Joss Whedon. You poor man.

I feel very sorry for Joss Whedon. Almost every single show of his has been canceled.
Firefly.
Dollhouse.
Angel.
Who is at the bottom of all this? FOX. Reality shows, seem to be their speciality. Now, what I want to know is, why would Joss Whedon stay with FOX, if they are the ones who seem to hate Joss? Of course, I only watch the shows, I don't know much about how the "good" people at FOX work.

Firefly was cancelled because Fox couldn't get their shit together and schedule it at the right time. There's a reason a show that ended years ago still has a giant fanbase shouting for more.

That being said, going BACK to a company that has repeatedly screwed you over is the man's own damn fault.

FIrefly failed because it was an odd ball show, Angel failed because, well, it was ahead of its time (An Emo Vampire show would do EXCELLENT right now). Dollhouse I'm told was pretty good, but I have no idea.

There is also the fact that they showed the Train Job episode first instead of the pilot episode......I'm sure that helped factor in a problem too

Firefly failed because of Fox's scheduling conflicts. Nobody could figure out when the thing was on because they kept moving it around, so nobody watched it because it was never on at the same time for long.

EDIT for the user above me: Yeah, I forgot to mention that they showed the episodes all out of order. -facepalm- The fact that Firefly failed was all on Fox's end. Had nothing to do with the show's quality.

Well, the Firefly cancellation was just an epic mistake. And they were stupid about airing it on different nights of the week. Fox doomed that show with their ineptitude.

With Dollhouse they actually gave him a second season when the ratings were abysmal, which I actually didn't get. Dollhouse was okay, but it really wasn't his best stuff. I can understand that cancellation. It might have gotten better, but I tuned out sometime in season 2 when the plot was getting too muddied.

And Angel got 5 seasons out of it. Not bad, seeing as how they reached the magical 100 episodes which apparently means syndication gold in the entertainment industry. Imagine if Firefly had made it that far.

But he does fairly well for himself. I read an interview where he said he was going to do more things like Dr. Horrible, since on the web he is free to experiment to his heart's content. I think that's pretty awesome actually. Bypass the networks all together.

That'd be pretty sweet. His run writing for X-Men was of fantastic quality (particularly the unbreakable arc, which was simply fucking epic) so he certainly knows how to treat comic book material well.

I agree on both counts. Fox was all kinds of stupid when it came to Firefly.

Well, whenever I hear most fans talk about the show they kinda remind me of the Portal-fanbase. I loved that game, but the fans not ever being able to put a cork in it, ultimately ruined it for me. So, whenever I hear a fanbase fiercely praising something, I try to stay away from it.

Firefly was great and Angel was okay but Dollhouse was terrible in it's second season. I read somewhere that Angel's cancellation was due to Joss pushing for an earlier renewal.
Firefly was aired in the wrong order and at different times.

Angel got 5 seasons so it's not like it did that badly since it was only a spin-off from Buffy which had 7 seasons they were basically the same show (so 12 seasons in all) and really owed a lot of their success to the X-files, a little less horror, more humor, more coherent mythology but otherwise done in the same style.
As for the rest dollhouse/Firefly were never that great nor amazingly popular, the movie Serenity didn't do well and Firefly never got any interest in sindication from other networks unlike Buffy or the X-files.
