its been bugging me for a while now that newer animes quality have gone down reaaal down, everiything i hear from my otaku friends (im NOT otaku) is about hafl gay vampire shows, one with a guy that turns out to be a wizard and summmons a real hot chick to fight for him (not as interesting as it sounds TRUST me) and one about a teenage assasin (really?) with a cat fetiche. Similar characters, boring excuses for never ending plots, "one in a a million episodes fight scenes" (meaning that they take LIKE FOR F**NG EVER to actually fight) and dumb filler episodes that just make you feel like blowing your on brains into the screen, to set an example im going to take it out on naruto, I mean, the show literally had over ninty filler episodes, oh wait let me say that again... OVER NINTY FREAKING FILLER EPISODES! (what ninty filler episodes? o_O) all Dragon ball Z references aside naruto didnt just have an entire hundred episodes to go about doing nothing going "sasuke, sasuke were are you!?" but he even had a SECOND show in wich actual interesting villains (orochimaru is just a super powered child molestor lets admit that naruto fans) and new plots could`ve been added instead it just wnet for the same goofy character goofing around looking for his ex boyfriend and just so happening to ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING every twenty episodes or so and even then the story developed even faster than the original naruto.

Now, not all anime is like this there are perfect examples of anime awesomeness around such is Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fooly Cooly, Mushishi, Cowboy Bebop (still best anime ive ever seen yet) and Hellsing, and even the never ending DB, DBZ and DBGT had their own little nonsense charm that we love to see (or maybe you saw it to see allot of muscly dudes because 15 percent of gamers are secretly gay...thats gonna bite back eventually) yes all this series shared the whole emotional trouble passed hero, the "cookie" character, and even waaaaaay to emotional teenagers (im looking at you Shinji from EVA 01) but with all of these this animes still maintained awesomeness be it the style, the actual charisma that characters had and not needing to have thirty or something characters to have plots and somehting happen (im looking at you again naruto...specialy you shippuden) theres also the movies, tokyo godfathers, the cowboy bebop movie, Paprika, all of these are still big on as my favourite movies.

So to whoever hasnt watched anime yet I suggest going for the ones I named up there, most of todays anime is still pretty cheese and bad the last time I checked, but hey lets give anime a chance to redeem itself right? maybe theyll even throw a continuation of Cowboy bebop ehhh...EHHHHHH?

P.S: if you know any awesome (and I mean reeeally aweosme anime) that are relativly new and could restore my faith to japan back to life, please do tell

I will say that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the only show that MADE ME want to watch it in over 4 years.
So Ill say that it's damn good.

Most of the stuff is god damn bland and uninteresting and moeblobs and blahdy blah.
While I will accept that Neon Genesis Evangelion was huge, and it did actually have a god damn story, it started one of the biggest, most god awful trends in anime history.
Namely, Boring ass main characters.
This was the point where main characters stopped being these larger then life supermen that would punch god in the face, to emo whiny fuckers, or just some god damn wooden dummies with barely any personality other then whine about how normal/uninteresting/japanese everything is

Sounds to me that you are not a fan of long series and the filler episodes that come with them. I haven't much to say in that regard but I will suggest a few recent animes that you may find interesting.
I will start with the most recent:

Angel Beats: Spectacular show I have to say the art style is by far the most amazing I've ever seen. Still on the air only seven episodes have been released so far.(Personal favorite)

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou: (Warning: very perverted and is based around mages and whatnot) Overall I found the show very enjoyable and is still on the air only 7 episodes released so far.

Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood: yes very common but still worth the watch if you haven't

Zero no Tsukaima: Mildly perverted and not too recent came out in 2006 but a interesting show as well an overlooked gem if I do say so myself. yes has mages. lol

Sola: an older show but also overlooked most certainly worth a watch if your looking for a story more driven by drama than "how long can we stretch this out"

Watch Baccano! for a very faithful 1930s gangster story with a little bit of alchemy thrown in. It also sports one of the best English Dubs of all time.

The above poster has mentioned Gurren Lagann and I must as well seeing how it's my favorite. Came out in 2007 and is a great story of a boy becoming a man using awesome robots.

Bakemonogatari is a great show from last season by animation studio SHAFT. it's very dialogue heavy with a lot of subtle humor, plus the art style is very unique.

Heroman's a great show that just started this season done by both Studio Bones who helped make Bebop and Stan Lee. it tells the story of young Joey Jones who controls a robot that he uses to fight crime and aliens.

I've heard amazing things about Angel Beats! but have yet to watch it.

Finally I recommend Clannad and Clannad After Story. If you don't cry once while watching them I don't think you have a soul.

Pani Poni Dash is freaking hilarious! It doesn't take itself seriously at all, it's random (think Robot Chicken on crystal meth), each character is unique, and it makes references to both Japanese and American pop culture. What's not to love?

I think the one with the wizard guy is caled "Faye stay night" and the vampire one I i dont realy remember, the teeange assasin is "black cat" wich bored the crap out of me in the second episode

oh @thr longman even if it was Neon Genesis who started the whole trendy of dumb emo boys in anime it actually WORKED for them fitting into the story and Shinji not being and actual "secret ultra manly machine of fists" but "just a little kid in a robot"

You should watch some Code Geass, I got the first season of it and thought "I'll watch a couple of episodes before I go out". I then cancelled all my plans for the rest of the day, sacked off my firends birthday party and just diligently watched it all, brilliant show on the whole.

Now searching high unt low for the R2 season.

Hmm, I couldn't really get into Baccona, maybe I'll try the english dub? It has made a difference before......

Awesome. There is no other way to describe that anime.

Bakemonogatari is a great show from last season by animation studio SHAFT. it's very dialogue heavy with a lot of subtle humor, plus the art style is very unique.
I actually caught this series about halfway through it's releases. Confused the crap outta me. By the time the next episode came out, I had forgotten what happened and had to rewatch the last episode. But once I got through it all, it was awesome.

Heroman's a great show that just started this season done by both Studio Bones who helped make Bebop and Stan Lee. it tells the story of young Joey Jones who controls a robot that he uses to fight crime and aliens.
For the longest time, I couldn't tell if joey was a guy or a girl. Then I realized they were imitating the emo style. That was pretty cool actually. Someone did their research.

I've heard amazing things about Angel Beats! but have yet to watch it.
Huh, this is the first I've heard of it. Well, first I've heard strong recommendations about it. Maybe I'll try it out....

Finally I recommend Clannad and Clannad After Story. If you don't cry once while watching them I don't think you have a soul.
...is this like Air? I don't think I could handle another story like that. I cried so hard......

AS for my recommendations to the OP.

Ah........nothing really great recently, most of it's been mentioned.

However, there are a few overlooked anime that are not too old.
Such as Sengoku: Basara (think DBZ, with samurai, and it's not Bleach) and other things. Do a little searching, I'm sure you'll find something.

Have you seen Bleach?
It's in the post DBZ/ DBGT era and I have to say it wasn't that bad. I watched the first 70 episodes or so online, until the end of the 2nd season, but then it started to have too many filler episodes and I got bored. A pretty good show though, it has a lot of fighting similar to DBZ.

If you have any interest in boxing, you should watch Hajime No Ippo. Not exactly a new Anime, but it's pretty good.

Series like Bleach are the entire reason there are posts like the OP.

At least someone can list a fighting series that's worth watching. That and History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi.

The English Dub does make a difference for Baccano!, it really does.

And yes, Clannad is like Air. It will toy with your emotions. But I promise that it has a happy ending.....that will cause tears of joy.

I'm not defending the actual anime (which was really friggin' bad), but in Black Cat, Train was easily in his early 20s. The only person who may have been a teenager was Eve, if she was 13.

You realize Bleach has been around for nearly a decade and they haven't done anything in the story. I think they've spanned a time of like two weeks in the Bleach world to our 8 years.

I'm just gonna interject here: The English Dub is EVIL. Sure, the dialog is good, and it's really faithful, but NOT ALL NEW YORKERS ARE FOREIGNERS AND/OR FROM LONG ISLAND! GAAAAH!

...yeah.

And to the opening, dude, ain't gonna happen. Unlike the games industry which is dominated by the west by our dunkets the anime industry is all by Japan for Japan. Besides us licensing some episodes here and there we really can't do much except complain on forums and laugh.
