... and this time it's staying with it's roots; Turn Based all the way!

After 14 years of waiting finally a true turn-base succesor to Jagged Alliance 2!

Check the Kickstarter and their website for more info.

//Introduction

The Godfather of turn-based action is making its comeback! Experience first hand the events that lead to the founding of A.I.M.

Jagged Alliance: Flashback is our vision of returning a once critically acclaimed franchise back to its roots, it's not a reboot, it's a reset!

Our main goal is to bring back the tactical turn-based action that the original Jagged Alliance games are known for - the game was a thinking man's game, a thinking man with lots of guns!

The games were unique in their blend of tactical turn-based action, controlling and maintaining squads of mercenaries, off and on the battlefield. As a player the decisions you made had a direct impact on how you played the game.

Additionally, over-the-top personalities, memorable characters and role-playing elements made the games difficult to put away once you were hooked.

//FAQ

Q: When will the game be released?

A: With our current budget we plan to release the game late 2014, but if we get more funding we would like to implement more features, which could potentially delay the release.

Q: What does it mean that you have a Jagged Alliance License?

A: Getting a license is purely a legal agreement of "Yes - you are allowed to use Jagged Alliance to make a game". It does NOT include money to make the game. It also means we are in Full Control of the development (pun intended).

Q: Will there be a MULTIPLAYER section of the game?

A: Jagged Alliance: Flashback is designed to be the best single player story driven experience possible. While we will not rule out a potential multiplayer mode in the far future, it is not on the roadmap or feature lists.

Q: Do I have to be online to play?

A: No, we don't roll like that. We want you to be able to enjoy a game of Jagged Alliance: Flashback anywhere at anytime.

Q: Will there be mod support?

A: Support for modding is important for a Jagged Alliance title. Depending on the final budget we will work on opening up for things like a map editor and dialog editor.

Q: What's your primary target platform?

A: Our primary platform will be PC. The game will be available on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

Q: Will the game support multiple languages?

A: Yes, the game will support English, French, German,Italian, Russian and Spanish, but only for text and menus.

I hope there are some fans of the old series around here that are willing to support this effort.
So as one fan to another please support the kickstarter.

I hope we can make this game a reality and show that the genre is not dead!

I posted about this about a week ago, I think I got maybe 3 views. I suspect the originals weren't played by many people on this forum, and most probably remember it from the ghastly modern remake.

I'm certainly excited about this, but I'm a little worried at the sluggish pace of the Kickstarter thus far.

Well if we keep bringing it up. Then perhaps we can get a bit more supporters... And we FC have made a few updates since then...

And good to see another fan here that hated In Action :)

Back in Action is an atrocity that does not deserve to bear the Jagged Alliance name. Jagged Alliance 2 is arguably the finest turn based tactical game ever made (it can wrestle for the honor with the original XCOM).

Alas, very few people here have played it. I tried to get Tippy to play it but he pronounced it too old and slow for his modern tastes. I threw my copy of M.U.L.E. at him.

No game has managed to replace JA2 for over a decade, so I'm sceptical.

The devs will need to spell out exactly how they will try to improve upon the original before they get my support. Graphics won't win me over because JA2 already looks fine to me, so it all comes down to gameplay mechanics.

I agree but in 14 years these are the first developers who seem to know how they need to tackle it.
They are on JA2 1.13 mod forum speaking to the modders about having them help to make the modding tools.

Well they keep posting updates either on Kickstarter or on their facebook page. I can only ask you to keep an eye on them and if you feel they are going in the right direction to show your support. :)

JA2, due to genre, has aged better than some games, but this is a pretty dubious claim. With the 1.13 mod you can get it up to a roaring 1024 x 768, which would have been "acceptable" 7-8 years ago. The UI is also quite messy and could use slicking up.

If it was nothing more than JA2 repackaged with 1920x1080 resolution support, a cleaner UI and relatively modern textures I'd drop $60 on it in a heartbeat.

I agree to bad that the community could only do so much. Though I think JA2 at 1920x1080 would make your merc so tiny it be hard to see them on the map... XD

I could play it then, so I can still play it now. I like pretty visuals, but I'm no graphics whore. JA2 is very easy on the eyes compared to UFO:EU and I still occasionally play that one too.
Should graphics be the only improvement, then I'd just stick with the old game.

There's still 27 days to go. I'll wait and see what they'll come up with.

I took a look at In Action...

...Then I saw it was a Kalypso game. They're like 1C Company, but WORSE. If you think what they did to Jagged Alliance was bad, I think the Disciples Series wants to join the tent with you.

So far considering the Kickstarter, but already pledging on other things right now.

I always thought I'd be able to get into JA2 but it was so old and clunky and it just felt like shit so I'll keep an eye on this. Doubt I'll pledge to it since I'm not certain about it yet, but I'll certainly be keeping a lookout.

I liked Jagged Alliance, but UFO: Enemy Unknown (AKA X-COM) was first, and I still consider it to be the Godfather of TBS games.

You threw that at me but you had accuracy like the JA2 guys in my squad so it went the opposite direction! :p

I'll have to keep an eye on this. As our onion-avatared friend has stated, I gave JA2 a try a few months ago at his recommendation and just couldn't get into it. It felt...well....old. That's obviously not the games fault but Tactic games have evolved considerably since 1999(?) and I was just getting frustrated with the game.

People are able to move about five feet per turn so all of my fights went one of two ways:

A. A Revolutionary War style battle. My guys lined up on one side of the field and their guys lined up on the other.
My Team: READY! AIM! FIRE!
Their Team: READY! AIM! FIRE!
My Team: READY! AIM! FIRE! Hey! One of my bullets accidentally went and hit the enemy!
and so on...

B. We sit back behind cover and wait for the enemy to charge into our gunfire. 9/10 they obliged us.

Maybe had I given it more time (I played about four hours) it would have gotten better but I just got bored with it. I'm sure there was a deep and satisfying game in there somewhere but I didn't have the knowledge/patience to wait for it.

You lot think Back in Action was bad? Any of you ever played Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge?

Truth be told, I don't think Back in Action would have been that bad if it weren't for the way Militia worked.

Just keep an eye on it please. As long as it reaches at least 350K by the end I'll be able to die happy!

That is one of the problems of JA2. It throws you into the deep end without second thought. FC is going to make a tutorial in this one to ease new players in. :p

I have played it. But the real problem with "in action" were the developers attitude towards the previous games. They didn't add a single thing. Actually then only removed features and that pissed most of the fans off.

If it's in desperate need I'll consider it. Currently, it's set to "Remind Me" on my KS Page. It is however conflicting with a few other KS projects right now.

Also, Kalypso is a terrible company, how they got the JA license in the first place is beyond me X3

Well Bitcomposer holds the license and I think they thought they could squeeze a quick buck out of an old IP.

This is a point though that irks me greatly. Kalypso got a budget to screw around but when a studio has some good ideas it needs to use a kickstarter... -Grrrrr-
