Ugh, another example of why I hate Japanese society. This is yet another facet of the sexist mindset that sex is an activity to be enjoyed by the man only, and that a woman "gives" her body to the man as some selfless sacrifice. No wonder that their society is so sexually repressed, if it refuses to admit that sex is a mutual partnership rather than a one-sided act. It's times like this that make me think that the US isn't really that bad after all.
My wife is Japanese, and she hasn't "given" her body to me in quite some time. I call foul.

Worgen said:
Its hardly all of japan that is like that, really most societies have a view of women that is they are beneath a man, hell, even after the sexual revolution women are still struggling to get equal rights and they still regularly earn less then men, feminist is practically a 4 letter word since conservatives have done such a good job of demonizing it. Plus its not reasonable people that get assigned to things like this, its the more conservative and weird elements that get put on things like this.
I can't speak for everyone, but from my perspective, feminism has gotten its current bad name from the outspoken, hardcore, man-hating, feminazi bitches that we keep hearing about. Never run into one myself, so I have a feeling they aren't as common as the internet makes them seem. Classic feminism notion of equality? All for it, as long as it's really equality that they want.
Actually the manhating feminazi bitches tend to mostly be an invention of said rightwing groups as a way to turn the word feminist into a 4 letter one, really your just falling for it, if there is one thing the right is really good at re-defining words.

I honestly haven't seen something that out-of-touch in a very long time. I think the last thing I saw was that horrible Rick Perry ad that popped up awhile back. Oi vey.
You forgot Rick Santorum who got booed off stage for calling gay marriage equal to polygamy. >.<

Oh, great now the Japanese gov are getting in on the managa and anime hating act. If you are a fan of this medium, you already run the risk of being labeled a deviant (if not worse), as all managa is about school girls being raped, right. Now you also run the risk of being labeled as gay as well, for liking the non rape, women in charge depictions.

When are people going to get this through their heads. They are drawings, they are not real, they are not going to convert someone into something they you are not already. So placing restrictions on them for 'public safety' is just wrong. In the same way that killing loads of people in video games is not going to turn you into a murder, unless you were one already. But of course people always have a different 'logic' when it comes to things involving sex rather than violence.

As far as what it says about Japan. I think it just says that the old, misogynistic and in Government men there, have some issues with / fear of strong women who are comfortable with expressing themselves sexually (my favorite kind, btw). That says more about the people in government in Japan rather than managa.

Can't wait for the people who have grown up with Managa to get into power.

Back in 2010 Tokyo signed into law a bill [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106174-Child-Safety-Bill-Could-Cripple-Anime-Industry] that allows the government to censor, via a committee vote, media that "promotes illegal or immoral sexual activity."
Corrected it for you. The statute only applies to Tokyo, as it was passed by the local Tokyo government.

I think they are confusing sexual submissiveness with homosexuality, even though uke and seme exist in both heterosexual and homosexual (both gender versions) hentai.

*sigh* Japan, calm down will you?

This is from the country whose citizens read porn on the train and came up with the words "yaoi" and "yuri" and the entire subculture therein?

I am always amazed at how inconsistent Japan is with their culture.

To quote one of dozens of similar comments:

"Why is Japan doing this??"

JAPAN is not doing this. A GUY is doing this. Granted this guy is a product of Japanese culture. But so are 127 million other Japanese people, each of whom is a person with his or her own personality, none of which are precisely identical despite the stereotype.

"JAPAN" is not some monolithic hive-mind. There's one guy in Miyazaki Prefecture (a tiny, mostly rural "state" tucked away in the far south of Japan...the size and population of a couple of American counties) who thinks this way. There are probably a few million others who have similar ridiculous opinions, but most Japanese people would find his views as appalling as most of us do.

And how many millions of Americans think that homosexuality is caused by dominant women? How many Canadians? Dave Sim, the writer of Cerberus, one of the greatest comic books ever, thinks so. Most North Americans who've read his wacky views rightfully think he's a nutcase. Do they say, "Why is Canada doing this??" No. They think, "Why did such a great comic creator turn into such a homophobic, misogynistic creep?"

Why is a Canadian or an American opinion an individual's opinion, but a minor Japanese functionary's opinion is suddenly JAPAN's opinion?

And for the several people who wrote variations on "This is why I hate Japan": Stop being idiots. I could understand such a sentiment if you were, say, Japanese and complaining about your own culture, or if you were Chinese or Korean and your country had been invaded and terribly harmed by Japan, or if you were an 80-year-old Pacific War vet. But even those people should get the hell over it. Americans should remember that Japan is one of America's closest and most loyal allies. It is far from a perfect country, and it has crimes to answer for in its history...but name me a country that is perfect. Name me a country that is free from an ugly past.
No kidding, this article quickly turned into a reason for every shithead to vent some really disturbing bigotry towards Japan. This kinda stuff makes me feel like we're back in the 40s with every non-Asian getting dangerously close to saying "them squinty-eyed Japs."

Can I just say "Oh, Japan...", because that's all that needs to be said.

(Not that we're any better, but I'll put money on it that Japan has a "Oh, England" column as well)
You are completely right. Japan has in now way cornered the market on illogical laws on material of a sexual nature.

In the UK you can go out and pick up a 16 years old and do with them, whatever they will consent to. If you have a drawing of a 16 year old doing what you could have legally done with a real 16 year old, that's it you are put on a register. Also if you download media of the 16 year old, that is classed under UK law as 'making' indecent / prohibited media. That is not in anyway misleading, making out like you created it.

Or that porn for 16 year olds is illegal, but having sex with real women is not. Isn't that a bit like getting people to learn to drive when they have never seen a car before. Which country had the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe again, oh yeah right...

In the UK it is also now illegal to have media of acts of extreme S&M. That is unless you can prove you were there to witness the act when it was recorded. That's right the act it's self is not illegal, just any media products from it unless you were there to witness it with your own eyes.

Also a big no no is any sexual activity with animals and depictions there of, because obviously it is cruel to the animal and they cannot consent (and yuck). Never mind that we kill millions of them a year to feed us (yes, I'm a vegetarian). It does not strike anyone as inconsistent that it is OK to show depictions of animals being killed, mutilated or any other indignity, by humans, but anything sexual.... If I was an animal I know which I would pick, between death and rape.

I find all the above as yucky as anyone else (so not interested in picking up 16 year olds thank you), but that does not mean the illogic to the above legislation should not be pointed out. People tend to legislate from the gut rather than the head, when it comes to anything involving sex. So as I said before Japan in no way has the market cornered when it comes to illogic and crazy when it comes to legislating on this issue. There is plenty of finger pointing to go around.

If you ask me feminism has gotten it's current bad name because the name itself should be changed at this point. It should be something that actually looks like it supports rights for both genders. As the amazing atheist said : (I'm paraphrasing a bit, and I thought the same thing before the video came out), 'saying you're going to call your group feminists but you'll advocate for men's rights when relevant is like saying white power but you'll fight for black rights when relevant. ' Even if you're telling the truth, there has to be some label that actually works and doesn't look like you're going to favor one side as a favorite.

Wow, Japan has a bible belt?

OT: I love the fear of older generations. When will they understand that people who are gay/lesbian are not confused. At first they are, but the first time I was ever interested in a girl and she was interested back, I could barely function in their presence. Talk about confused.

"OH NO! This comic will turn my kid GAY! NOOOOOO!"

We could really mess with them and tell them it was their bad parenting that caused that outcome, then who would be confused.

Well, on an even more outdated wavelength, the mayor of Michigan made a comment about "faggots" now being able to get married in New York recently, and then proceeded to refer to being gay as a mental disorder.

But hey, we're only 11 years and 11 days into the 21st Century!

OT: Well, I guess that's a form of logic. As in, the retarded kind.

As much as I dislike people who only quote someone to say 'This'... well, THIS!

A comment in the minutes of a meeting by one individual does not a country/culture make. To think that there is no one of pretty much every other culture that thinks something as assinine as this is just laughable

......

WTF?!?!!!!! BOOOOOOM

or as a gamer would put it: lolw00t?

now, it'd be interesting to know if this is just a single person's opinion (judging from japanese films, tv-shows, animes and mangas (not, not talking yugioh here) one has to fear it's not...) or a more or less general consensus.

but
that explains live-action tentacle porn. and the kawaiiii shouts (& inmaturity/helplessness/submission expected from and shown by "women" and girls) one has to bear in certain circles.
yeah sure, women with something like a self-consciousness and -confidence must turn men down first, gay second.

i lol'd ^^
