Will Grand Theft Auto V Have No Balls?

Grand Theft Auto IV turned the GTA series into something more serious and dark, removing a lot of the ribald humor and outrageous gameplay. Some have said this caused the series to get too tame, and have already complained that GTA V's trailer hints at more of the same. So, has GTA lost its balls? Will GTA V be tame? Does it matter? Let the Jimquisition form your opinion for you!

Very nice. GTA series probably will make more sales simply because of its name brand. Regardless, I'll be getting both.

Yeah, view it in standard quality for the rest of it.

And that's actually an interesting point; having never played GTA IV, I never realised the direction the series had taken. I'm intrigued as to what Rockstar will do with GTA V.

I had a lot to say about this subject, but you've pretty much summed up everything I could have said.

Personally, I applaud Rockstar for realizing* that its depraved public image was hurting gamers in the media**, and responding with maturity and actual stabs at artyness. Few enough people will take that option when prompted.

* I don't know if this was a direct conscious choice on their part, but I'm glad it worked out this way.
** Not that this is the fault of Rockstar, mind, Jack Thompson and his ilk would have bitched about something else if not GTA.

Wonder if he noticed the colour of his tie when he said that :p

But but but... all games must be all things to all people. If I want to enjoy Game A for the wrong reasons, it's the responsibility of the publisher to cater to my every misguided whim. Don't tell me to play Game B. I want to play Game A and have it exactly like Game B. That's what America is all about. The land of selfish entitlement.

A tired point but one that bears repeating, especially when The Jimquisitor is the one repeating it.

And so knew that the bat at the end was gonna make an appearence.

Damn straight. I can't wait to get my hands on Saints Row The Third next week. And whenever GTA V comes out, I'll be in line to pick that up too. Hurray for winning twice! And anyone who says otherwise is getting hit in the face with a giant purple dildo.

This shit again? If you really think the only ones who want GTA to not be like GTA IV again live in America, you need a cold hard reality check.

Just what I've been thinking about lately. I'm sick of seeing SR vs GTA threads when they can both be enjoyed for different reasons.
Also, I fucking love Jim's expressive face.

Good ending. And keeping the face while holding a 1 meter long dildo in your hands.
Gave me a good laugh. Just like podtiod does.
Everybody should indeed check out podtiod. It really is amazing. And sometimes serious.

Man, I'm relieved to hear that things with outlandish dick jokes can't also be intelligent bits of satire and humor. Otherwise it might be possible for this very show to have intelligent criticism. But luckily for everyone, SR2 was clearly not thoughtful or interesting at all aside from just being wacky.

Thank God for Jim indeed. Now I can go back to playing Bach Bach Revolution on my piano with a metronome while sawing off my testicles. No fun ever needs to invade my life with all the thinking going on in it!

While I'm not debating the fact that the two games are offering a differing experience, I will offer that one of the two is redundent and kind of stupid. Suprisingly I'm talking about GTAV here.

See these games offer little to the player other than a sandbox, a physics engine, and series setpieces and props to be destroyed. That's what makes them enjoyable. It allows the player to create his own fun. Adding any sort of story depth or social commentary to the game just gets in the way of that. eg. a cutscene depicting the hard reality of a family struggling to stay afloat by living a life of crime has no place next to the players previous action of driving a mini van to the top of a multistory carpark and jumping it off the roof into the river for shits and giggles.

If rockstar want to go this route and release "grown-up" games they'll have to release a new IP with totally different game mechanics which complement a more serious playstyle. While not having played it myself it seem like LA Noir was a step in this direction. I'd say Red Dead was as well if it wasn't for it being so utterly boring.
