SO i'm gonna go with the obvious joke here and ask...."does that mean half life and portal are going to be remade with lens flares?"

"J. J. Abrams takes over Valve"

And this is what we call 'misleading'.

Please don't use a title like this unless Valve's stock gets bought out, the current title is very misleading.
And that in and of itself would require a headline announcing that they'd put themselves on the stock market.

I don't really get why everyone goes on and on about the lens flare thing... wasn't that just ONE movie he did?

It's like all the mediocrity in the universe is converging into a single point.

Video game movies can be good:

Then again, that franchise isn't very good anymore. I'm still going to classify this news as: skeptically optimistic.

Interactive mediums trying to translate back to non-interactive ones seem to be a step backwards. When a player plays as a lone nerd clutching a crowbar, they get to decide whether Gordon Freeman is shocked, confused, and terrified because of the horrors of invasion and the proof of alien life (and that it and his own government is hostile to him) or elated because he now has squishy things on which to take out his frustrations from MIT a la Freeman's Mind. Being told we're humanity's savior can be uplifting or morbidly hilarious depending on our own personal context, something we lose when we're watching a character rather than controlling them.

I'm pretty surprised Valve would even talk to a director about movies, ok they obviously never done a full length feature but I always figured they were one of those companies that had to have things go their way, and only their way. So to bring in someone who wouldn't think like they do(especially since his mind is busy with so many other things) is borderline shocking.

Since when did collaborating suddenly mean taking over? They're working together on a few projects. If it's a flop, then it's a freaking flop, it's not the end of the world.

Wow, someone is mad.

JJ Abrams is actually one of the few competent action-movie directors active today, a thing that's actually very rare.
Oh yes, Star Trek 2009 was a perfectly decent a from orbit at breakneck at pace.

He has no respect for the source material which is a very bad thing if you're adapting something as unique as Star Trek, Star Wars and various Valve IPs.

I'm sure Star Wars 7 will be a perfectly decent action movie too.

Like Revenge of the Sith.

So what you're telling me is that there will be an Ep 3, but it will be incredibly anti-climatic and end with all the Half life Characters in a church?
No, they'll just have Zen sucked into a black hole, and give the G-man a nonsensical backstory (something to do with a dead wife, and waiting 20 years in a parallel dimension) to explain why he's a baddie.

:p

Well, he's not Scorcese but he managed to take and old and stale Science Fiction series and turn it into an enjoyable action movie.
By destroying over 40 years of established lore and completely disregarding the themes and tone of said "stale" series.
The last decade of which was pretty awful, which is why they did a reboot. There wasn't a "good" star trek movie since Nemesis(which is another action heavy flick) and let's face it, both Voyager and Enterprise had great premises but awful, awful executions.

If it took crazy time travel, a new timeline and a lot of lens flare to make star trek watchable again, so be it.
