I'm reminded of the 1920s when people protested that "talkies" were ruining the artistry of silent cinema. Games can do narrative, and they can do it in a very different way than movies because of interactivity. Interactivity, despite what most people believe, does not mean gameplay. Gameplay is the sport - the skill based, competitive mechanics that reward success and punish failure. There are at least 2 other types of interaction in games. Narrative interaction is basically role playing (not like you do in jrpgs mind), and it can be incredibly engaging and exciting, ala Heavy Rain. Most games don't give you this though, so we're left with the one other thing that seperates games and movies. Setting exploration. No movie could ever hope to create a setting as alive and memorable as those of the best videogames. Liberty City is a stunning place to explore, not even lord of the rings or avatar come anywhere close to being as culturally interesting.

I'm sick of people overrating movies writing quality. Movies are boring and shit. 127 hours and The Social Network were 2 of the highest rated films last year, and I cannot imagine anyone being able to justify using them as an example of why movies are better than games. They're boring as fuck, and entirely style over substance. Movies are horribly written and the average movie is no better than the average game for writing. The pinnacle of movies is a bit ahead, and movies are more diverse (not just action), but the best games are well ahead of the average movie. The problem with games is they are almost always designed for you to kill a few hundred people, and subtle character development is hard to do in that case. LA Noire looks to be a good alternative.

What thriller movie is better than Heavy Rain? I love the genre, but most of the movies in it are horrendously bad. At least with heavy rain, there was a lot of scenes that made it interesting and the interactive element gave it something more memorable than any movie. A movie like Zodiac is really pitifully shallow. I suppose the 3 movies I have mentioned tend to be over-rated because they're all based on real life events and you can't criticise the writing much because of it. I'm struggling to think of any decent thriller movies. Se7en wasn't great. Cape Fear was terrible. There will be blood was brilliant, but not really similar. Taxi driver and chinatown are both extremely over-rated just because of acting performances. Is that the main difference? The acting in heavy rain wasn't good, but it's not the main strength of the game and doesn't need to be. Good acting ≠ good writing.

So...it's entertaining because he says "fuck" a lot?

'Cause, otherwise, I feel like I've missed the joke.
Yeah...I missed something here too. He's not really funny, nor was his rant all that thought-provoking, and his video was exceedingly boring to watch. Three strikes, he's out?

So ironic dickhead humor is pretty popular on the internet these days. I often find myself wondering at what point you cross the line from being ironic and are just left with dickhead. I'm still not sure where this line is but this guy has defiantly crossed it.

This is terrible. Someone that overweight, unattractive and irritating should not be on camera. Ugh. His voice is annoying, and he can't make a point without waffling on for ages about nothing. He's the worst kind of opinionated person; he keeps talking and talking and talking about crap until you give up and concede, and pats himself on the back for a job well done.

I usually give any new show a few episodes. I even gave de-rez and that stupid Whatever Saves The World bullshit a few goes before I gave it up. This ass got two minutes.

o...k...

I don't get it. Why do we need more videos people rambling into a microphone and calling it "commentary"? We have Yahtzee, Movie Bob (twice a week), and Extra Credits.
Word, the last thing this website needs more of is angry nerds ranting.

Good start, and I'm looking forward to seeing you cover a topic that hasn't always been covered in Extra credits and Extra punctuation.

Some may say that the rage is because this fat, ugly person (by social standards anyways) isn't the beatiful girl named Lisa Foiles. but i'll have to say no.
as a completly neutral person (a bisexual)
I would utterly despise such attitude wheter it came from an ugly or beatiful male or female.
mirite fellas?
i just wanted to point that out.
Edit: Please escapist, just put something really worthy of yourself.

Thomas Grip from Frictional Games who made Amnesia said: "The best stories in todays games are at the same level as the stories in the worst action movies"

You're mistaking being entertained with quality entertainment, for instance, Uncharted 1 and 2 both have weak, cookie cutter stories that merely break through the barrier of necessity that is logic.
The Uncharted games succeed where games should, as entertainment, but fails where games could be great in story.
I think someone is mistaking 'Best stories' for 'Most popular franchises', and mistaking 'Best stories' for 'Most complex stories'. How the story is told and the elements involved can be just as important as the story itself - Conan the Barbarian, for instance, is a story about a huge dude who stabs things with a sword. The way it's told, however, also introduces ideas on the dangers of blindly following religion, destiny, and the value of perseverance. In fact, there are a LOT of dumb movies with really strong subtext like this - Dawn of the Dead and The Godfather both come to mind.

The worst thing about this point, though, is that I honestly can't argue otherwise. There HAVE been games like this made - again, Silent Hill 2 springs to mind, along with Shadows of the Colossus, Planescape: Torment, even The Suffering and it's sequel have a few really strong, if simplistic, themes running through them. There just haven't been very many as of late.

Are we going to get any type of insight as to why this video was released?

Seeing as there was zero insight in the video itself...

Anyone recognise that background music?

It sounds familiar to me, I think it's from one of the Final fantasy games, I think FF9 but not quite sure.
Joker theme from FF9.

Edit: I mean Jester.
