They've committed crimes so heinous that the suitable punishment is death. Why is this an issue?

They shouldn't kill them, they should let scientists do tests on them so they can better understand the effects of isolation on the human mind.
After my years of research of keeping a cat in a closet. I learned that it makes the cat really really angry. This information will benefit everyone in the future, for example, if you want to keep a cat in the closet for years, don't do it.

The way I see it, if you're put on death row then the death isn't the punishment, it's the waiting for it and accepting the consequences of your actions. I say they're getting what they deserve.

Death row [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8247319.stm]

So are these conditions cruel? Does it really matter if you are killing them anyway? Why are executions taking up to 40 years to be carried out?

Your thoughts.
Having formerly (and sometimes still) worked in corrections I can say that's outragously overboard. How do you expect someone to not cause you any problems in that situation? What leverage do you have against them? Isolation is used as a punishment of those who break the rules within the faciliity. Not just because.

By doing this you put your officers in danger or what if they are granted release? Now what do they do? Go to an asylum.

There is a reason I can sit in a mod with 60 violent individuals and not get the shit kicked out of me (like I am RIGHT NOW) it's cause I talk to them and treat them like people. Even though they don't deserve it.
I thought jailer was your old job...? Well say hi to the mean people for me.

Nawww poor death row inmates aren't being treated properly. They would have a right to complain were these people not some of the most treacherous people on earth.
Even the ones who are innocent of the accusations against them but they still sit on death row?

No legal system is perfect you know, and a society with a legal system that advocates the death penalty is a society of murderers.

Sure, the police system might not investigate cases of executed felons and actively turn deaf ears and blind eyes towards the possibility of that society having executed innocent people. But innocent people have most certainly been executed for crimes they didn't commit.

That's the problem with the death sentence. It's not like you can just let the accused out from the cell and tell them you're sorry for the mistake. Once you're dead, you're dead, and the blood of the innocent will stain EVERY CITIZEN's hands in that society forever.

Is it worth the state killing of innocent people only to be able to get the real criminals as well? Does the ends justify the means and the consequences of those means?

Life imprisonment is one thing. At least then the court offers the benefit of a doubt and acknowledge the fact that the legal system isn't and can't be perfect, but it's doing the best it can, and that you offer the chance to set an innocent man free if proof arise afterwards that a mistake has been made.

Killing them can only mean one thing, and that is naive behaviour. It means that the court believes that it is flawless...

Well, my guess is if they did something to earn a death scentence, they deserve it.
With you all the way Housebroken Lunatic. Innocents get arrested, they get charged, they get convicted. In countries with the death penalty they get murdered by the state. That's why capital punishment is utterly unforgivable.
By the way tellmeimaninja, look up any of the following: Ron Williamson, the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four, Colin Ross, Derek Bentley, Robert Green, Adolph Beck, Sally Clark, Angela Cannings...
The list of miscarriages of justice is huge. Conviction does not mean a person did anything, and certainly doesn't mean they did anything to deserve the disgusting treatment in Japan. Also, being driven insane is not part of the sentence. The sentence is imprisonment until death, and not torture in the meantime.

Hey, it's not like the Japs havent done far far worse things to people.
This is what I was thinking and I can't say I'm surprised Japan is doing something like this.

Should we stop them? That remains to be seen as I don't know what these particular criminals did, but driving them into insanity and then killing them seems pretty merciful to me as they'd want death at that point. But you can easily twist it that they suffered until their execution date as well, so I'm on the fence with this one.

I can neither support or decry what is happening there.
cant find better words than this I guess, though it seems they should have a bit more rights like a book to read or something

the only good point about the death penalty is that it resulted in the film the green mile, otherwise its completely wrong no man or person should ever be killed

I've never understood the whole Death Row thing. When you sentence someone to death, why not kill them right there on the spot? I know the whole appeal process blah blah, but honestly, having to wait 20+ years is a little ridiculous, and I would say borderline cruel. Not that they don't deserve it for what they've done, but still...

What's the point in having a 'death row', it prolongs the inevitable. Take em out and kill them as fast as you can, it's more humane. That or give them one day, a last meal and time to see any family or whatever. This great waiting around for a decade and half thing? That's bullshit. It wastes money and time and is bloody inefficient.

And the fucking japanese are crazy. if you put a guy in a cell with room enough to walk around in, why then deprive the poor bastard of the right to walk!? But this comming from a country reknowned for it's rather... questionable treatment of people over the years, is not all that hard to believe. As I'm sure others have said - they've done a hell of a lot worse. Ha! And this a culture that people love? It's laughable how a little gloss can cover up so much shit.

Hell, kill the inmates, the wankers that thought it up, and possibly the guards. Slaughter the whole fucking lot of them.

The thing is, Death Row is there for a reason.
The people sent there are some of the most despicable creatures on earth, who have, by their own choice, and usually their sick scheming, decided to take the life of a human being. You're telling me that a creature who sexually assaults members of a family, and then executes the whole family should be treated with dignity and respect, and be shown kindness and empathy?

Tell me this, then; where's the kindness towards the victims?

The day I start opposing the death sentence for these pieces of shit, is when there is no death sentence for the victims. And if they suffer while they're in there, and go crazy because of the 'inhumane' living conditions? All the better. They lost their humanity a long time ago.

I'm always suprised so many people are so absolute in their belief. 'Kill 'em! Death! Death!!!'

Rather than death row, how about work houses? And the money would go into cutting taxes, of course. Giving something back, I call it.

I wonder if those death row inmates took all that time to contemplate their crimes, and whether or not they actually deserve this "human rights" Amnesty International speaks of. Those big ol' bleeding heart softies...Still, I can't ignore their previous achievements.

They're in DEATH ROW.
Not only does the name suggest harsh conditions, but if they're in there they definitley did something to deserve it.

Although to be honest they shouldn't be kept around for decades, atleast execute them sooner. Saves money and time for the tax payer/prison system/government
What if they're innocent? They usually wait 10-20 years or so before execution, in case new evidence appears, to make sure they're the right person.
That's the whole flaw with Western legal systems. Everyone is innocent until proven absolutely, without any doubt, guilty. The problem is that prisons happen to be full of people who claim to be innocent, which is why nothing gets done quickly. Everyone is looking for an appeal, so the rare false-conviction is lost among all those looking for a second chance. All those on death-row have to wait for it to be proven again and again since nobody will believe a prisoner who claims innocence.
