Most of those that I actually have seen on your list I didn't like, apart from Pulp Fiction which is one of my favorite movies.

Namely:

The Godfather
Scarface
Schindler's List
Rocky
Ghostbusters

That's right, I didn't like any of those. (actually Ghostbusters I thought was alright, but nothing special) That's not to say I couldn't see the objective greatness of The Godfather and Schindler's List (Rocky, Scarface, and GB, on the other hand, I consider to be mostly average movies in every way) it's just that subjectively I found them all extremely boring. Actually, this is the same for most 'classics' I am referred to. It's quite similar to how I dislike most 'classic' games.

Things age; and most things age badly. Movies (and especially games) are no exception. One of the most annoying things in the world to me is how people cling to nostalgia or a desperate need to be accepted by the indie-crowd of whatever medium they enjoy by following others blind nostalgia. Most forms of entertainment that were good 10 or 20 years ago are not good anymore because everything they did has been copied and done better. This is a sad truth, but a truth none-the-less; and one we must accept. Saying something was good "for it's time" is nice and everything but what actually counts when trying to enjoy something is: "is this good by today's standards, allowing me to enjoy it as much as I would have way back then?" if the answer is No, the movie/game/whatever isn't good anymore.

Rocky, Scarface, and GhostBusters would ALL get merely average-good reviews and a very small fanbase if they were to be made and released today, and I don't even think they would have any kind of cult followings either except perhaps Scarface. This can be said about a lot of 'classic' entertainment.

Movie snobs can go ahead and pop out from under their rocks to call me a troll now. =P

I shall now repeat the basic gist of what people seem to say here a lot.

"Your opinion seems different to the vast majority of people's here. You are either an idiot or a troll. How dare you go against the majority opinion of (melodramatic tones here, perhaps a single tear rolling majestically down my cheek) the last bastion of intelligence on the internet!"

Yeah, that's basically it. You've just reminded me of a lot of "classic" games that I consider to be anything but good - mediocre, boring as hell, would never make it if released today.

This is weird for me seeing as I watch ALOT of movies. I'm nearing 2500 movies watched at this point. Out of the list I haven't seen Patton or Citizen Kane but I've never heard of the first and the second doesn't interest me.

I hadn't seen the Shawshank Redemption untill the other month. There's a small group of us at work who are really into our films so we're constantly lending each other dvds the others haven't seen.

Anime would be the catagory I'll say I probably will never watch. It just doesn't appeal to me. I've seen a couple and I don't understand the hype, so whilst I'll happily watch foreign language films, animes will just have to go unwatched.

Titanic, Avatar, the Alien films, and pretty much every film that has come out in the last 2-3 years. I just do not care enoguh to watch that stuff. There's alot more i'm forgetting as well, but I don't really care for movies anymore at all.

Classics (including modern classics) I haven't seen are a mark of shame, not a badge of honor.

On the list of things I havent, but really need to see:

Casablanca,
Metropolis (the original),
Memento
Trainspotting
and just about everything on Moviebob's pre-1977 film list.

Once we get Netflicx up here in Canada, I'm planning on getting a sub, and firing up IMDB's top 100.

-m

edit: citizen Kane is one of those movies everyone should see - just because of it's cultural importance.

Metropolis is my biggest shame... Citizen Kane is a pretty significant miss for me, n'all!

I've never seen The Shawshank Redemption. My buddy's never seen Pulp Fiction. We give each other crap about it. It's a thing we have.

Sometimes certain movies just grab you and others don't appeal. For instance, I've never seen Titanic and I probably never will (I've seen it reenacted by bunnies in 30 seconds, that was good enough).

If you're going to watch any of those anytime soon, I'd say see Pulp Fiction first.

The only ones I can think of are Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Schindler's List, and that's it. Am I going to see them? Eventually, yes I will. I've seen thousands of movies throughout the years.
