I've recently discovered the joy of being abused by elitist music fanboys!

techno stuff
be more specific so I can argue with you :p
Half pop, half rap, half techno. One of the people I used to live with loved blaring that stuff at top volume all day, every day. I learned to just tune it out after awhile.

I wasn't talking about normal techno music, if that's what you were preparing to defend. I don't have anything against that, personally.
The smilie was a hint that I was being sarcastic and playing off my user name

I think the best source of muscial abuse has to be metal fans. I can say that I was a bit metalhead myself and as such i did inherit the uncanny lack of respect for any other genera of music because they were all GAY and metal was king. As a slightly more expansive person I can now enjoy the torrents of abuse that I get when I hang out in my local metal bar and tell people that I like listening to some ambient and dance music along with my favorite metal bands.

However one incident in particular sticks in my head. I was wearing a Megadeth T-shirt in the same bar and catching up with my friend Lisa, who I hadn't talked to in a few months, when some complete victim comes up and starts talking about how much of a wuss Dave Mustaine is and how James Hetfield is much cooler yada yada Metallica wank wank. Of course I attempt to make counter points a la "I couldn't give a toss what he's like, I enjoy the music and that's that really" but of course, Dave mustaine being a "wuss" negates all of my points forever apparently.
The way we got out of this conversation was classic though, my friend Lisa asks me if i wanna head out for a smoke, which he overhears and says "we'll continue this discussion outside". So me and my mate literally take two steps towards the exit and stop, while he bee-lines for the smoking area ahed of us thinking we're walking out with him. Leaving myself and my mate to kinda just say "aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway so we were talking about....."

Metal fans, forever an excellent source of humor.

I respect other people's music taste and if someone tries to argue with me, I say, "We've got different opinions, lets leave it at that."

I listen to a lot of glam/hair metal, so I'm not within any right to criticize anyone's choice of music. But it does make me a magnet for plenty of metalheads who like to berate the genre.

The problem is, there's just no appeasing these idiots. What they like is absolutely the best thing in the world and you're a loser for not liking the same thing. I'm personally inclined to agree with your statement, but like I said, you just can't reason with fanboys of ANYTHING, not just music.

I don't hang around or talk to anyone that elitist about their music, so no. If they did do that, I would likely walk away mid-rant without a word.

Oh, and to the OP: On Opeth, do you like their louder or softer songs more? I can only stand the latter, the former just sounds like generic metal to me. Just wondering if that's your opinion as well.
Their softer songs, even though they still sound mostly the same at least they are somewhat pleasant to listen to.

The only loud Opeth song I'll repeatedly listen to is Bleak and that's only for the clean verses sung by Steven Wilson

Sorry for bumping old thread
