The difference being? Of course they can be wrong. My opinion is that the world is flat. Is that not wrong?
Alright now I just think your an idiot. There is factual proff that sais the world is wrong. Therefor, that is not an opinion, but a falsehood.
Goddamn if that doesn't make me laugh every time I read it. It seems you can't grasp use of analogies to prove a point either.

An opinion is nothing more than a belief. That you can believe the world is flat is still an opinion, and it is still wrong. Thus, it's a wrong opinion. Logic. I highly doubt the guy you quoted actually believes the world is flat. It's called proving a point.

Yeah, well.... that's just like...... your opinion man....

Just take that as a sign you win the argument. Plus that statement only covers so much. You can't just claim gravity or the fact WW2 ended is somebody's opinion.

On purely subjective matters such as music or art that is maybe a valid thing to say as you can see merits or downfalls that other people may not credit as highly as yourself.

This reminds me of a conversation I had in college; a girl said to me: "I have the right to my opinion" to which I replied: "Yes, and we have the right not to hear it".
That's one of the best comments i've read yet. =D

But, making your opinion known, is a vital part to having an opinion, other wise is it not just a thought? Can you have an opinion, if no one ever hears it?

(By the way, thats not directed at you "machines are us", that's just my opinion... on opinions... about opinions... oh dear, opinion has stopped sounding like a word to me now.)

Please, if you're going to be stupid, at least spell it correctly.

The problem is people misusing the word "opinion" to mean "what I think about a fact".
"Blue is a nice colour." is an opinion.
"The Earth is flat." is not an opinion, it is simply wrong.

"If I wanted your opinion, I would remove the ducktape."
"Opinions are like butts, everyone has one and most of them smell."

You can have your opinion, I just want you to know that it's retarded!

Teeheehee! I'm right with you there. In fact, I'll help you with that facepalm, because doing it yourself would never be strong enough to convey the right amount of disgust.

"Well, I don't mean to offend anybody, but..."
...I'll do it anyways. Suckers.

This one gets me angry because you know there'll be something really offensive coming right up.

Good argument is when "Ideas argue, not men".

Besides the only opinions that can't right or wrong are ones like "I like blue more than red", "I think carrots taste awful". Basically, only thing subjective is what causes you enjoyment or displeasure.

However, opinions like "homosexuality is wrong" can totally be wrong... It's actually one of the most annoying things about the world that people think ethics are subjective (while of course at the same time secretely thinking they are the only one right). Of course that's not true.

Another thing is that if something can't be proven one way or another, people assume it becomes a subjective thruth, which it doesn't. It just means there's a probability for either one to be true... Odds which are highly in favor of not-true if it's another case of "Well, I have no proof it exists, but you can't prove it doesn't! Ha-ha-ha!"

In short, the only time it's "just your opinion" is when it's a matter of taste (which I admit is well enough to drive me crazy sometimes).

Just because you have a right to your opinion does not protect you from being wrong.
This.

Basically as long as we are not debating anything grounded in fact you can think what you want.

But if your opinion is for example, the sky is pink well that is wrong.

An opinion does not apply to facts.

Anywhere else though, its fine and should be respected.

I use this line all the time, yet I haven't seen Lebowski. I've been meaning to, though. Way too many people tell me that it's awesome for me to just skip it.

Opinions aren't bad. Opinions against a fact are annoying.

This phrase can be annoying as hell when used wrong, so I say you reserve the right to your opinion about ranting about people saying it's their opinion and such.

When on a forum, I use that phrase sometimes. Mainly to tell people I'm not trying to arrogantly state a flat unchanging truth... But the way I personally feel about something at the time I say it... My opinions change constantly...

And I grow tired of people trying to argue me out of a periodic feeling, thinking I was specifically quoting fact, that's of course not fact... y'know?

You guys clearly didn't get what I was saying. I said he was an idiot becuase he doens't understand the defenitions of the words he's tossing around. Opinion is not a synonym for belief, it's a very similar word, but not a synonym. Somebody mentioned that I can't grasp analogies, they were wrong, I understand that it was an analogy, it was just a very poor one because it wasn't an opinion, like I said. It's not like I called him an idiot because I think he believes the world is flat.

I actually don't see that there's as clear a distinction as you're suggesting, as I said in an earlier post, things don't just neatly fall into categories of right/wrong hard facts and subjective opinions. It's not obvious where you should draw the line between the two, and I'd argue that there isn't really any difference at all. They're both opinions, one is just generally agreed to be a closed issue, whereas the question of the niceness of blue remains open.

What makes you think that "homosexuality is wrong" can be wrong but "carrots taste awful" can't be? The only difference is you consider (rightly, in my opinion) the issue of homosexuality being right or wrong is pretty much decided, whereas the issue of the tastiness of carrots isn't.
