Because my opinion is better than yours, by merit of it being mine. Or something along those lines.

It has to do with people wishing to appear knowledgeable. Powerful. Important. If I can impose my views onto someone else then that makes me better than them. More of the aforementioned words. In many ways it's petty but it still happens.

I couldn't agree more. Recently I have found myself saying "each to their own" so often that I'm thinking about getting it on a loop and just pressing play whenever I need to say it.

I have absolutely no idea why people have the need to say 'that's rubbish, this is better...' etc. but I wish they'd stop because more often than not its just a matter of opinion.

I'm not gonna jump on this topic's bandwagon and say "Well said, OP!". I disagree with your point. While it may indeed be your preference, another option may very well make you better off, if you open up to it. In other words, I don't see the whole "It's my preference"-thing as anything else than ignoring the superiority of alternatives.

So you tried PC gaming and it wasn't for you? That's fine by me. There are, however, plenty of people who bash at PC gaming without giving it a proper go ( and vice versa, of course ).

You say we should respect choices that were not made in ignorance, and I agree. However, I highly doubt that choices are really made with no ignorance.

I salute this thread. There's nothing wrong with having opinions and discussing advantages and disadvantages of things, but when people are stubborn and just go with the fingers in ears 'lalalala this is better cause I say it is and you're an idiot for disagreeing lalalala' approach, it becomes irritating.

Also proper photography i.e. film, dark room, fixer fluid etc etc is my personal preference too and I've used some of the best film and best digital cameras available to make that personal decision.

It's a very good point, I know I shouldn't care about someone else's preference but for some reason, if it differs from my own, my first instinct is to state why my own choice is the 'correct' one. I know that this is utter nonsense as there's never a correct opinion, maybe it's a defence mechanism, perhaps I see someone else unknowingly disagreeing with me as an insult.
Curiously, if someone just asked me what was the best operating system or which console was the best, I'd state a claim for the three main contenders, listing pros and cons for each before stating my own preference. However when someone tells me their preference first, I go on the defence, often with an assualt.
It's something that I am trying to rectify, so until then, please forgive me.

I don't usually care about another persons preference unless it's something blown out of proportion and made out to be far better than it actually is.

For my, that would be digital art (photoshop, paint shop pro, coral, etc).
Woo, it looks nice. It's faster. It's easy to cover up those horrid mistakes you made with a filter or a brush someone created.

Thanks, I'll stick to traditional. I like the feel of it, how you can't fix your mistakes with an 'undo' or 'save' button. It looks more appealing than digital, in most cases.
And my eyes don't burn mercilessly if I work on a traditional piece for long periods of time.

People like trying to change peoples minds about what they like because it reassures them that they have the best product. I have a lot of friends like this they always talk about how there things are better and i should switch to them it can get pretty annoying. Especially when you're roommate is like that.

Well, most of us have been in this sort of situation. You find something that you like, or want, and someone else comes along and says, "This here is better!" The other person proceeds to insult what it is that you like and tell you to use what they like.
Like Mac and PCs...
Consoles...
PCs and consoles...
Internet browsers...
jackets...
Digital and film...
Mulch.

It happens all the time. And I know there can be valid arguments from the other person's part, and I am willing to listen. I did change browsers when Xitel introduced me to Google Chrome, for example. However, it was still a matter of prefrence. I just liked how Chrome felt.
I know that half the posts about PC gaming being superior to all else are jokes, but what about the ones that aren't? I just like playing games on consoles better than on the PC. Its my choice, and my money, and I'm happy with it. I've given PC gaming consideration and have tried it. Its just not for me.
Or the times I chose to take pictures using my film camera rather than a digital camera. I like how it looks, the dark room, everything. I don't care that digital is "more efficient." Sure, its good for quick pics 'n such, but I'm better at Black and White photography with a 35-year-old Nikon in my hand.

OK, so I spewed out a bunch of examples in an attempt to direct attention away from those specific situations and on to the whole: why is it that people can't seem to respect someone's personal prefrence, when a choice is not made in ignorance?

(And I searched several times for a thread of this nature to no avail. Has one already been made?)
Conversion... superiority... ma'am.

What are you talking about? Xbox is much better than PS3!
And COD sucks, why would you even play a game like that when you can play Halo?

Everyone is guilty of it.

Of course, sometimes people are nice about it and sometimes others aren't so nice, to put it lightly.

Two possible reasons:

1) On a person to person level, where the other person repeatedly tries to unload their OS/Browser/Perfume/Deodorant/Dog toy of choice on you, even after you've heard their argument and remained with your choice, that person is an ass.

2) It makes money. People still remember the "I'm a Mac..." ads, more for their comedic value than their accuracy (I hope) but they still remember them. Which is arguably a cornerstone of good marketing. Same with those retarded herbal essence commercials. They're either trying to be right or memorable or both. Some people then associate with the ad more than the product it's representing and in the case of Mac vs PC, it's them saying "Look at how they portrayed PC users, you don't want to be like that do you?"

In either case, just ignore them. It may take some effort on your part, but it's a less stressful (and less enjoyable) solution than beating the stupid out of people for not letting you have your own choices.
You've got a painful but true point in the matter of advertisement...
I guess its an innate part of human interaction.
Interesting...

It's because the people complaining how their "personal preference" is not being respected are themselves usually unable to simply call it "preference". Instead, they come up with incorrect, ridiculous or just plain stupid rationalizations, and (deservedly) either get corrected in a positive manner, or laughed at.
