This reminds me of a conversation I had in college; a girl said to me: "I have the right to my opinion" to which I replied: "Yes, and we have the right not to hear it".
Agreed, some people need to exercise the right to remain silent. Especially people who believe in political correctness.

"It's just my opinion". There are few phrases that get me foaming at the mouth as rapidly as this one.
Almost every debate I get into, whether in real life or online, the person I'm talking to inevitably falls back on that old reliable "it's just my opinion" and the person saying this generally assumes that this is immediately the end of the argument, because everybody is entitled to their opinion, and who am I to be critical of theirs? Essentially, most people seem to assume the subjectivist view that all opinions are equally valid, and consider anybody who doesn't share this assumption as intolerant and arrogant.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I use that phrase because there are some times when you can just tell that someone is gonna get all up in arms over what you said. It's happened to me several times on this forum. I say something and someone who disagrees jumps my shit and tells me how I'm wrong, and they usually try to force me to see it their way. So, I say, 'this is just an opinion, don't jump on me and try to change it.' Reason is, I think things though. I try to have an intelligent, informed opinion, instead of just thinking something for no reason. So when someone blindly jumps in and tries to force me to change my opinion, it offends me. And it just gets really old besides.
"It's just my opinion" is a phrase that doesn't really mean anything. An argument is two or more people who have different OPINION(S) about something. In fact a Forum is a place where a lot of people give their opinions to different Questions.
So...yes we know it's your OPINION and that doesn't need to be stated, also my opinion is that some of these people are....(In the famous words of Yahtzee) "pants on head retarded".

Getting that out of the way, I want to explain why I said "some of these people are pants on head retarded".
1. I would be a Hypocrite
2. I do it for the same reason as "Emperor Inferno"..."there are some times when you can just tell that someone is going to get all up in arms over what you said."
Other than that don't state the obvious, we know it?s your OPINION !
Exactly.

Yeah that's true but the DSlite is an improvement on the DS, the DS is an improvement of the Gameboy and the list goes on. Sure it may not always come out better, worse even in some cases like the DSi, but if we didn't try to make things better we wouldn't have what we have today.
Very true, but in cases where the 'improvement' seems more like an impulse addition I can understand why people would use it. That usually isn't the case, since it seems a lot of people use the phrase the condemn something they simply hate that really does have improvements over the original item.
There is nothing wrong with trying, but I have a hard time accepting an item that adds things and turns out worse in almost every respect than the item it's trying to replace. Especially when it's made by the same company, it makes them seem like they are desperate for more money instead of really improving their product.

I guess those sort of upgraded versions are used to show that the company is keeping up with devices being released by the competitor companies. So the concern is more with new buyers than existing users.

On topic. I think 'It's just my opinion' can be an acceptable response. For instance, I believe gay marriage should be allowed, and if you dispute me I can defend that and reason with you. Of course it is such a subjective topic ( as is all morality), without a right answer, that at the end of the day it is just both of our opinions. I'll think you are wrong and you'll think I am wrong... without any real way to settle that. Unless you agree with me :)

I also disagree with someone way up who said that opinions weren't based on anything. All of my opinions have reasoning underneath. Otherwise I wouldn't have them.

There's nothing wrong with someone's opinion. Maybe they don't know why they think that way.

So next time somebody tells you your opinion is wrong, don't regurgitate that pathetic old phrase, tell them why it's not wrong.
The problem is that you can do this, and then they don't accept your explanation, and this leaves you with bugger all except "it's only my opinion".

Ultimately that is all it is. Unless we are talking about interpretations of fact (the colour of the sky, the precise weight of a Subaru WRX, etc) then opinion is subjective.

it invalidates any point they were trying to make. it's when they're tired and you've worn them down and you can jump up and say, "I have won"

They realized that they can't even convince themselves that they're right.
