Jason Momoa explains how the character's personality will be reflected in his costume

"Well, there might be some bit of orange and green. A bit of respect to prior work, but I think he is meaner now and upset ? look at what has been done to our oceans. That?s his world that has been polluted."

I think this is actually a cool idea. Pollution is as valid as any topic to depict in a movie. And it does give a reaosn for him to be a bit edgier than we're used to.

I am now imagining Aquaman with a breastplate of crushed plastic bottles, shoes made out of old tyres and a crown fashioned from used sanitory pads and coke cans.

DARK AND GRITTY!

Better dark and griity then silly and goofy and being the butt-end of jokes saying he sucks as a superhero.

I am liking the direction DC is taking so no skin off my nose.

How very topical of the man. He was still terrible in the Conan remake, though.

Well, I can definitely see it. They did a good job of capturing it in his costume design.

...So if Momoa's Aquaman is inspired by pollution, will he get to summon undead fish like in Brightest Day?

Batman dresses like a flying rodent and Superman is an alien who wears bright primary colors. There is an inherent level of silliness to comic book super heroes that people genuinely love. Aquaman being portrayed as Khal Drogo from Atlantis comes off as trying to hard to be taken seriously to me.

Yeah, but like... Have you seen some Aquaman comics though? Particularity the ones from the 90's? It ain't nothing they haven't tried before.

*sigh* Do we have to have everyone's costume be so grey? You can have the characters in bright costumes and still be serious. For gods sake in the animated series Aquaman was bare-chested and wearing green tights with a hook for a hand and he was still a serious and pretty cool character in my opinion.
Then again, i don't read the comics so I have no idea if this matches whatever he's like in those.

So the movie will be another "moral outrage" film disguised as a superhero movie. To add it's another attempt to try an make Aquaman more dark and serious in another vain attempt to walk away from the Superfriends stupidity because that's worked oh SO well in the past.

Yeah, much like anything from the DCCU these days I'll take a pass.

Well, I can't really bring myself to care. The fact is that they cannot make the character any worse. If this version fails then they've only maintained the status quo of the most forgettable member of the Justice league. If it's tolerable or even good then that's all a step up.

My guess is that his costume isn't inspired by pollution at all. It's inspired by them wanting to make a dark super hero.

Which is all we need, another dark superhero movie... *sigh* DC should hire Marvel's movie producers. We don't need more brooding super heroes or a paragon like Superman killing people and wantonly smashing through skyscrapers like thousands of lives didn't just end. Why is Marvel, a company with traditionally more serious heroes, doing better at conveying light heartedness and humor than the guys that brought us the traditional paragons of virtue and goodness?

No, but when his powers combine with four other members, he can summon....

Both Clark and Bruce have been involved in some good, serious storylines despite their silliness. Hell, Aquaman's darker runs haven't exactly been horrible, and he was taken seriously in the Justice League cartoon.

As with many fan outraged, I often do end up wondering if people have read/watched/whatever the source material. Not only is it nothing new, but it was like most comics...a lot of crap with some good stuff sprinkled in.

That's a lot of speculation based on information about character background that's been addressed in the comics before. I mean, yeah, I made a Captain Planet joke, but it was just a joke. It doesn't stop being a superhero movie because pollution is brought up. Just like Aquaman didn't stop being a comic because they did the same.

Or maybe DC is trying to do something different instead of copying every thing Marvel is doing and their take is just as valid?

And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, how about we wait til the film is actually out to judge it? MoS is far from being the darkest super hero film ever made.

I see Ronon settled just fine on DC Earth then, but why'd he ditch the magnum?

That would be nice if they were doing something different. You think brooding/dark superhero is new? It isn't.

Not only isn't it new but these depictions are also an affront to the spirit of their longstanding characters. These depictions do not inspire the way their paragons were meant to. They're going too heavy on Frank Miller with every character rather than just Batman and it's weird. Superman shouldn't be dark.

At least we all know that Aquaman needs some darkening up to be taken serious and DC has been trying that for years. so I'd either prefer dark aquaman or regal aquaman. One of the reasons why this even has a spot on my bookshelf:

I meant different from Marvel. I agree darker heroes aren't new. But neither are snarky, light hearted heroes.

The only thing Snyder is burrowing from Miller is the Powere Armor Batsuit and Batman and Superman fighting (and even then that's due to these iterations of the characters being unfamiliar with each other. When Miller did it, Superman and Batman had a long history as friends and allies against crime).

Besides, if its okay for Marvel to be more humorous, why is it wrong for DC to be more serious?

Why does it have to be one or the other, why can't it be both?
It's simply not good for any medium to retain the same thing for too long, and I can suspect that having all of DC's characters be dark and brooding could lead to some pretty severe apathy from viewers (I know I will). Ideally some characters should be dark and serious (say, Batman) while others a bit more upbeat for contrast (say, Superman).
Marvel doesn't get to get away with either, I've argued off the escapist for some time now that Antman should have used Hank Pym to have a more serious character to counter the others (especially in the run towards Civil War). Then again, I would have had Wasp in there as the plucky fun having superhero to keep it fairly lighthearted and possibly have a strong female character to win over that crowd, so what do I know...

Well we still haven't seen Suicide Squad or Dawn of Justice to judge how serious they're going to be. Same with Wonder Woman. Some are suggesting Shazam and Flash might have lighter tones.

Because it bastardizes DC's characters. They are paragon good characters facing classic evils. We have precious little of that and Marvel isn't doing that either. Superman is supposed to be a symbol of hope, of man's best. It's only in the more recent variants that we're exploring hypocrisy or something like that. So the movies we're getting aren't true to DC so much as just variant explorations. That would be cool if we also got to see the true blue adaptations of the traditional characters too albeit in modern settings of course.
