I've recently discovered the joy of being abused by elitist music fanboys!

I mainly find it enjoyable to hate on music genres / artists when i'm talking with someone who shares my weiv of said crappy music. Though i have no problem with other people liking stuff which i think of as a big stinking pile of superficial shit with extra shiny corn in it.

Generally the people who will argue instead of discuss music are idiots who don't realize that their opinion =/= fact. Usually the same people who will attempt to insult you for not agreeing with them, and tell you that you know nothing about music if you don't like the same bands they do.

How are they "wrong"?

I have a friend who likes to pick on Triple J right up until the bands played on it make it big as they inevitably do.

Yeah.

So who else has had fun being the target of insecure displacement attacks from music fanboys?
Never had this problem with a music fanboy, but I did post a thread on IMDb stating that I did not enjoy Brokeback Mountain and I gave logical reasons why I didn't like it. I didn't insult anyone or anything like that, just wanted to see if I was the only person in the world who didn't like it because people seem to rave about it so much.

I got the biggest torrent of abuse from fans of the film, I was was called 'thick', 'homophobic' and I was also patronised to hell, with them telling me that I "didn't get it". WTF?! I got it, I just didn't like it, FFS. Where is there a rule written that I have to like a film because the critics liked it? Weird people. CBA posting on there anymore that much to be honest, too much abuse if you have a different opinion.

The really funny thing is that if tomorrow everyone liked Opeth and they charted at number 3, hed be saying he liked them when they were underground, your jumping on the band wagon, theyve turned shit and sold out.

Just be content knowing that he wont be happy until hes finished puberty, finally got laid and realised its only music.

You should name and shame him...

Well they're not acctualy really "wrong", what with the subjectiveness of music meaning that nobody is wrong (except people who think Soulja Boy is good, seriously wtf is wrong with those people?), I just hate most metal and the attitude towards other music of most of the metalheads I come across have and therefore personaly think they're wrong, but as you say opinion =/= fact.

See, having a fanboy/fangirl of anything harass you for not liking or getting something on the same level they do is pretty much guaranteed (sp?) to make you loathe it. For me, I don't like "Stairway To Heaven". And it's not even the song's fault. I understand that it displays an amazing guiter solo and is probably one of the most wanted songs on Rock Band/Guiter Hero since Free Bird. But I was first made to listen to it by a friend who, after he and his girlfriend spend the whole time listening to it with their eyes closed and head banging like some music angel is massaging their brain tissues with tones sent from God, asked me what I thought.

"Well, it was interesting. There's a lot to take in, though."
"..."
"Maybe I just need to listen to it a couple more times so I can soak it in better. I mean, I didn't like Steely Dan at first, but after a few listens..."

And THERE was my mistake. I had mentioned Steely Dan, as though as I was saying that group was on the same musical level as whoever the hell did "Stairway to Heaven". They aren't, I know that much. I was only saying that sometimes I need repeated viewings or listens to fully appreciate some media. I was then passed off as a music idiot for not thinking StH is the complete and utter shiznit. At which point, I decided screw it, I hate this song.

I'm still bitter about that. But at some point, I will stop pouting about it and give the song another go, and maybe I'll come to like it without someone berating me for not "getting" the right way.

Ah... music fanboys... The punk scene is full of them... It usually boils down to people calling eachothers "sellout" or "posers", luckily not everyone is like that.

Elitest _____ Fanboys are all bad. I know only one way to stop them...it involves a monkey, a February 2006 issue of your local newspaper, a used milk carton, a blue crayon, pizza, a copy of "Diablo" for the PS1, and a jetpack.

I've had a run in with Some Wii fanboys, So I showed them A picture of a woman with the Title:

AS LONG AS MARIO IS COOL TO YOU, YOU WILL NEVER GET 100 FEET NEAR HER.
Inaccurate, but possibly amusing.

Anyway, fanboys are fanboys: Subhumans who don't deserve to live, not because of their taste in music/games/whatever, but because they're all cunts.
Lol, thats why I like you Max, lol

I had an encount with a conspiracy fanboy who wouldn't accept that I found it highly unlikely 9/11 was a plot by the CIA.

If that counts.

Yes. It's hilarious.

The trick is to set up an argument you'll actually win, therefore once you do it's even more funny.

Music is "Each to their own".

That is all there is to it, even with pop/ r+b. If you don't like it, that gives you ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING REASON to bring someone else down over it.

I have a diverse music taste and enjoy agreeing and disagreeing about different bands, thats life. But if someone say's this for instance:

Dickwad 1: John Butler is shit.

Me: Explain?

Dickwad 1: His voice is samey and he can't play guitar for sh** compared to corey from slipknot.

Me: I like his voice, and he is extremely good inside his folk genre, his fingerstyle techniques are amazing. Also Slipknot is in a different genre altogether, therefore rendering your argument pointless.

Dickwad 1: Huh?

End of story.

:)

I happen to be a fan of Opeth, but I share your grief. I have had conversations before where simple discussions of music have gone sour. I'd like to say I have a pretty diverse taste in music, and so I try to be as tactful as possible when discussing any band/genre.

Some people just don't have any respect for your opinion. If I find myself in disagreement with someone, I usually just leave it at that and agree to disagree. But I, too, have been beaten down in a fiery flurry of misguided fanboy rage.
