Interesting.

But why is American Football even called Football? The most the foot ever gets involved with the ball is for a kick off.
The article covers that. Rugby used to be referred to as rugby football, Rugby football evolved into the game we call American football, the rugby was dropped and the game has sense been known as Football.

That's no excuse.
Actually its the perfect excuse, and it makes complete sense. The history of the sport makes complete sense as to why it would be called Football. "Rugby Football" was cut short to just "Rugby" and "American Football" was cut down to "Football" in the states.

I've always called it football because that's what I was taught to say , however soccer is just as correct because it comes from football's full name "association football" American football however is perplexing as the hands are more often used, I prefer my name for the sport, "rugby played by pussies in armour"

also as for the poster I think the word "condesention" is out of place as I've never really thaught myself better thean americans for calling it "football"

You do realise that they wear quite a lot of soft padding in Rugby League, right?

Question: Why do people get so annoyed if it's called one name or another? No matter what word someone uses you usually know what sport they are referring to. So what if there are two sports called football if one is truly confused all you have to do is clarify american football or soccer.

You have never had to go through the mentally scarring experience of having the marathon bar renamed to "snickers" overnight due to globalism and heartless corporate imperialism. It hurts man, it really hurts. I can't even go into shops any more thanks to all the incorrectly named confectionery.

I'm amazaed so many people are suprised by this? There was an original game called football, which pretty much had no rules, just get the "ball" to the other end. Then posh people introduced rules, and they disagreed, making Rugby Fottball, and Soccer Football. Rugby later slpit to union and League. Each of the colonists developed their own type. Hence Aussie Rules and American Football.

Most European Countries reffer to it as football though, and as vastly more popular sport, I'm gonna have to side against the soccer

It's still football, because football makes more sense, whereas soccer makes none.

Meh, Football involves ball & Foot and vastly over paid men whining every time they get tackled, where as American football involves large padded men taking a break every five minutes because they are really out of shape. both suck.

now what I really think has the wrong name is the baseball World Series. why is it called the world series? does the world participate? do they even know its going on half the time? No, its pretty much just America. so why is it called the world series??

That article calls soccer a synonym of football. Surely that makes your title void as either word is correct, neither more so than the other.

I knew that... And I don't see the problem with Americans calling it soccer.

Ohh, I get it now. So it became known as Association Football, to seperate it from Rugby Football, and then became Soccer for short. So then Rugby Football in America got shortened to Football.

Then they thought "We don't like getting hurt." and put on loads of padding.
Close but no. Rubgy is very different to Grid Iron. Do American's call NFL Grid Iron? That's what it's referred to by everyone I talk to.

I'm in Australia by the way. We call AFL ("Aussie Rules" Football - Google it.), Rugby League, Rubgy Union and Soccer "Football".

I live in the USA so if you say football I'm going to think of the NFL. On the internet it's a little more iffy. So context helps a lot. In the end it doesn't matter. Also, we DO kick the ball in our version of football. There's the Kickoff, Punting, and Field Goals. It's just not the main part of the sport.

Also what does Cricket have to do with insects? The Hammer Throw looks more like a 'ball and chain throw' to me. Etc Etc.

'the Gridiron' is a term for the field itself around here. I understand that elsewhere in the world some call our Football that for simplicities' sake. Makes sense.

I think it's less to do with origination and more to do with the fact that the entire world calls it 'Football' except the USA. It's kinda like how you think we're pricks for driving on the left.

The main problem isn't that Americans call football "soccer" but that they call handegg "football".
The fact that rugby used to be referred to as rugby football should have clued you in on why that game is called football. Or did you get it and you just wanted to make the handegg dig cause you find it cleaver?

Rugby football evolved into the game we call football, the rugby was dropped and the game has sense been known as football.
Yeah, I didn't know that at all. I'm just an idiot who posts things without knowing what he's talking about. Huh huh huh.

Anyway.
Doesn't it strike you as slightly odd that when you lot had two games who's name included the word "football", but both also had names that didn't include "football" that you lot would choose, out of the two, to call the one where you pick up an egg shaped object with you hands "football" and refer to the one where you keep a ball at your feet by it's other name?
