresses up cooky (last I knew) and I don't think less of him for it. Good for him for enjoying himself and dressing like he wants to dress.

I feel the same way about armstrong, I've never been a huge fan of Green Day but the times I do hear their music I'm entertained.

Anywho, yeah, nothing else to add, just didn't think that was a fair statement. Being an adult is just faking that you aren't still a child.

First of all, watch this.

Watched it? Good. You may have noticed that Bille Joe Armstrong did not particularly agree with only having one minute of his set, apparently because Green Day's set was cut by 20 minutes so that Usher and Rihanna could have more time on stage.

But apparently that's not the case and now he's checked himself into rehab [http://content.usatoday.com/communities/entertainment/post/2012/09/23/green-days-billie-joe-armstrong-heads-to-rehab/70000969/1#.UF-fM41lSew] seeking treatment for substance abuse.

So, ladies and gentlemen, any particular thoughts on this apparent breakdown from Bille Joe Armstrong? Funny? Sad?

At the least all that use of the word fuck did remind me of this video.

maby if i respected green day at all (but i respect almost no pop 'punk' band because punk is not supposed to be pop, and for damn sure not have eyeliner...only the misfits can do that)

but as it stands, dont care. all three of those acts suck.

When I first watched the video yesterday I thought there was something odd about it and it did feel a bit fake, then at work I heard about the fact it was staged and well...
Theres not really much to say about the video, to me it sums up perfectly what I think of Green Day post American Idiot.

Not a big fan of Green Day but I know what it's like when they tell your band to wrap it up early for someone else. It's not a good feeling.

More Usher for less Green Day? Sounds like a good trade to me.
Trade the positions of Usher and Green Day in that sentence and I completely agree with you.

I always remembered this guy as being a total jerk to his fans.
Really? I mean, I haven't followed them closely or anything, but every time I catch glimpses of them, they are awesome to their fans. There was a story I heard a few years back where they took a fan on stage and let him play the guitar for one of their hits.
Yeah, as far as I've seen they're pretty good to their fans. Didn't Billie Joe stop in the middle of a song once to chew out a bouncer for manhandling some kid at a concert?

In any event, I'm not so sure how to react to this. I have to admit it seems kind of immature to use "we've been playing since 1988" as a reason to be respected; just because shit's been around a while doesn't make it decent. Not to mention the fact that, as has been mentioned, their set actually wasn't cut, so he's complaining about pretty much nothing. On the other hand, I do think that Green Day is a pretty great band and I'm tempted to support Billie Joe on stupid, blind fanboyism alone. Besides which fact... can we really call this a meltdown? Is saying "fuck" a lot and smashing a guitar really unexpected from a rock band, particularly a punk band, pop-punk as they may be? It just doesn't seem like a major enough act of wanton, irrational assholery to qualify as a "meltdown."

I understand why he was angry and I think he had every right to be, but it was quite a poor reaction. I think they'd have been better just playing on regardless of the timer.

Other people are wrong for liking Usher, though, right?

I agree, it's no excuse. The only good thing to come from this is he realised he needs to be in rehab. Which is where he is right now.

I don't think there's an age limit on eyeliner, though, is there?
I think Dave Grohl summed it up the best.
"If you like Kesha then listen to fucking Kesha"
It doesn't matter who/what you like as long as you like it. Usher is not my cup of tea but other people like him.

Well... I'd cringe if I saw my dad in eyeliner. But hey, if you think a man wearing eyeliner at 40 is cool then all for it. Just reminds me of Boy George.
Well in fairness, this guy was in his 40's in the 1990's and was still on top at the time....

I'd rather see the one with makeup....

This is what we old guys/girls used to call Rock 'n Roll. I was never much into Green Day (or punk in general) but mad props to him that there is still some emotion left in the industry

Music in the mainstream has lost all emotion. I hate to say this but smaller bands are the best, I give in, you win hipsters. I went to a concert at a small venue with three bands I've never heard of and came out having the most fun I'd had in a while.

*sigh* Anyone else feel this was mostly staged? Guess I am just a cynic. At 30 years old, should I be hardly surprised? I have not listened to Green Day on a regular basis since the 90s, also, even though I enjoyed their music, I always remembered this guy as being a total jerk to his fans.
Having seen him live and front row three years ago, I can say first-hand that he was not at ALL a dick to his fans.

He was (and still is) the most fan-centered performer I've ever seen, and was a fucking riot live. He called up at least three people to help him sing, called up one dude to play guitar for Jesus of Suburbia, called up someone to shoot a high-pressure water gun into the crowd, called up an 8-year old kid to play as some sort of 'saved' kid or something, and a few other hilarious things.

He may have changed since the 90s, or may have just had a great day, but when I saw him, he was a total bro.

The worst thing about stuff like this is that we seemingly have to discuss everything to death these days.

24h news channels, news websites and blogs with their fucking comment sections have led to a culture of opinionating over every little shit that goes on instead of the shit that matters to us. Before coming to this thread, did anybody really have an opinion about the apropriate age to wear eyeliner or the appropriate behavior of ageing punk rock sellouts?

We come to this thread, read news that aren't news, form an opinion that is absolutely useless and discuss this as if any of us really care. We're arguing for the sake of arguing. And I feel this is what the internet does to us, it turns us into arguers. Perhaps the Republican-Democrate-divide is only possible because we've become accustomed to entrenching over everything.
I'm just quoting this for truth. How many threads on the Escapist are colossal arguments over things entirely irrelevant to anyone involved? We don't have to an opinion on everything, and there are a great many things we should not have opinions on because we don't know what the crap we're talking about.

He went out with a bang. I respect that :D But seriously, 25 minutes is just not enough and I think that was stupid of the organizers to cut their performance so short. I'm a lighting technician by trade and I know that's a situation you should never get into. All the performers should be treated as equals and if you feel like you should give more time for other people to perform, then add time. If you think you can piss off someone performing, sure you can piss off the officials as well? If you can't face their wrath then let people play as long as you promised they would have time to.

I was at that concert.

And the guy you quoted is thinking of Radiohead. Those guys treat their fans like garbage.
Was it the concert in Seattle summer of '09? That's the one I was talking about. The kid they got on stage incidentally was going on tour with them, and when they took him on stage, they just gave him a guitar not expecting much. Turns out the kid fucking nailed it before they realized they didn't even give him a monitor. The whole band loved him for it.

I just heard about it on a local radio station, because they got the kid to go on the radio to tell the story. Seriously, the WORST thing I've ever seen Green Day do was moon a bunch of fans grouped around a window to the waiting room of the place (barber shop? It was a long time ago on VH1)they were sitting at. I don't even call that bad, just playfully crass.
