I read 'Of Mice and Men' while the other class read 'Catcher in the rye'
You know, this is the only post I can really agree with.

I think it's a shame that he died, I'm glad that he lived as well. He had some very good ideas, and without him, we'd be down one awesome series of Ghost In The Shell.

Never heard of him but have been planning to read Catcher In The Rye, so that's a real shame to hear he's passed away.

Oh man. Why is it that the death of every celebrity the work of whom I enjoy is reported to me here? And he had to go and die just whe I'm reading The Catcher in the Rye for the third time, too.
Heh. I was watching The Breakfast Club when John Hughes died, so I understand the feeling. Had also just bought a Les Paul guitar when the Les Paul himself kicked the bucket, right on my birthday too. Weird, hm?
Someone is playing a sick joke on us. I learned to like George Carlin´s comedy just in time to hear about his death, and also Gary Gygax died conveniently when I was doing a little research about tabletop RPGs. Spooky, I say.
Alright, this is beyond spooky. GC had died the year before I learned about his comedy, and GG when I was looking at DnD online.
....I´m scared. Hold me.
Consider yourself held.

Fiddlesticks...all the cool people are dying one by one these days. I especially care now since I read Catcher and found it to be a good read and very thought-provoking, especially for it's time, and it was well-written. Anyone who disagrees with me also disagrees with Ernest Hemningway, who admitted "jesus, he has hella talent!"

Like it's somehow surprising that he died, because most people don't eventually?
I think it's more out of the fact that a great writer is now dead and incapable of producing any more works.

I think Salinger was a very skilled writer but somehow his books were pretty poor :\ Sort of like J. K. Rowling in reverse.

Well, I am reverent, and sad that we lost a man of literature. I didn't much care for Catcher, but it is a well renowned piece. And I will forever make fun of the "Ackley kid," and I will drink a scotch and soda in toast to Holden Calfield.

Will I get shot if I say I agree with this man?
No, because I agree too. I've never been that big a fan of his work. It's decent writing, it just doesn't really speak to me or my views on things.

we just started Catcher in my english class on tuesday and we were taking a test on the first two chapters when we herd about his passing, 12 minuets after it was annouced. we took it as a sign and stoped the test.

aperently he was still writing for the last twenty or so years, the ultament irony is if in his will he wanted to have a public funaral and be burned on a pyer of his unpublished masterpeices.

I had to read The Cather in the Rye for a school project.

I found it to be angsty and whiny actually.

Shame that he died though.
Same here. I disliked Catcher in the Rye (mostly because I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on). I heard a rumor that he wrote some stuff that was never published. Anyone know anything about that?

One of America's most renown novelists, J.D. Salinger, died today at the age of 91.

For those of you who don't know, Salinger was the writer of The Catcher in the Rye, a famous book you all probably were forced to read in High School. He also wrote one of my favorite books, Franny and Zooey. In my opinion, his death was a real shame.

Any thoughts? Reflections?

[small]Am I really the only one here who read Franny and Zooey?[/small]
I read Franny and Zooey. One of my favorite books. I just recently finished "13 Stories" and it had some really good ones in there.

We lost a great author and literature icon, but my friend made a good point. He had written about 15 works since he went all "Salinger" (into hiding, not seeing anybody for any reason), so the next few years should see the release of those works. Long live Salinger. And Holden Caulfield, Franny and Zooey, and all of his other beloved characters.

Thank God, I'm not the only one who thought so. It was terribly written in my opinion. He didn't really contribute that much to the literary world so I don't really see his death as any big loss.
I realize this is your opinion, but I will have to whole heartidly disagree. He created an interesting voice that wove a tale that tried to encompass the feelings of a generation which have transcended the almost 60 years it has been out.

On the movie topic, I'm glad it isn't being made into a movie. It would not live up to ANYONES expectations. Hopefully though, may America or the world gain a writer of equal calibur to at least try to archive the psyche of today.

Plus Catcher is infamously one of those books you either hate or love.

Everyone should read Catcher in the Rye when they're 12-13 years old. It gets the whole "everything/everyone is phony" rage out of the way so one can focus on more important things.

Salinger was also the worlds greatest recluse, seeing as nobody could ever find him. I'm surprised we found out so early.

I just started reading Catcher and i've liked it so far, his writing style is very unique and I'm very anxious to read Franny and Zooey.
Random Trivia Fact: As a student in college, Salinger told his classmates he would write
"the next american novel", and he succeeded.
