I'll still be calling it Football, with it being a game involving a foot kicking a ball ;D
Does that mean cricket has something to do with bugs?
Yes cricket is that game on survivor where they eat bugs and grass.

I call both sports football, granted I am not into sports much but as an american I prefer football over handegg. It just seems like more fun at a faster pace. Why yes I am a consol gamer first how did you know? ( I still love my pc though)

Soccer is an informal term.

An equivalent would be like if England insisted on calling Basketball "Hoops" and got we angry and defensive whenever an American pointed out that the proper name was Basketball.

Not that I care about these barbaric pastimes.

Ohh, I get it now. So it became known as Association Football, to seperate it from Rugby Football, and then became Soccer for short. So then Rugby Football in America got shortened to Football.

Then they thought "We don't like getting hurt." and put on loads of padding.

it is now called BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
BZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I used to care if people called it "soccer" or "Football." But now I don't give a shit, as long as they love the sport, that's all I care about. However, I must say that it's not only the English that are snooty; the real American manly men take great pride in wearing 80lbs of armor and trying to grab each others' genitals while tackling.
This pedantry goes both ways, and if the sport is to grow, it has to change.

Old news is old. It's Football, get over it Yanks.
This, pretty much. Despite I've known for a while, all the article shows is that 'Soccer' is a word the English coined. The game is known as Football worldwide and it will remain at that, regardless of where the word or term originated.

Aha so i was correct, now i dont have to say "Football" every time i talk about soccer on the escapist to avoid the "You silly Americans, its called football not soccer, you gave it your own name because you are jelous that your country didnt invent this sport."

Bollocks I say.

Words and languages evolve. We used to call it soccer, now we call it football. And so does the rest of Europe (in their own languages ofc but the words mean the same thing)

However the use of the word 'soccer' in American English doesn't bother me at all really. What does bother me is the phrase American 'football', but that's another story...

Any besides it's not like it needs to be separated from Rugby football anymore, 'cos everyone just calls that Rugby nowadays.

So by that logic, we should all start calling rugby "rugger"? Because that retarded term has the exact same origins as "soccer".

Tell you what, as soon as the general audience starts calling rugby "rugger" and American football "rugger with extra padding", I'll start calling football "soccer". If you're going by who started what, the term "football" has been around far longer and is used far more widespread than "soccer".

Besides, I'm Dutch and we call it "voetbal". Which, in case you hadn't guessed, literally means "football".

Hooray for that, i guess.

I just call it soccer because i already have another football code that is dominant in my area, and calling both of them football would be confusing.

I don't care what you call it, just don't try to correct me when I call it soccer... 'cause it's wrong.

I've always known it as football, footy, footer etc.

Fair enough. I don't think anyone has a problem with football being called soccer or vice versa.

I must admit though football becomes rather pain when you say you like football and someone asks "Who is you favourite running back or quarterback?" and I think for a minute and say "no no football - not American football!".

At least soccer removes confusion, although I must admit I can't understand why American football is called football - it sounds like false advertising ;)

I knew that, but there is obviously a reason we ditched the word Soccer and went back to calling it football, because that's what it is football.

Also, I guess it's a stand against Americans always saying that they are right about it on the internet( yes I know, generalization, but you know the people I'm talking about). 'Soccer' is a girls game, it's not violent enough. Then why don't you call American Football, VIOLENCE, since that is all you seem to care about.

Call it soccer, I don't mind if i'm honest. Usually though on the internet I have to say something to let Americans know that I am not talking about American football, I am talking about Football, so why not add in the , It's football! Not soccer! it's much more interesting than saying (soccer). You feel like you are giving in to the Americans, adding extra text just so they know what you are talking about. So, pride I guess.

[small] sorry that seems all over the place but it's 1:26 and i'm tired [/small]

Never really understood the monumental deal everyone makes out of what the sport is called. Here in the States we call it soccer, to distinguish it from our sport of American football (which I think a moronic term, given that it mainly has to do with catching and throwing with your hands). The rest of the world calls it football. That's okay. But maybe I only think so 'cause I've never been a big sports fan myself, not for any sport.

Most of the unique words of the American dialect come from the old English, so I'm not surprised.

But in all seriousness, I didn't know that. I always thought soccer was just something the states came up with to differentiate itself from other people. Like using a system of measurment other than the metric system...
Why don't we use the metric system?
No. When Britain's slang and lifestyle was evolving the Colonies didn't exactly keep up, the Imperial system with miles is from Britain, as are pounds. While Britain kept adopting new things America wasn't obligated too, so things like soccer would stay.

Well, calling soccer football lets us call football American football. And that's hilarious, because leave it to the Americans to call a sport in which you use your hands to carry an ovoid 'football'.
