NeoGAF really is one of the best forums out there, if only mods weren't treated as GODS with the amount of ban power they have. I really appreciate how well moderated the forum is and doesn't allow for racist, sexist bullshit of any kind. The problem is when it can often go too hard so what you are left with is a bubble or echo chamber of everyone regurgitating the same viewpoints to the extreme until they peak outside to the real world and notice that what seemed certain was actually the minority view point. Despite that I still love the place especially because of how active it is, if only I weren't banned...

This isn't a "fuck you guys, you're all cunts and this is a shithole, I'm leaving" golden flounce award thread. He thinks the forum is going to go belly up soon, and he wants to find somewhere else for himself and other people on the forum to go to where they can continue to communicate. Fucking off without saying anything isn't going to help that.

I hope this isn't true, this is one of the few forums left where people seem to actually read others' posts, rather than just making short 5 word posts that are for some reason simply an effort to raise their post total.

I think what really kicks it out of the running for a backup forum though is the registration times. They're absolutely ridiculous.

Leave it to clueless executives to screw over what once was a great place.

RIP MySpace's FFF.

Never Forget.
I was so angry when I went over there to see my old old messages to my high school friends only to find my ENTIRE profile deleted.

You lot are being rather pleasant.

"We should migrate to a new site."

Well, that's the Escapist community spirit we all know and love.
Wow, I've never gotten the impression things were this bad. I like coming to this site, even with as little as is left, but I've almost exclusively visited Genreral and Gaming Discussions (aside from watching some shows when there were still plenty). And in those differend threads I thought people were generally OK with one another.

Guess it was kinda right to stay away from the social discussion stuff. Still, reading how much people enjoy finding a new site and refusing to share the names feels kinda sad.
The users here eventually formed clicks and separated. Many users already formed a group and left to another site already, never to return. Whatever good people stayed here once, have already gone. We're what's left.

I don't get this. Do some people only ever go to one forum at a time or something? I go to dozens of forums. I don't just go to one and stay there until something happens and then find a new one like it's a house or something. You can still go to other forums that you enjoy more while simultaneously coming here as well. This notion is baffling in general.

I might just make a thread on that. I have never used another forum and the notion that people would use multiple forums is weird to me :)

I'm curious which one of us is the weird one...

They're talking about coordinating a move from these forums to another to keep the Escapist community together.

Well, if you are an anime fan for example, you would use various forums, some focusing on specific series (narutofan for one was a huge forum but it started out on just naruto as the name suggests). Also if you are a game fan, you might use forums for the developer you enjoy so that you can have a direct line with them. I remember back when Atari had the dbz license I would visit their forums and we even had a community run game trailer which we all participated in creating for an upcoming game. Then you have various language-specific forums (my very first forum was a small Greek one back in like 2001 or something) and such.

So yeah, I would think that unless you have very generic interests without too much specialization, you would visit different forums that each specialize on one fandom or another. If anything, this forum is an outlier that is more of a general "gaming" forum that I only joined on a whim when people were discussing persona 4 and I wanted to respond to something, this being years after my first visiting the site to watch videos and such. I would find it weird if such a basic forum would fulfill all of ones needs. Though I guess some people just use facebook and reddit and stuff and those are enough for them so it wouldn't be the absolute weirdest thing ever.

The two people I ended up having to block and request multiple times to stop harassing me were toxic. When called out on the hostility and falsehood of the disparaging comments one made of me they flat out refused to apologize for preposterous prevarications then proceeded to continue the abuse. Some toxic people also are more adept at keeping things just on this side of passive aggressive and disparaging or are given a free pass for reasons I could be penalized to speculate on (or for reasons of which I am not aware.)
OK, that is pretty bad, but honestly, it's more the exception than the rule. In the future though, take my advice and just ignore any attacks on your personal character or whatever.

You've been on the escapist since 2010 and have 2,600 posts to your name. How can you possibly walk away with the impression it's the exception and not the rule? It's been a huge problem for years. It was fairly reliable for any conversation regarding certain topics (and threads not about those topics would be made to be about those topics within 50 posts) to be turned very hostile and passive-aggressive with personal attacks being dished out like addictive candy.

Anyways, I keep hearing about Dischord. Haven't done it myself, but I understand you can create something akin to "After the Escapist" and have whoever you like from the Escapist find it and join. Not my cup of tea as I'll likely just stop going to forums when this one dies, but the option is there.

I don't really know what to say. I don't remember such. Two things then:

1. It did happen to me as well, but I simply didn't consider it a big enough deal to remember.
2. I really was just that chill with everyone/uncaring in my posts.

Maybe it's a combination of the two.

Discord is pretty much IRC 2.0. It's great for IM as far as I can tell but not so much for actual huge discussions and long back-and-forths.
