Usually sob stories don't get to me, but this one hit me. Don't think I'd handle getting a call like that from my dad...

I know me saying I'm sorry for everyone involved on some forum doesn't do anything to help, but my thoughts are with them either way.
i think dying to prevent a nuclear disaster that will affect thousands isn't that bad of a way to die. not that its not sad that it has come to this, but we need to be thankful that people like this exist to sacrifice themselves for the good of pretty much everyone else they know.

Wow these men have given more in a short amount of time than most do in their life.
Also what is it with Japanese people and always having disasters related to radiation.

This is like the ending of Fallout 3 except with an actual emotional impact. Those men are the definition of hero.

Jeez, that is incredible. These people are hero's and I don't mean, some people might see them as villains but their homeland sees them as the good guys but they are sacrificing their lives for others survival. That is beautiful, but with Japans culture of sacrifice it doesn't surprise me but it makes me think, who here on the escapist would sacrifice themselves in such a way for the greater survival.

I know I couldn't do it, and I have nothing but absolute respect and admiration for these people and sympathy for the families.

If any culture on this world has a sense of discipline and selfsacrifice, it's the japanese.
That's the one, They are similar to the Chinese in this way, It is not an insult but a compliment to say that they have no god. They are going to take over the world pretty quickly with that kind of dedication.

Wow, that's courageous.
A few days ago, as far as I remember anyway, that airhead Kelly Ripa was going on about how the Japanese "weren't talking about these men like heroes" and how "it's just their culture" (paraphrased)
Bull. Ask anyone on the street about these guys and they'll call them heroes just fine.
Really outdated views about the East? On MY major American TV network? Surely you jest!
I don't know why, maybe it's all the human tragedy, but it irks me when people apply their misconceptions about the country when it comes to talking about the current crisis.

If I remember my history lessons correctly they do have a religion, but it's based on a very different perspective. As far as I know they treat the Emperor as a god. But I'm not up to speed on religion in japan x.x

All I know is that they have a real high sense of discipline and dedication to their country. And yes they will take over the world :V

In short, this thread is a memorial to the brave souls that have volunteered to die to save their country and loved ones.
Not just their country. A nuclear catastrophe could affect the whole world...
The blast from these reactors would be far less than that of a certain nuclear power station in Ukraine. The blast at Chernobyl's radioactive cloud reached huge heights due to the fact the whole station was falling apart and the large useage of graphite which caught on fire.
Whereas the stations in Japan are far more contained for example yes radiation from the stations has reached the USA but the levels are well below dangerous levels and in fact many every items give off more radiation.

Don't mean to take anything away from what these guys are doing; I just don't like people getting the facts wrong.

Gods in Shinto aren't gods per se, they are incarnations of the Buddha that lead people towards enlightenment, one of them, Jizo, being there specifically to save the dead from the rebirth cycle or even one of the many forms of hell. The Emperor is believed to be a descendant of one of these gods (I believe Amaterasu) but he is not a god himself. If the beliefs seem a little all over the place it's because Shintoism was really a mixture of old Japanese religious ideas that were made to accommodate Buddhism (which happens in every religion, ie: lent), also it wasn't even that rigidly defined until much later on. From personal experiences, it seems as if they don't take it as seriously as many christians take their religion, but that of course is totally subjective and speculative.

In a way I envy them, having the courage to do something like that. When this incident calms down - and it will with brave people like this out there - they better be remembered, by all of Japan, by all of the world

I really can't add anything to what has already been said here, so good luck and godspeed to all of them. They are heroes in the truest sense of the word.

Good for them; that must have been one of the most difficult choices they'd have ever needed to make.

As cowardly as it sounds, I hope I never have to make that choice.

i bet that just about any culture would get people for that task i mean look at ship wrecks if there is even a chance that the lifeboat wont be able to hold the nesessary numbers people will automatically comform to standards in that situaton to make sure that familys get off together if possible and if not then women and children.

Well yes of course there would be other cultures who would do the same.
I don't see why everyone trips over the statement I made =/

All I said was that I only know of one culture who is like that.
