Now You're just being silly.........But David Bowie would be awesome.
All the Bowies would be awesome! Just think of the implications of the different versions of David Bowie fighting each other, like Ziggy Stardust vs. The Thin White Duke.

I just want to point out that David Bowie played Nikola-fucking-TESLA on Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige".

So yeah, I really wanted him to kick Raiden's ass, and then use him as an generator of free wireless electricity for the world.
"Thunder God? I am the man of the future!"
Damn, you beat me to it! Bowie as Tesla was a boss in The Prestige! And there's a Venture Brothers joke here somewhere; I just can't think of it now.
These ideas are hilarious and ludicrous, Yahtzee, and we need to get the word to WB Games and Nether Realm Studios NOW!

Mortal Kombat vs. David Bowie

Okay, bear with me on this one. The standard sort of alternate universe tossery happens and the Mortal Kombat crew invade the real world, but when Shang Tsung attempts to pilfer the soul of David Bowie, it fractures into every identity the popular singer has ever had. And so the roster is filled by such characters as the Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust and Major Tom. The final battle would of course be against Jareth the Goblin King, whose alarmingly prominent crotch bulge is simultaneously his weak spot and his special attack.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! And don't forget that he played Nikola Tesla in The Prestige, too!

Yeah, i think Iron chef vs Mortal Kombat would work

As for Game of Thrones vs Mortal Kombat, well i can definitely see it working but i can see two problems:

1. I shudder to think what Melisandre's fatality would be

2. Joffrey would basically be to the game what Vaan was to Dissidia: Everyone's punching bag.

because fighting games are kind of an essential part of the console local multiplayer experience
Which is precisely why they're dying on their arses - because developers and console makers increasingly see console local multiplayer as the spawn of Satan. It's online or bust, and fighting games - particularly at mid- to high-level - need too much timing precision to make that viable. This is of course a shame; because while there's obviously a deal of personal gratification in showing your superior skills by capping some guy in CoD, it's nothing compared to the fun and mutual joy to be had by the precisely timed slap-the-buttons-on-your-mates-controller manouevre that's been the bread and butter of MK for decades.

And there's only one MK-vs game left that needs to happen. And we all know what it is, and we all know that on the day it happens Satan will be skating to work.

"There have been no fighting games with all-new characters (in triple-A releases, at least) for quite some time..."
What about Blazblue? The first game in that series came out 2008, so it's not exactly brand new, but it's an original fighting game IP that was made in this generation. I daresay that Blazblue: Calamity Trigger and Street Fighter 4 are responsible for fighting games coming back for this gen.

Speaking of which, maybe you should review Blazeblue: Chronophantasma when it comes out on consoles. I know one-on-one fighters aren't your thing, but the Blazeblue series has mechanics that are fairly simple and easy to get into for a fighter, and the story and characters are a bit complex but still really well done, espicially for a genre that often barely has a story beyond "beat up EVERYONE".
True that the story and characters are interesting (I would love to see more Hazama style villains) and I love them as well (i've been trying to emulate Tomokazu Sugita's voice for a while) but it is also convoluted and insane. Mori-san has kind of written himself into a trap given the time loop of the past games and the arcade endings have not made it any better

Multiple parts have already been revealed and I have no bloody idea how it will work. Relius is trying to summon Master unit Amaterasu and get his hands on Bang's Phoenix: Rettenjo for the Kuishida's Lynchpin which can only be activated by the soul of a time displaced Celica A. Mercury, sister of Nine and summoned by Kokonoe. We have confirmation of Dark war era Yuuki Terumi and Kagura Mitsuki being in the game. Hazama makes reference to Nemesis Horizon. Noel gets control over her Mu abilities, and we now have so many characters with individual arcs that i don't know how it will be made cohesive.

I doubt Yahtzee will review it as Blazblue is notorious for hard to execute combos and general difficulty in addition to his general aversion and lack of precident on 2d fighters (this is the first time i've seen him review one). Calamity trigger tried to close the gap but another one of Arc System's games was more simple in mechanics: Persona 4 Arena.

The auto combo gets people into the game and the input time frame is larger than in Blazblue so it's easier to get combos out. Plus, the story and characters were already written out in the RPGs so you get much of the development done

I would like to propose a crossover that may satisfy everyone: Guilty Gear x Blazblue x Marvel x DC x Mortal Combat x Capcom. make it a 3v3 with all of the individual mechanics from overdrives to x factors to Astral Finishes to Fatalities intact and modify the capcom style cutscenes into super flashes and you have game that will satisfy everyone, even the old timers.

P.S. Is that Makoto Nanaya with rockets instead of tonfas on her arms?!?!?!

Yahtzee forgot one aspect of David Bowie, the Nikola Tesla role he played in The Prestige. Fatality, he clones you and the clone kills you.

True I guess. The plot arcs in BB are fairly convoluted and difficult to understand, like with any multi-timeline story. That said, I would like to see Yhatzee try and make sense of it and see what he thought of the characters, if only to see his reaction to Hazama. I would love to see that mega-crossover by the way. I'm still hoping Ragna will show up in Sony Smash Bros. And no, this is just a sprite edit I found on deviantart. It's sill tonfas, it's just she's wearing a proper shirt instead of half a sports bra.

Yeah, I would be fun to see his reaction to Hazama, it would be shock, admiration, or just a simple "that's Japan for you"

Ragna is sadly nerfed in Chronophantasma from what i heard, his damage is reduced basically. (They can never balance Ragna well) Well, there still is Jin and Hakumen in the top tier.

If i recall, the Blazblue series is not a Playstation exclusive, Arc system works is in close collaboration but i'm not sure if that's good enough justification and I don't know how well his controls and combo emphasis will transfer to the arena style of Battle all-stars.

For a sprite edit, it's pretty good though i would argue that the "southern hemisphere" as the Japanese call it is part of her personality (she is a free spirit who does what she likes) and a good source of the comedy in the game as illustrated in the " Please help me, Professor Kokonoe" bit (next to Hazama's cat allergy, Ragna's fear of ghosts, Noel's REALLY bad cooking and Platinum's oppai lust)

MK vs. Touhou. It's already had a fighting game made of it. It's got a huge pile of unique and distinct characters. And it's weird enough that nobody will blink an eye at another universe showing up on their doorstep for a battle royale.

Curse you, Yahtzee! You write an article that makes me want to comment instead of lurking. I LIKE lurking. :(

Oh well. On with some undirected rambling.

If you're gonna be have a vs. Bowie game, you might as well throw Andy Warhol into the mix. Bowie played him in Basquiat. Just picture it. You could beat your opponent with portraits of Marylin Monroe or whip them with your scarf. For a Fatality, you could crush them into a Campbell's soup can. Good times.

And is it only me, or when Yahtzee suggested a vs. Vertigo game, did anybody else think of Spider Jerusalem? Beating an opponent with the Chair Leg of Truth, putting out cigarettes in their eyes, a Fatal Intestinal Maelstrom bowel disruptor Fatality, Spider yelling profanities at the top of his lungs and throwing dog carcasses at the screen...

Yep. That's some undirected rambling, no doubt.

I would play the shit out of a DC Vertigo fighting game. I lost it at this line though:
This also got me to crack up. Oh... John Constantine. Is there any character in any kind of relationship to you still living? Your niece is going to erode her plot/child-armor sooner or later.

Oh, right. Now he's been interacting with the actual, mainstay DC characters. Those might be able to survive his friendship. Maybe.

Quick! Befriend Superman!

Having just been watching the final season of Spartacus (a real return to form, although I do feel the sex scenes aren't really aimed at my demographic) I can't help thinking there's an opening for MK Vs Gods of the Arena. Could be awesome.
