So I have a question: Who in the hell made Abrams an authority on this matter? He directed one film in the series. One. He's not even involved in any of the other films. So why are people regarding this loon as an authority on the merchandising arm of the company? It would be like grabbing some system operator at a bank and asking about investment opportunities.
Mostly because it gives some people justification to get up in arms over something incredibly minor because without it they know that their incredibly boring character they love so much and are heaping so much praise on is largely the most unpopular(maybe just least popular) thing in the new movie.
Now, I'm going to say that I haven't seen it, and I probably won't until it comes out of theaters, but considering the comparisons being made are other main women characters that are largely the least interesting ones in the story they appear in, I'm just going to guess it's much the same with Rey. Largely overhyped, over-praised, and incredibly under-used in the actual narrative(from what I've heard, maybe she'll get her ass handed to her and she'll actually have to try in the next movie or two).
Yeah, you maybe shouldn't comment on a character you haven't seen yet, because she's great. She's not the best character ever, but she's in no way underused or anything. She gets her ass beat, but beats right back, if it weren't for the ground splitting she would have killed Kylo Ren. She's what Luke would have been in a New Hope, had be grown up on the streets left to fend for himself before the plot started.
So basically pretty much what people are largely complaining about her? They've built up Ren so much that "the ground splitting open" is the only thing that makes her on the level of the villain they've been hyping up for the better part of two years? You don't see how that's a bit of a problem when they've got two more movies? They're gonna have to pull some serious writer-fu to establish Ren as a threat considering that or come up with a completely new villain that can replace him that isn't just a cardboard cut-out. Or at least give me a damn good reason why Rey can do so much shit perfectly on the first try.
And again, I'm basing this on people comparing her to other over-hyped women characters of the last few years more than anything else, Jessica Jones is good, but it's not because of Ritter despite her taking up something like 80% of the screentime. Furiosa's ok, but I'm honestly still more interested in Max because he's sorta been one of those things my family brought me up on, yet everyone is fixated on her and the flamethrower guitar that largely just felt out of place in the world. Sky in Shield having her power level and control bounce back and forth as the plot demands it instead of having something somewhat consistent when they've done so well with all the other characters.
The characters are ok, but are MASSIVELY overy-praised for what they do compared to alot of other female characters that aren't directly connected to a geek franchise therefore are barely watched by alot of the people on these forums except to sneer at.
No.
She was established right from the start to be a capable fighter, she gets jumped by a gang and by the time Fin got anywhere close enough she had already dispatched of them.
She doesn't get the force stuff right the first try, there is an entire cool and hilarious scene in which she tries to get the Jedi Mind Trick right, failing the first couple times. Her first instances of using the force are all accidental and more like automatic reactions, kinda how a talented person might learn of their talent.
The endfight with Kylo Ren, after Kylo Ren kills Han Solo, Chewbacca goes mental and starts shooting, one of his shots hits Ren in the stomach. Before this the movie reminds everyone of hiw powerful his bowcaster is.
Ren is severely wounded before he fights Rey. When Rey first uses the lightsaber she first fights with it as if it was her staff but changes her style after noticing that that's not the right way ti use it.
That's why she's a great character, she's capable and grows on screen, we actually get to see her potential.
