Slapping of the face IS a bit excessive, but not that far off from the punishments I got at school as a kid which includes the yard stick (either to the hand or the buttocks. The former hurts like hell). But hey, we grew up to be a disclipined bunch. What does detention ever do except induce boredom? Does writing "I will treat a textbook with respect" (or something like that) ever got into a student's brain?
No, but I really do think that dean's need a different way of dealing with high school students, cracking one upside the head is really stupid, we have a tendency to fight back.

Well, the students should have followed the rules.

Should they have been beaten? No, but they should have been punished.

I think corporal punishment is just fine. I tprobably works better than a time out.
With you here, as long as you are restrained with it. Liberal as I am I don't see a problem with teachers using light slapping and knocking on students. Caning would be going a bit too far, but this is nothing.

Hahaha! Good job!

He didn't seriously hurt them, so what's the problem?

You used to see this sort of thing in the States, only the teachers had paddles or canes. And they could whip your ass if you acted up.

w hear what the paper tells us. maybe those kids were being obnoxious little snots to the edge of sanity. Granted child abuse isn't the best way to go, but discipline sometimes needs to be served.

At least he didn't Beat them to death. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.128928]

I don't really see what the problem is, if he had seriously hit them, or done something more insidious. But that kind of open direct, mild punishment is just the right type of thing to make younger kids remember the rules.

He's 41 and slapped 41 students? quite the coincidence. He went way over board but kids do need to be taught a lesson sometimes.

yea its usually in the form of ISS (In School suspension) S (Suspension) GLD (Grade Level Drop) or any other neato little acronyms they can come up with.

Its frowned upon in pretty much every crevice on the planet except for the Middle East and China

Maybe that is why the American education system is such a joke. Bring back corporal punishment! It gets shit done.

How is that an example?

What an idiot. This reminds me of when I was in middle school, in my gym class a couple kids were goofing off and the teacher got so mad he gave everyone detention. A couple days later we heard that the punishment had been canceled and the teacher would not be teaching that class anymore.

Overreaction much? "Oh no! They ate snacks when I told them not to! The world is falling into disarray! I need to correct this!!!!!!!" Really?

Meh, none of the kids were really hurt though. The teacher needs a small reprimand and we'll all be done with this. Probably partially the kids' faults too. Is it really that hard to resist eating a snack when you're already getting them from the teachers?

I think "slap" is the keyword here. If the teacher had slapped them like a pimp slaps his whore, then there'd obviously be a problem. A light tap, on the other hand, I don't really see a problem with. Little kids can have awfully thick skulls after all, can't they? It's hard to get through to them, and sometimes I think a little spank is all that will get through to them...

Cool, an excuse to slap 41 kids.

But, really, it's more of a social thing. Japanese culture is very heavily into social codependency, it's a vital pillar of their society. These young kids were exhibiting individual behavior, and at that point this teacher had a problem -- they needed to be brought back into the fold, and quick. Fortunately, this was a problem conveniently answered by socially fostered "loss of cool." This resulted in a "reprimand" that was probably more to smooth things over.

Isn't culture shock grand? Granted, the culture is attempting to embrace individuality more in recent years, but you can be sure there is a great deal of holding out going on.

Sorry, excuse the brainwash chip.

In all seriousness though, this isn't that bad. Not like anyone died, or anything. I think all this teacher needs is to be disciplined.
Wait, what?

He assaulted eleven year olds. 41 of them. And he just needs a slap on the wrist? If he murdered and raped their bloody corpses, could they fire him then?
