Pfff we created the sport and we can decide what to call it and when.

We should change it more often actually, I propose "Ball-fu"

I call it either way. Soccer, because, well most people I know call it that. Football, because practically everyone in a Spanish-speaking country calls it futbol. That's football in Spanish, kiddos.

Finally we have the most approriate and favourite argument that we Brits use against Americans and other foreign English speakers; it's our fucking language, we'll speak it however we like.
Which begs the question of; Why you tend to bother us about American English?
American English isn't a language. Thats why. You could call it a dialect, but I wouldn't say so. Our northaners may say things like "t' pit" But all they've done is shorten the word "the" to the first sound.

You've changed spelling, grammar ect, which is more butchering a language than a dilect. again, our slang sounds don't change the way words a spelt. Yours magically does.

So by that logic, we should all start calling rugby "rugger"? Because that retarded term has the exact same origins as "soccer".

Tell you what, as soon as the general audience starts calling rugby "rugger" and American football "rugger with extra padding", I'll start calling football "soccer". If you're going by who started what, the term "football" has been around far longer and is used far more widespread than "soccer".

Besides, I'm Dutch and we call it "voetbal". Which, in case you hadn't guessed, literally means "football".
In Australia "Ruggers" has a whole different meaning.

Actually, everyone 'in the know' has now agreed to stop calling it either 'football' or 'soccer'
it is now called BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
BZZZZZZZZZZZZ
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
(warning: lower your volume)
I am all in favor of officially changing Football or Soccer into BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Either way, BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Is a boring sport. At least we now know why BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz is called Soccer.

Why don't we use the metric system?
We tried at one point; Congress actually passed some legislation saying that the US of A officially uses the metric system, but the populace as a whole wasn't really very familiar with the measurements, and we couldn't implement it efficiently enough to make a difference.

On topic: Chalk one up for the 'States. Thank you, Pete, I knew soccer came from an acronym, but not its origin.

I don't understand why people get so defensive over a name. I understand football makes more sense, because it does, but some people treat it like it's some major insult to the sport. Honestly, people need to get over themselves.

Then you missed the point of the article you quoted.

Football is it's real name, soccer was slang, a shortening if you will.

And most people's problem with the name "soccer" isn't so much the actual name, as it is the American's claim to the name "Football" for their own pussified bastardization of rugby, which the rest of the world calls "American Football" to emphasize that only Americans play it.

Sorry but no while it was routinely referred to as soccer as slang the standardized name for the game always was football.
Also americans can't seem to get over the fact no one else in the world cares about their sports and does things like this to draw attention to themselves, sorry for the rant but Americans can go fuck them selves when they attempt to one up the English on sports.

Oh also we have a quite enthusiastic Rugby league.
Actually, it's more likely to be a Union as most Rugby Union competition level organisations call themselves Unions, and as far as I know Union is far more popular in Canada than League is (especially as it's far more popular in most countries than League is).
I bow to your superior knowledge of Rugby, I'll admit I 5-pin bowl (which is a League) and the only sport I mostly watch is hockey (again League play) and I just assumed that Rugby was organized as a League as well. This is why I like the internet, you get to learn something new with a little effort.
