Opinions cannot be wrong. They can be based on misinformation, but I'm afraid that it is perfectly valid if it is actually their opinion.

There is no truth, there are only versions with truth like qualities.
No, being misinformed and drawing conclusions from that is exactly what being wrong is about.

And there is "one truth". Like I said in the first place, it's simply foolish to assume that just because we can't determine for certain what the truth is, it becomes subjective. It only becomes a matter of probability.
For example, we might never know if Big Bang is really how the universe began, but there's reasonable chance it did. Big Bang isn't a matter of faith or opinion or fact, it's a possibility.

I normally only say that when I see a debate going nowhere as I am completely sure that my opinion is right but am sick of hearing arguments that I have already heard a hundred times and which I can bring within reasonable doubt (the arguments not my opinion).

However, I can admit when someone else seems right and I always do if they present their case with a level of tolerance for the opinions of others. i.e. I don't if they just go, you are wrong because you suck you uber-noob *rattle of a bunch of biased facts*

So, to that saying, I have no issue as long as it is not used as an evasion. If it is used as a truce or a sign that they have accepted my opinion but still believe their's then I have no opinion one way or the other about whether or not they use it.

The difference being? Of course they can be wrong. My opinion is that the world is flat. Is that not wrong?
Depends on the angle you look at the world :p

Yeah, kind of bugs me that you cant have proper discussions anymore for fear of being called out as a racist, sexist, anti-INSERTFAVORTIEMINORITYORPOLITCALSUBJECTHERE, or discriminatory because somehow, someone came up with the concept that all schools of thoughts are valid.

Jeez, these days, discussing anything is like discussing art, everything is art... so nothing is art, but there is no bad art (because its subjective) but then there is no good art (because taste is different)

Now everything from whats the best LOLS Cat to is this religion violent turns into "everyone is entitled to their equally valid opinion" Try pulling that with a mathematician/statistician or a logic professor in college

A is not B
B is not C
A and B and C are all equal.... what the hell... might as well divide by zero and end this universe.

You could definitive in a few arguments, like universally, murder is wrong (even society with sacrifice or death worship have rules or separation from ritual to everyday life... we all play Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, it does not count as endorsing war or murder.) etc

The following arent actually directed at any particular person (im saying you, as in the reader)
How about, my opinion on Iraq is different (maybe more valid) because I am in the military and have been there, whereas you are at home and haven't?

Does that mean only gays can have an opinion on the legitimacy on homosexual marriage? that would be a little skewed

What if only the families of murder victims decided on death penalty... again, experience defines opinions, but sometimes skews them... even I am getting woozy playing Devils Advocate with myself

Please forgive my grammar (its 6AM by me, and I haven't slept in a almost 2 days) (Hell, I don't even know if these posts are coherent)

I think the point is nothing to do with facts, its vague concepts of right and wrong etc (What is better, black or white) Is homosexuality right or wrong, is abortion right or wrong. Things that cant be concretely and statistically proven, but may very well have one answer anyway.

Alright now I just think your an idiot. There is factual proff that sais the world is wrong. Therefor, that is not an opinion, but a falsehood.
You do realize he was just using that as an example of an opinion?

Agreeing to disagree is better. In my opinion anyway.

I say let people believe what they want to believe. If it doesn't hurt anybody what is the harm of the opinion being wrong or not?

Just because you have a right to your opinion does not protect you from being wrong.
Pretty much this, exactly.

The problem with most people hiding behind the "opinion" defense is that there's a fine line between discussing people's opinions of a game, and discussing cold hard facts about the game. If I make a topic saying Game X is terrible, and you pop-in saying "Well I like it and that's my opinion", that's great and all, but I'm not here asking who likes the game. I'm here saying the game is bad, so either provide some counter points, post in support of my point, or you have nothing to really add to the topic.

Note that just because a game is bad doesn't mean you can't like it, another common misconception. Take Xenosaga, for example. From a purely gameplay stand-point, it's a terrible game. The combat is poorly balanced, the stats system is fairly clumsy, and some of the bosses pour it on just a little too thick. Yet, I still like the game. Why? Because that's my opinion. It's a terrible game, but I still enjoy playing it (mostly because of the story). Would I have enjoyed Xenosaga just as much if the game played itself and I just watched? Probably.

I can have my opinion of what things I like, but that doesn't automatically mean that it was well-made.

Well, interpretation of art is subjective. It's my opinion that even the creator of a piece of art can't tell you what it really MEANS, that's something everyone decides on their own. So in that case, opinions would be relative. If you know anything about Dry Landscape gardens, that's kind of what I'm talking about. What you get out of something is often what you bring to it.

But when it comes to entertainment, there are certain conventions and pitfalls which tend to indicate a lack of quality in something, like the horrible camera work in Quantum of Solace or the terrible scripting and casting of Transformers.

but that logically people should use it as the guidance when deciding how to live their lives.
Why?

Why is it not equally valid to use pleasure and pain as a guideline, but aim for causing as much pain as possible. Or perhaps aim to keep the levels of pleasure and pain in balance.

And why are guidelines for living your life that ignore pleasure and pain completely, or only account for them partially, less valid?

The problem is people misusing the word "opinion" to mean "what I think about a fact".
"Blue is a nice colour." is an opinion.
"The Earth is flat." is not an opinion, it is simply wrong.
I actually don't see that there's as clear a distinction as you're suggesting, as I said in an earlier post, things don't just neatly fall into categories of right/wrong hard facts and subjective opinions. It's not obvious where you should draw the line between the two, and I'd argue that there isn't really any difference at all. They're both opinions, one is just generally agreed to be a closed issue, whereas the question of the niceness of blue remains open.

Besides the only opinions that can't right or wrong are ones like "I like blue more than red", "I think carrots taste awful". Basically, only thing subjective is what causes you enjoyment or displeasure.

However, opinions like "homosexuality is wrong" can totally be wrong... It's actually one of the most annoying things about the world that people think ethics are subjective (while of course at the same time secretely thinking they are the only one right). Of course that's not true.
What makes you think that "homosexuality is wrong" can be wrong but "carrots taste awful" can't be? The only difference is you consider (rightly, in my opinion) the issue of homosexuality being right or wrong is pretty much decided, whereas the issue of the tastiness of carrots isn't.

He's basically trying to say that the issue of homosexuality is based on objective moral standards while the tastiness of carrots is based on individual tastebuds.

So he's trying to say Homosexuality is ok, full stop. While carrots can be tasty or horrible depending on the person.

I would say this view is wrong because everyone has a different moral standard so You can't possibly create a truly objective moral standard. Which means it's really impossible to decide whether anything is "right" or "wrong".

AH HA! LOL Anyway thats the Catch 22 of this argument, maybe I think art is objective... prove to me that im wrong, and because its objective, some art can be bad, which leads into another argument, do you think there is such a thing as bad art? This is making my head spin....
heres a funny way of looking at t

Homosexuality is wrong for me (though I have never tried it)
Carrots are wrong for me (though I have never tried them)

If I am any sort of Christian, Is it not ok, in my beliefs to say that Islam, Judaism, Hinduism etc are wrong for me, even though I have not "believed" in them? kind of defeats the purpose of religion.
Opinions and views are like clothes, we change them all the time
Religion, Art etc, are spiritual, and like skin, we are "born" into it, and rarely change.

You raise a valid point, and I have to agree. One thing this will still not solve though is obviously the religion debate as faith isn't an opinion its a belief, even if it is unreasonable and invalid, but that's just my opinion :p

Another phrase that I personally don't like

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Well then how would all those innovations and new better versions of what you have come into this world? Such as food. We wouldn't have our delicious stakes, bacon, pies and such if people didn't make them (or attempt) to make them better. Or video games. Do you really want to be stuck staring at Pong graphics?

Yay off topicness!

OT: I don't know how to disagree... You seem to be right :/
Sometimes an 'improvement' on something turns out to be worse than the thing it's supposed to replace.

Think of the DSi when compared to the DSlite.

That is a place where I can understand the term perfectly.
Yeah that's true but the DSlite is an improvement on the DS, the DS is an improvement of the Gameboy and the list goes on. Sure it may not always come out better, worse even in some cases like the DSi, but if we didn't try to make things better we wouldn't have what we have today.

"It's just my opinion". There are few phrases that get me foaming at the mouth as rapidly as this one.
Almost every debate I get into, whether in real life or online, the person I'm talking to inevitably falls back on that old reliable "it's just my opinion" and the person saying this generally assumes that this is immediately the end of the argument, because everybody is entitled to their opinion, and who am I to be critical of theirs? Essentially, most people seem to assume the subjectivist view that all opinions are equally valid, and consider anybody who doesn't share this assumption as intolerant and arrogant.
Emperor Inferno said:
I can't speak for anyone else, but I use that phrase because there are some times when you can just tell that someone is gonna get all up in arms over what you said. It's happened to me several times on this forum. I say something and someone who disagrees jumps my shit and tells me how I'm wrong, and they usually try to force me to see it their way. So, I say, 'this is just an opinion, don't jump on me and try to change it.' Reason is, I think things though. I try to have an intelligent, informed opinion, instead of just thinking something for no reason. So when someone blindly jumps in and tries to force me to change my opinion, it offends me. And it just gets really old besides.
"It's just my opinion" is a phrase that doesn't really mean anything. An argument is two or more people who have different OPINION(S) about something. In fact a Forum is a place where a lot of people give their opinions to different Questions.
So...yes we know it's your OPINION and that doesn't need to be stated, also my opinion is that some of these people are....(In the famous words of Yahtzee) "pants on head retarded".

Getting that out of the way, I want to explain why I said "some of these people are pants on head retarded".
1. I would be a Hypocrite
2. I do it for the same reason as "Emperor Inferno"..."there are some times when you can just tell that someone is going to get all up in arms over what you said."
Other than that don't state the obvious, we know it?s your OPINION !

This reminds me of a conversation I had in college; a girl said to me: "I have the right to my opinion" to which I replied: "Yes, and we have the right not to hear it".
Can I tell you that you are awesome? That's a fact by the way.
