Now the question is whether the multiplayer will have an unlock code.
I've heard a lot of people already saying that is the case.

Back onto the main topic, I don't care much for multiplayer in most games. Personally I'm hoping this is just an addition like Dead Space 2's that doesn't shorten or take anythign away from the main game unlike Call Of Duty titles which just tack a single player mode onto a multiplayer game.

However this being Bioware and the rather successful Mass Effect series I don't see them ignoring the single player mode at the very end of the series when they have to make the biggest impact.

Well i doubt when ME3 is released even the most generous reviewer will be able to call in an RPG so hey, add some carriages to the trainwreck, see if i care...

Hmmmm... Not really sure I'll be bothering with the multiplayer much, to be honest.
I worry that BioWare is listening to its idiot publisher a bit too much, but then again, maybe the ability to see all your friends' version of Sheperd would be kinda cool.

Not totally sure, but, like Miracle of Sound said,as long as the single player story campaign grabs me by the short and curlies and refuses to let go as it's always done, I can't see it being a problem.

Because there aren't enough multiplayer shooters these days.

Pointless, but I don't think it'll do any particular damage. I do think its a sign BioWare need to learn who their games are catered to though.
Also this. Seems Bioware's trying to get everyone and anyone to buy the games. Or at least the call of duty audience, since they said in the past that's the market they want. I predict this game's multiplayer dying out in a month or two.
Two to three weeks. And now may we all slap our dicks on the table in honour of the bet.

It's not like bioware cant make a good multiplayer experience. Look at Neverwinter Nights.

Sill I'm not a major fan of Bioware despite what my avatar might say. While i do sort of believe that Bioware isn't what it used to be they still may be able to pull something amazing off. I have a feeling they won't though.

Well, since the overwhelming string of posts seems to be leveled firmly in the 'It's the worst thing since ET the Game' camp, I'll point out the possible way of doing it that would be really cool, cutting and pasting my own comments from the last time this came up and everyone started whining in the thread about the pre release options;

Funky thought, what if 'multiplayer' means the ability to have two other players playing the rest of your squad through a mission? Not just the fighting, but also the cutscene/dialogue wheel segments? The host playing as Shepard while the other two play as the squad members of their choice, getting to chose the RP options for Garrus or Wrex during a cut scene would be pretty cool, getting to integrate the role-playing of all three players into one unique cut scene.

Or...maybe...every player has two characters, one is their Shepard, the other is their 'multiplayer character' You create them to fill a niche in someone's lineup if they want to do an online segment with other players. You'd get the opportunity to create a character of any species, Krogan, Turian, Quarian, etc, flesh them out just as completely as Shepard. Maybe a background, key points and personality segment for each that dictates their speech options during the cutscenes. Your multi-player characters would develop just like your Shepard, but there would be a different skill tree and bonuses for playing them that you couldn't access as Shepard. While on the inverse, you'd receive bonus XP for hosting other players, and you'd have aspects of your skill tree that would only be accessible to Shepard. It would give you an incentive for playing as a host for a multiplayer segment so you can level up faster and gain bonuses for your play throughs with bots, while you'd gain a different roleplay and combat experience playing as a squad member.

You could throw in a command role for Shepard and XP bonuses for the team members for fighting as a unit and completing objectives that your lead Shepard set. Plus you'd get the chance to play as a Krogan Warrior, or a Quarian Marine, or any of the numerous Citadel Races that we've seen as supporting characters at best and the Fanboys are desperate to see more of.

Conceivably you could play through the entire game as a 'backup squad member' building XP with your character and seeing the adventure in a different light, being a part of a different 'Shepard experiance' for the finale of the game. Perhaps there would be an option for players to form ongoing parties so that they could play the entire story of ME3 with the same characters in a trio.

Just a crazy thought about how Mass Effect Multiplayer could work really well and be very interesting.

Sounds like it's just gonna be co-op. My Gold subscription is dead anyway, so all this means to me is I'll get to sell the online pass.

Aaaand cue the whining and rage from people who automatically make assumptions.

BioWare has an entirely separate studio in Montreal for the multi-player, so it's unlikely that the single-player is going to be impacted in any way. Why can't anyone ever be rational about things like this rather than immediately going "OH NOW IT'S NOW GOING TO SUCK!!!1!1!" Chill, people.

A multiplayer mode in an RPG game? I guess Bioware has finally cracked. Well now I'm definitely not getting ME3. I mean really EA? Tacked on multiplayer on an RPG series? Microsoft pulled the same shit with Fable and I remember how shitty that was.

I'm rather disappointed. They've diverted resources from the singleplayer and put them into multiplayer, when Mass Effect was a singleplayer series, people played it for singleplayer. Mass Effect does seem to have been leaning towards the shooter side of "shooter RPG" and hopefully this isn't a sign that the balance has totally tipped.
All that needed to be said... you have said.

Seriously, I am disappointed. It is like the entire gaming industry is giving people like me a big "Fuck you"! More multiplayer and more console focus... The RPG epics seem to be dead except for Skyrim. What terrible disease is this? After reading that rage article I want to stab, but now? I want to maul!

Wow, so much flipping out on this thread. Especially since we don't even know what kind of multiplayer it is! Everyone is already acting like the single-player got shot in the knee and gimped out of the gate without even knowing how this will affect the game if at all.

How about this everyone: wait until the article is at least out and/or until Bioware says something about the multiplayer before you grab your pitchforks and light your torches. Or better yet, wait for the game to come out and see for yourselves whether or not it's good or crap.

For me, this isn't a big deal at all. If they do it right, the multiplayer will only add to the Mass Effect experience. If it is bad, then at least they tried to do something new which is more than most developers are willing to do nowadays.

I HATE it.

Reason: The multiplayer will 99% sure be shit and ALL of the resources spent on multiplayer COULD have made my single player experience that much more awesome.

Fuck you Bioware. 100% unnecessary.

Apparently it's been confirmed by a tweet from Casey Hudson that the multiplayer consists of co-op missions.

Do not want. This reeks of some shitty Bioware/EA compromise. Bioware has always done just fine without multiplayer. No need to go mucking about with something that already works just fine.

EDIT: If it cooperative multiplayer, I'd probably be okay with it.

What are your thoughts on this?

Think it will affect the campaign in a negative way?

Personally... I am not too keen on multiplayer in ME3. But maybe it'll be fun. I don't mind as long as the SP is still as amazing and long as before.
Off topic:

I find it very refreshing that, even as an Escapist contributor, you still take the time to engage in forum discussions unlike nearly all other contributors. While individuals may or may not like your content, rest assured that we are all still appreciative of the fact that you still present yourself as a member of the community.

Thanks.

I think a lot of you are looking at this wrong. I seriously doubt its a Call of Duty style competitive multiplayer. Its probably going to be more in the spirit of Fable's co-op, except hopefully better done.

I have no idea how it will turn out. I don't particularly care that it will be included, but I am willing to give it a chance. Until I know more, or until I, you know, actually play the game, then I am going to withhold judgement.

Wait a minute! With-hold judgement?! Wait for evidence?! Act in a rational manner?! THIS. IS. THE. INTERNET!

The multiplayer is going to suck! Because my gut says so! And my gut has never been wrong (except for the times in which it was). Why WAIT for details! Details don't matter! That's why all our court cases are solved by the jury taking one look at the defendant's face to decide if they are guilty or not guilty, right!? Isn't that how things work!? Well that's how things SHOULD work! To HELL with facts, details or evidence! If I experience even the SLIGHTEST twinge of fear, that means that IT IS THE WORST THING EVER AND IT PROBABLY SET MY HOUSE ON FIRE OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT! There is NO WAY it can be good, because I am instinctively fearful and trapped in a permanent mind-set the insistently proclaims that everything in the past, by virtue of it being in the past, is automatically better than ANYTHING that could POSSIBLY EVER be made in the future!

I HAVE NO HOPE! NO CONFIDENCE! FOR IN THE GRIM REALITY OF 21ST VIDEO GAMING, THERE EXISTS ONLY FEAR! FEAR! FEAR! FEAR! NOTHING GETS BETTER! ONLY WORSE! WORSE! WORSE!

To the doom shelters! Run for your lives! The horrible monster of modernity and new directions threatens to envelop us all!

So the quality of single player will be reduced in order to have enough money to include multiplayer features.
I'm really not being filled with confidence for ME3 here.
