Probably Times New Viking, they're fairly obscure unless you're into low-fi indie.

Also: I'd wager nobody here has ever heard of Crass.
Then you sir, would be wrong! White Punks on Dope Hope!

OT: Flux of Pink Indians?
I'll see your Flux of Pink Indians, and raise you one Zounds!

If you HAVEN'T heard of these guys you've been living under a rock...

Edit: whoops, I forgot to mention a band.

Lotus Juice
The Pillows
Hammerfall (This surprises me as I would think they're well known but no one I have talked to has heard of them)

That's about as obscure as I go, there aren't any record stores withing a 15 mile radius of our town so I'm pretty much stuck with what Amazon online/MP3 Ninja can give me.

Decently sure that's not obscure at all considering there was a five page article on them in GuitarONE magazine.
Well, I've never read it, and I'm the only one at my school who knows about them, so I'm sorry.

The problem with really obscure bands is they are either people that only play gigs locally therefore no one else knows them... or they're obscure cos they're crap and no one wants to tell anyone else about them...
Or 99% of people in the world are not their target audience.

You mention any Hip-Hop band that hasn't been on MTV or whatnot and I won't have ever heard of it, nor will any of my friends bar one.

Seems like this could easily get *too* obscure - just list small fry local bands, right? So I'm gonna go with "kind of obscure" instead of "the most obscure I could possibly think of":

The Causey Way

Japanther

Black Guys

Ronoso

Crash Kills Four

Pataphysics

Also, I have heard of: Kylie Minogue, Dropkick Murphys, Leadbelly, Thelonious Monk, Anal ****, Brian Jonestown Massacre, TV on the Radio, Beirut, Wolf Parade, and Crass.

I'll take your money, not least cos they put records out on the same label as the cure and bauhaus...

Here's a few for ya,

Glitch;
V/Vm
Lesser

Hip Hop (kinda);
Slotek
Restiform Bodies
Hundred Strong
Spectre

Electronic stuff (techno/D'n'B/etc.);
Elastic Horizions
Blasphenaut
Doormouse
Hanayo
To be fair, I'm pretty sure that was only the first run of their first album.

But yeah, they are probably the most well known anarchist punk band, so I guess I underestimated the Escapist.

Could also be because theres a lot of musicians that have never applied the phrase "target audience" to their working practices. And can't really help you with the MTV thing as I've NEVER watched it. I look for music, not wait for it to come to me.

Hmm...

The Synthetic Dream Foundation
Swallow The Sun
Quit Your Dayjob
M83
Firewind
Angelspit

Yeah, I looked through my artists in reverse alphabetical order, because I can. Probably not all that obscure, but I tried.

A little bit defensive no?

There is nothing wrong with a band having a target audience, if anything it shows they are aiming to please rather than to make a quick buck.

I don't watch MTV either, it was example of how mainstream a Hip-Hop band would have to be for me to have heard of it. The point being that obscure does not mean bad.

As for the last part, I fail to see the relevance to our discussion. I also don't see why it would matter if you choose to find music or let it come to you, it's not like it's a race or anything. It's just music.

Having a target audience at all is bad imo, make music you want to make, something that expresses you. Trying to cater to someone else ruins it.

Ahh! I Fold! I just know Crass and Flux of Pink Indians because my friends made an "Old School Crust Punk/Grindcore/Death Metal Mix" and those bands were on it.

Lol, not all obsecure bands are crap, some of them dont have backing of record companies, some of them are new, and some of them have music that only few understand.

Also Demelich is an obsecure old school death metal band.
Then there is Blackwater Park, of which i found out because Opeth named their album after them.
You spelled Demilich wrong

Yeah, but with the idiocy of people today (where I live at least) there aren't very many fans of Dokken either. Everybody here listens to alternative, pop/punk, or rap.

It was defensive, but the target audience comment seemed irrelevant. Bands that are obscure are generally isolated from their "target audience" due to a lack of media coverage/promotion, but I think my problem is obscure is a little undefined. AFX is obscure by many techno heads standards, but its an (obvious) pen name for Aphex Twin. Is a band obscure because they have no media coverage? Because they have no more than double digit sales? or because we're all ignorant of them?
