"Gabriel Westmar. Tomorrow at noon you are required to be at the Mages Grand Hall."

The previous day, the young Hydromancer had received a message from one of the strangers that had recently arrived at the Academy. In the wake of their arrival, a flurry of activity and gossip had sprung up: some said they were here to learn about Academy events and return to a superior, while others believed them to be barbarians here to kill them all or enslave them. Gabriel, however, held no such superstitions, nor any prejudice toward the newcomers. Rather, since they had shown no signs of hostility that he could tell, he welcomed their presence, even if it was for a short time.

Upon arriving at the Hall's entrance just before the expected time, having eaten a decent-sized breakfast, Gabe found that a pair of armed and armoured guards stood blocking his way inside. They looked him up and down: he had elected to don his mage's robes for the occasion, even though they were clearly too large for his slight - some might say scrawny - figure. The hem of the robes, originally sky-blue, was scuffed and dirty from trailing behind Gabriel. He had tried his best to make himself presentable, but was probably failing dismally due to his small stature and hair that just refused to co-operate.

Recognising Gabriel as one of the people that had been summoned to the meeting, the guards stepped aside to let him pass through. Pushing open the door, Gabe slipped inside and closed the door behind him. From there he made his way to a section of the stands where he found a considerable number of other mages sitting or standing, talking amongst themselves. He hurried to join them, though he hung back a little from the rest of the group, not wanting to just walk up to someone and say hi.

There was no sign of any of the newcomers to the Academy. Presumably they were inside the room nearby, otherwise the mages wouldn't need to be where they were. Gabriel wondered why that was the case; theories eluded him at the present time.

Hello, all. A while back Stranger offered me the option of joining Elementals, and I have finally decided to take him up on his offer.
Meet Gabriel, ladies and gentlemen.

Name: Gabriel David Westmar (Gabe for short)
Age: 19
Gender: Male

Element: Hydromancer
Rank: Mage

Appearance: Gabriel has fair skin, with short, light brown hair, dark blue eyes and a generally clear complexion. Standing at 5'5", he is both short and underweight for his age. What little you see of his slight figure, that isn't covered by his robe, is somewhat muscular: Gabe is fairly strong despite his lightly built figure.

His mage's robe, which is a bit too big for him and trails behind him as he walks, is primarily coloured a plain royal blue to match his eyes, with white and sky-blue trims. Gabriel normally wears regular clothing underneath, and sometimes chooses not to wear the robe due to it occasionally making him uncomfortable.

Demeanour: Gabe is an idealist: he often wonders why mages and ordinary people can't just get along. When he visits areas outside of the Academy, which he does as often as possible despite it being a rare chance, he does so in regular clothing as opposed to his mage's robe, and tries to conceal his abilities as much as possible so as not to alarm the people or be shunned and feared, which he dislikes immensely. Some would call him naive in this respect, since many are disinclined to believe that mages and ordinary humans would be able to get along given historical events. They would be right.

Gabriel understands that people fear mages, but he doesn't reciprocate that feeling towards non-magical people. Instead he thinks of them as blinded by their hatred, and believes mages and mundane humans can live together in peace once the barriers of fear are broken down.

Biography: Born into a family of four including himself, Gabriel's parents and older brother were a mixed bag of professions: while his father and brother were talented merchants, his mother was a seamstress and artist. At one point in the year, when Gabriel was eight years of age a torrential rainstorm hit their little settlement, and the little boy was caught in the rain on the way home... but when he entered the house, the entire family was shocked to find that he was completely dry. Not even a drop of water was on him or his clothes.

Soon after, Gabe was packed up and sent to one of the many minor academies where people were tested for signs of magical power. Sure enough, the lad was recognised as a Hydromancer, and was enrolled into the appropriate school of magic. Gabriel's family, however, only contacted him rarely despite the fact that he sent them many letters. The first time was to say that while they didn't like that he had magical power, they had little choice but to send him to the academies: they were afraid that he would become an unpredictable force of ruin if left unchecked. Gabriel had been confused by this message, and it wasn't until many years later that he realised that non-magical people feared mages like him and his fellows.

While Gabriel's power over water is still developing, he seeks to both rise to the rank of Adept in due course, and to help mundane people realise that not all mages are psychopaths hellbent on destruction. If people would understand that peace could be found among mages and non-magical people, he reasons, surely the mutual fear (for the most part) could dissolve and peace would finally reign supreme over the lands once more.

Drew found himself laughing quietly. Sometimes I wish I could see the thought process Fei goes through sometimes... if only for the humor involved in it... He turned and noticed a late arrival. "Huh... whose that?" he kept his eye on him for a minute.

Fei turned when her brother pointed out a new person. "Oh, he's a hydromancer, like me!" she grinned, waving excitedly for a few seconds. "I wonder why he's here." Since they were around the same age and rank she considered actually saying hi, but didn't. Initially. Eventually she got too curious. "I'm Fei, I'm a hydromancer too! I've seen you before. What are you doing here? You're kinda late if you're here for the meetings, they're almost done. Did you know we might see dragons?! Oh, and the Prime Minister's married to a princess..." she forgot why she was talking to him, trailing off into a series of useless babble.

As he walked over to the other Hydromancer, Gabriel mentally froze up under the barrage of words thrown at him. The speaker was a girl about his age; he recognised her from classes they shared together, but... he had never brought himself to speak to her, even when they had worked together on occasion. It wasn't for lack of trying, of course: he realised that the girl - Fei - was extremely talkative, though it might be expected given the fact there were strangers in the Academy. A lot of lips had loosened.

Introducing oneself was common practice when meeting people, but Gabriel found that the same mental block that had prevented him from talking to Fei in the past stopped him from doing so now. To avoid the situation as best he could, he turned his gaze to the guy standing next to Fei. He had no problem speaking if it was directed at people older than him. Addressing the girl directly was the issue. "Umm... hi," he eventually said, unsure of how best to deal with the situation. "I suppose I should introduce myself... Gabriel Westmar."

"Nice to meet you." he said, more as a formality. He didn't really know the person, but didn't want to seem rude. "Sleep in or something like that?" he joked. He noticed Fei had kept rambling. "Fei, don't give our new guest here to much to worry about. And try to keep your thoughts coherent..." he stifled another laugh. "He seems like a Hydromancer. You know him from any classes?"

"Gabriel Westmar? Hmm... I think I've seen you around." She inspected him closer, grinning when she noticed the wear the hem of his robe. "I think in weather class maybe? Or was it swimming lessons?" She twirled around him, giggling. "I'm Fei~ Fei Kyarra. This is my brother Drew. Kyarra obviously. Well don't mind us, you just have to wait for the weird people to call you. It's nothing hard, they just tell you some things, and you can ask some questions. This can calm you down!" She took out a lollipop from in her robe and held it out for him.

The Prime Minister leaned back, his grin seeming to widen as Raven presented her questions and case. Once she was done, he gave out a light chuckle.

"'Raven', was it? I think you might want to think this through a little more than you are. It isn't as if I need you. You can stay here for another extensive amount of your days, stewing in your classes and thoughts, trying to get ahead of the others in your games and tricks, and hoping that someday you get lucky and learn something important enough to be considered." The Prime Minister said simply, looking directly at Raven as he spoke.

"You want incentive? I will give you a very simple one you can take or leave: Either you come to a city which rarely if ever sees visitors and help me with a task that I have specifically selected you out of the many thousands I could have chosen from, or you can sit around here and keep wondering how you can get back at those who wronged you. I give you the choice so you can decide of this opportunity is worth your time, because if you don't think so then I don't need to. I hope that is clear enough for you to think about."

With that, the Prime Minister crossed his fingers, patiently awaiting the response of the more worried Nightshade.

Seth watched the late newcomer get through the doors, obviously supposed to be there unless he managed to somehow get past the guards outside. Seeing him nervously approach the small group as they chatted, he couldn't help but grin. He could just tell by looking that this guy was shy, or something along those lines. As he introduced himself, Seth stood from where he had decided to sit on the bench to greet the newcomer....and size him up a bit.

"Gabe? I am Seth, Pyromancer, fighter, barbarian, and just recently been invited along this cruise. Nice to meet ya, even though you are kind of late. Course, I figure they don't care since they already said something along those lines. You get invited by full name and all that stuff by the guards too?" Seth said, hoping that himself stepping in would get Fei to stop overwhelming the poor fellow with conversation and thoughts.

And they have seen each other before? Must not have spoken much edgewise. Not that I should be too surprised.

His eyes. That's what Raven noticed. Those eyes of the human sitting across from the three mages seemed to bore right through her as he rattled off some info that she had not shared before. I don't think I even told this guy my name. His damn guards sure didn't. What kind of force are we dealing with here?

He continued his spiel, seeming hitting every element of what Raven wanted to do. Get ahead of the others, get revenge on those idiots back home, he knew everything. All right so this guy is freaking me out, how the hell does he know all this? This...this doesn't make any sense. He can't see into my mind or anything, can he? Once he finished talking, he looked directly at Raven, the young woman's mind working on overdrive trying to comprehend what she had just heard.

It took a few seconds, Raven still mulling over what she just heard from this man before coming to a decision. "Fine," she said. "I'll come. But I have one other question then. Why me? I know Elise and Morgan are higher up in the class, and there are plenty of other willing sheep to chose from, so why did you pick me?"

Gabriel tried to say something in response to Fei's questions and comments, quietly opening and closing his mouth a couple of times; he tried to be a little discreet about doing so, though. Even with the presence of her brother and the Pyromancer introducing himself as Seth, he couldn't bring himself to directly address the girl. Come on, you idiot! he mentally chided himself. Even one word would be an achievement, and a considerable one at that.

The Hydromancer was a little amused by Fei's offer, though he didn't show it. Seeing someone around his age with an interest in candy akin to that of a younger child was a little weird. He did, however, accept the lollipop so as not to be rude, and slipped it into an inside pocket of his robe with a nod of thanks.

Turning his attention to the Pyromancer - Seth - he nodded politely a second time. "Yes... was it as unnerving for you as it was for me? The guard just stomped up, recited the message once and walked out. Didn't even react when I threw a book at him... I don't know why I was singled out. I mean, I'm nothing special. I'm not even that good a mage, quite honestly." He shrugged, both perplexed as to why he had been picked out and hating himself for being unable to speak to Fei. Again, one simple little word would be an incredible amount of progress.

The Prime Minister nodded as Raven picked out the names of the two other mages in the classes. While it was never noticeable hostility, it seemed that he slightly relaxed upon Raven's agreement with the last question.

"To put it simply, you have traits, ideals, motivations, and an elemental power that I found desirable. Elise and Morgan are better mages, sure, but they do not possess what I want. Having skills doesn't make you better than another, it just is an arbitrary rank they toss around. I can assure you that there are several others on the table as well who I will be meeting with at a later time, with their own particular skills and ideals. I can only learn so much from my sources, and the only way to verify is to check oneself. And as you can see, I have done that, as you have been verified."

The Prime Minister glanced towards Aaron once more, who made a familiar motion of pointing at the door. The Prime Minister nodded quietly and slightly to the man, turning his attention back to the mages.

"Now....if any of you have any more questions, I believe there are a few others who I need to speak with. But do not feel rushed, for I am a reasonable man."

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Seth couldn't help but laugh when he heard the mage had tossed a book at one of the metal men. Though he wasn't surprised that the man didn't react, it was entertaining that he had a chance to react at least.

"Yeah, stomping, announcing, then taking off. Surprised you tossed something at them though. I would think twice about doing something like that, but then I guess it comes with knowing that the guy standing in front of me in metallic armor might have a few tricks that will kill me faster." Seth said with a grin.

"Course, why they chose me never really occurred to me. I mean, I am going to be doing something I think very few people have ever done. If they want me to come along, I don't have any reservations. Not too much really keeping me here. Who knows, maybe they will have a position open for me or something!"

Seth seemed particularly happy that things had gone over so well and so simply. He didn't bother (as usual) with many niceties or formal speaking. He was in a good mood, and with more company coming along for the ride he was happy to chat with them.

"You're not a barbarian Seth!" Fei protested, turning away from the Hydromancer. She took out a piece of gum. "I bet no mage can fight like you can! They chose you because you're amazing, like my brother and me!" She held out her arms in exaggeration. Again, the trip had turned into a field trip for her, and she had even forgotten about the dragons.

"Drew, we should visit Oublie before we go on the trip." They hadn't visited their parents in a while, partially because they tried to convince the pair not to stay in the academy, but she wanted to at least tell them they were going to Kerbones.

Seth was clearly happy with being picked for the group regardless of the reasons behind it. Gabriel, however, was not so easily swayed. He wanted to know why he, a less than skilled mage when compared to others even at his level, had been picked to be a part of this strange bunch, to do whatever it was they were going to do. Apprehension began to work its way into his thoughts; he didn't like the situation, even if there was a fellow Hydromancer in the group. She was probably better at magic than he was, he figured.

"Well, I guess it's your decision on whether you want to know why you were chosen. I certainly do," he answered Seth, shuffling his feet in mild awkwardness.

"Oubile?" Drew sighed. He was still on good speaking terms with his parents, and he did love them, but they did constantly bug him about encouraging Fei to go to the academy. Sure, they never outright said it was his fault she discovered her powers and left, but subtlety wasn't exactly a strength of the family. It wasn't so much that they preferred Fei, it was more that they wanted at least one "normal" child.

He knew telling them about this would result in nothing but headaches for him. "I don't know... we probably won't have the time to stop by anywhere."

"They might know where Kerbones is, and they might have been there! Besides, what if they come looking for us and can't find us at the Academy? What if something happens to them? What if this is the last time we see them?" She liked Oublie, it was full of shops and people that were nice to them. Most of the residents there were family of the mages, but weren't magically inclined themselves. Also, her parents gave her a lot of stuff when she visited. "Pleeeeeease? Seth can take me if you don't want to go, right Seth?" She stared at both of them with big kitty cat eyes, hoping to get someone to bring her.

Nydia was somewhat surprised to hear the Nightshade agree to go along given her evident disdain for the idea at first. This man was incredibly persuasive and perceptive. But then, those were crucial qualities for one who leads a nation. And now that he had mentioned it, Nydia did have a few questions she'd like answered. "I'd like to know how you know so much about us. You're surprisingly well informed for someone who just got here yesterday."

"Ah, also how long will we be gone? And how soon will we be leaving?" Nydia asked, knowing they would be leaving fairly soon judging by the Aaron's hurry to get things moving. But if there was time, she'd like to have the chance to say goodbye to her father since she wasn't entirely sure when or if she'd see him again.

Oh another mage! I thought this was all of us. Well the more the better
"Wow someone got here later than me, I'm glad." Said Edward directed to Gabriel, laying down on the bench with all the extra space he had until the nightshade came back. He kept his book over his eyes not even planning of reading it.

What does he mean, desirable? Am I really that appealing to these bastards? Raven's mind was checked out. The buttons that the Prime Minister had managed to press so effortlessly had knocked her out of her default setting and and left pretty much a blank slate. She didn't even have a negative notion at the fact that it took the Lightdweller to ask what she had been thinking. She put her head down in her hands, still trying to get around the break that got put in there. Is this really what I'm doing? Just putting myself further into these bastards hands? I don't even know any more.

Seth couldn't help but give a small grin as Fei attempted to tell him that he wasn't a barbarian. He knew he was in the eyes of many though. He was not as absent minded as they all liked to think of him to be....well, most of the time anyways.

"Well Gabe, you can go in there and be curious all you want. Just saying that this is something I don't think will roll around again. Might as well take it for what it is. Besides, change in scenery would be good for a change. Especially if I spend some of it in the air." Seth said to Gabe, turning his attention to the now pleading Fei.

"Hey now, I'm sure you will get to visit your family and everyone again. Don't you fret about that. Just gotta plan for it, though it will be up to our hosts if we are able to visit there right away, cause I don't think they will land for just anything." Seth replied, giving a small shrug. Being swayed by kitten eyes was something Seth had long ago missed, and this was no exception.

[hr]

The Prime Minister changed his attention to Nydia, his gaze sweeping over her for a bit before he spoke.

"Ah, Nydia Freecs. You should realize I can't just out and tell you how I come by all my information, for that is a lot more risk than I could give to anyone." The Prime Minister said with a small nod.

"However, how long we will be gone I cannot say. The weather could prove to be somewhat tricky, or the tasks I have set might come up with new complications, or some events could turn out that I am not expecting. Ultimately, the time spent there I am not at pleasure to judge. How long we will be till we leave though.....Tomorrow afternoon. We will be fully prepped and leaving around then, and you will need to be aboard by then. Plenty of time to do what you need to, say goodbyes and get your affairs in order. I am not heartless, and I imagine you would have affairs that need attending..."

The Prime Minister let his gaze sweep over his guests once more, seeming to take in every detail that he could. With another nod of his head, he seemed satisfied by the answers.

"Now....I hope that is all there is to it. Anything else that is pressing?"

"Don't worry, Fei. We'll get to see them eventually." he hoped that she would drop the point. "Are you guys having any doubts about this whole thing?" He wasn't really doubting that he wanted to go, but he wanted to try and get some other people's perspective on the matter.

Nina pulled Nat along with her. "We're going to be late Nat. You shouldn't of been playing with those books of yours for so long." she said panting as she pulled on her friends arm forgetting about the fact that she was wasting Nat's time by going on and on about how she was going to use her fire and air magic together, like she did many many times all day, every day.

"Dammit Nina you're the reason we're late. You can't shut up about anything including how I need to get a boyfriend. I don't need a boyfriend dammit." Nat said ripping her arm out of Nina's hands in front of the metal guards. "Can you please let us in? We have been invited to this meeting yet my friend is an idiot and made us late." she said to the guards.

The guards stepped aside to let them in. Nat stepped into the back like usual for her and listened trying to not draw attention to her then Nina ran into her and hugged her. "Sorry we're late." she yelled completely ruining her plain. "Dammit Nina."
