It's Against my Religion

My environmental science teacher is paranoid about anything bad for you or the earth, and refuses to get X-rays because of radiation/increased chance of cancer so whenever he went to the dentist they would always try to press him to get X-rays and get in a 20 minute fight until a few years later he told them it was against his religion and they never asked him about it again.

Is religion a valid excuse to avoid things? Also what's to stop people from making up lies about their religion (or creating fake ones), because my teacher is christian and their is nothing in the bible saying you cannot get X-rays. Is it different if it is part of their true religion such as the "Should Muslim women remove their veil in stores?" thread?

It's valid to an extent. If someone makes it up, it's bull and shouldn't be done, but if it's something as simple as "I don't eat cow" or "I wear a veil", power to them, as long as they truly believe it.

I've thought about things like this myself.
If a religion keeps you from having fun or doing something that may potentially prolong your life then you need to find a new religion.
People are generally afraid of attacking religion. I would say that's why the dentists never pressed him to get X Rays.
A full blast of X Ray radiation would kill you pretty quickly anyway. You wouldn't have much time to worry about cancer. At least that's what I've heard.

Jehovah's witnesses aren't allowed to get blood transfusions because they believe blood should not be passed from one body to another, so if they get into major accidents their only options are to either die or take the transfusion and risk going to hell. Religions are funny!

If you think God really wants you to avoid valid medical practices, ask yourself this. Why did God, all knowing and all powerful, gift Man with the insight to come up with these technologies, which have been proven to save lives? Do you honestly think Satan is working through your dental practitioners by helping you avoid jaw infections now, at the cost of the negligible chance of cancer in 50 years time?

A while ago, there was a story about a girl who's parents refused to get medical treatment for her because they believed God would heal her. All I could say to that is, "Why are you slapping God in the face by refusing the healthcare technology that He gifted us with the intelligence to discover?"

It sounds like he's making excuses and nothing but. I had five x-rays in my tummy on Wednesday, about a week before, one for my skull, and I'm going in for another two tomorrow, and I can promise that I'll be alive after tomorrow's.

He's just making excuses. :/ He's controlled by fear, not rationalization, and rides his religion for his agenda.

It's only a valid excuse if it's an actual religion. If you just say it's against your religion because you don't want to do something ("I can't clean the apartment it's against my religion") then no, it's nothing near a valid excuse.

Very, VERY valid point here. Unfortunately, fanatically religious people would tell you that it's Satan talking and giving you those ideas there. So apparently cognative though was a curse from the devil.

If that's true, I'm off to hell, there will probably be better discussions there!

Many relgious restrictiosn started otu for a reason, the reason the bible condemed eating shell fish was becuae it made peopel sick. rather than saying "they can make you sick" they said it was against god and got much better and healthier results.

The problem is when these restrictiosn lose there purpsoe, or there reasoning is forgoten. People simply msut be informed.

This is is more of an explaination for there restrition for eating or preforming soem actions and doesnt apally to all senartios.

Hard to give a definitive answer. I'm all for multi-culturism but a line has to be drawn somewhere. For example one could argue that in an Arabic country it's perfectly legal for a 30 year old man to marry a 12 year old girl. However in Western culture and law that is considered pedophelia. Of course you could bring up thr ancient greek argument but in contemporary western society that's not acceptable.

Also some may refuse to recognise Western law as their loyalties are to Sharia law. It's a matter of you only get what you give. If you make a little concession here or there, the other party must be prepared to concede part of their religion/ heritage/ whatever.

If your religion keeps you from getting needed medical treatment, then so be it, it's your loss.

The "fun" issue is still up for debate...not everyone may share the same definition of fun. I for one do not think that getting hammered at a bar is fun, partially because I don't see the point, and partially because it's not exactly a good Christian thing to do.

As for medical treatment, I'm up for just about anything besides killing a person and harvesting his organs. While I do understand Christian Scientists and Jehovah's Witnesses not wanting to do medical things, to me it's just terribly impractical, even for a religious person.

That's when you turn it around.

God bequeathed us with intelligence so we could recognise Satan in all his forms and cast him aside. Only stupid people, manipulated by the Prince of Darkness, would disagree with rational, Godly thought.

Then you call them stupid until they lose their temper and try to kill you, then you probably run, because there are more stupid people in the world than you.

I may just try this some day...

the example of the dentist is slightly unique in the aspect of passing off religion as a good excuse to not do things. The Hippocratic oath taken by all doctors forbids doing certain things, I'm not sure if the use of religion as an excuse or reason to not do things is specifically mentioned or simply interpreted but if you say something is against your religion to a doctor, they will not do it.

89% of the time religion is holding us back, not that we want to become a Rapture(Bioshock), where everything is so immoral it lead to the abominations of God that in that place.
Relgion does good but only to keep people, people, and people are stupid, but religion can or can't be, all religons have their 1 stupid thing.

I think its your choice what to do with your body, however YOUR relgion shouldn't effect the outcomes of somebody else, like a son or daughter. If it will help them DO IT, even if its breaking your morales...

Now you see the Light, so stand up for your right.
