hmm, as i see it, since a aartoon in't real, or alive, then it has no rights. and so consent is not needed for the marriage.
True, the cartoon itself has no rights because she's not real, but the studio who owns the rights to her do. I wonder though, if this passes (God forbid) will the studio still be able to use her in their cartoon? And what of the voice actor, I wonder what she thinks of all this?

The article doesn't specify which character, but the picture is of Ichigo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichigo_Momomiya#Ichigo_Momomiya] from Tokyo Mew Mew. A character who is, as I recall, 11 years old.

Creeeeepyyyyyy.

I support this guy whole-heartedly, mostly for the amusement factor.

I don't think that's the character he wants to marry. There are a number of articules about this on the net and none of them specify which character he's in love with. It's probably just that they wanted to give an example of what a cute anime girl looked like.

But thinking about it, does the fact the girl is 11 matter?... I mean underage marriage is illegal and for good reason but does a cartoon need to be of adult age? How do you judge a cartoons age? How old she was designed to be or how long ago she was first drawn; which decides a cartoons age?

How old she was designed to be of course. Of course it matters, underage marriage is illegal. If you change that for cartoons you set a precedent for other crazy cases of ignoring the age limit on marriage which, with snowballing, could corrupt the entirety of the world.

The world!

Well its still kinda weird lusting after a cartoon representation of a little girl isn't it? If I met someone who told me that they're horny for a cartoon of a kid I'd be really creeped out.

From what I've seen on the net, many anime characters are available as blowup dolls, so maybe he'll buy one that looks like the character and marry that.

it must be strange for the actor indeed.
As for rights, the studio should not have the right here. They should still be allowed to use the character in the cartoon of course, because they own the image.
howevre, refusing to let the character marry is treating the character like a slave, and so the studio becomes the parent who is against the marriage, but no one gives a damn.

however, i feel i should point out that this is completely insane.

*adds this article to file labeled "Why we should burn all traces of Japanese culture"*

I'm starting to think that the atomic bombs may be to blame for this. Only heavy doses of radiation could produce a culture as fucked up as Japan.

Androids that are almost life-like. If there were such a thing as they portray in the series, then I can completely understand why someone would want to make marrying human created woman legal. However, that isn't what this man wants to do.
dose this remind anyone else of that futurerma episode when fry starts dating the robot girl from the internet?

I think the fact the guy is lusting after a cartoon to begin with is creepy. But undoubtibly the issue of age will come into play if this is going to be taken seriously by the government.

Considering how many people on this site alone are confessed fans of hentai, it's not too weird to be lusting after cartoons. Creepy for you perhaps, but it's obviously not that rare a thing even outside of Japan.

Just check how much traffic the 4chan Ecchi, Hentai, Yuri and Yaoi boards get.

Haha good point, but it should be noted that in Hentai the cartoons are designed to be erotic. As far we know, this guy is in love with a cartoon, he doesn't just lust after her. I suppose then that the creepy thing about this isn't the fact he's turned on by a cartoon, just how far he's going to actually have his "love" recognised for this character.

"Everyone against this are all bigoted, small minded, religious prudes who are obstructing the true love of this man. If it's an inanimate object, then he can't hurt anyone by marrying it. It makes me sick that anyone would ever want to obstruct the true love of this HUMAN. It can't do anybody any harm if he wants to marry - he can't have kids or anything or share financial accounts and other points of legality. It'd only be that he wants to be MARRIED to it - the ONLY expression of real love."

Attention people, this is the future. I can't see why you wouldn't use the same logic applied to a "no" for Prop 8 to be a "yes" to this guys proclivities. In the future, we'll have people arguing his cause. And when you vote "no" for his marriage, your children will be the ones on internet forums yelling at Christians and anyone conservative (you) who voted no.

So if a guy wants to marry a cartoon character from a cartoon which was created in 2006, does that make him a nonce, because he wants to marry a 2 year old bride?

Or if the fictitious age of the character is the defining age, not the age of the cartoon, would guys be able to marry 12 year old cartoon characters?

Also what about gay guys wanting to marry male cartoon characters? Is gay marriage legal in Japan? If it's not would allowing a man to marry a male cartoon character be unfair to real gay couples who aren't allowed to marry?
