J-RPG fan here yes i'm handheld gamer (PSP+DS), i don't think we are being forced on handhelds there are plenty of goon ones on PS3,360. But, support cheap-to-make handheld J-RPGs, the legend of heroes trails in the sky is effing amazing and it don't have all that fancy graphics or all dialogues voiced.

personally i cant stand JRPG. I hate them to death. they are too childish.

but id say best jrpg these days are on handheld..
You need to differentiate between fake maturity and youthful inspirational themes my friend. The average realistic-looking FPS is much more childish than the average Jrpg since it doesn't actually do anything to evoke higher level cognitive functions. Kill everything while looking at realistic depictions of what killing stuff looks like isn't much of a challenge sadly.

You may see the simple fantasy settings that when taken at face value come off rather childish but if you dig in a bit deeper you will discover that there is quite a bit of meaning to be found in the lair of the cute or preposterous.

You need to have your disbelief thrown off a mountain and take everything seriously, if you start making fun of what you're playing or not "buying" stuff you've already lost the battle and deprived yourself of an amazing experience.
JRPG doesnot suit me. good for them who like it.

Im not into anime and kawaii thing. i hate anime to death and they mostly based on them
if you don't like it, then why you even here in this tread? just to troll? go away. People have different tastes, and i for one rather play mediocre j-rpg than boring TF2.

Have you played Radiant Historia? Probably my favorite JRPG to come out in quite awhile. Game was phenomenal despite that it would be doable on a SNES.

Sadly it's not available in my country.

I really need to catch up on those. I've only played about 6 of those games I think. I notice a lot of PS3 JRPGs get horrible reviews. I've learned to ignore that though, otherwise I'd miss out on quite a few good games. Resonance of Fate I've seen 6.5 out of 10 ratings. I loved that game. The combat system was like nothing I have ever seen before and it kept me hooked for 72 hours. I still want to go back and do the new game+.

Hah, that collection almost mirrors my own with the difference of a few of them being imports.
There definitely is enough of em on PS3.

NMH isn't a Jrpg though, it's an action game :D.

Cross Edge, a game with darkstalkers and disgaea chars together (among others) and probably the best turn based battle system ever made got a 3.5/10 on IGN, mainly cause it used 2D sprites. Reviews are beyond meaningless lol.

Funny you should mention that, OP; all but one of the JRPGs I've either beaten or gotten to the final dungeon of (corrupted save files are the bane of my existence) were on handhelds, although my favored type of JRPG is actually 8-bit remakes and throwbacks, not so much 16 bit -- the remakes of the early Dragon Quest games have been some of the best experiences I've ever had on a handheld. Something about the pick up and play nature of a handheld actually helps me to find the time to finish the stupid things -- it's the same reason I play so many online FPSs. Two or more hours at a stretch is something I can almost never muster. Five to ten minutes? Sure, why not? Any game I beat has to either be really short, or susceptible to the death of a thousand papercuts.

I need to go on a shopping spree. Another one that highly interests me but also got a horrible reviews is Hyperdimension Neptuna.

Another game that I'd like to draw attention to is Nier. Horrible horrible reviews. Game looked interesting I saw it for cheap, and bought it on a whim. I loved that game. Interesting charaters, good action/rpg gameplay, and a great story. The reviews were stupid. Really the only two things they bitched about is the OPTIONAL quests requiring a lot of backtracking, and even stupider that the protagonist is ugly looking.

Do you have a PSP and/or DS column? I'd like to see it if it isn't too much trouble.

Not a dedicated JRPG fan either, but I started playing FFVI on my PSP with the help of an emulator and I have to say it's rather fun; haven't tried any of the new releases on it though. Do Dragonball and Dynasty Warriors count :3 ?

You remember Drag-on Dragoon on ps2? (which was called Drakengard in the west)

Nier is a sequel of one of it's many endings. It's by the same people, so if you have some experience with that you should know what to expect. It's epic and dark and not all that simple and easygoing, unlike most Jrpgs.

Reminds me of the reviews for Mazes of Fate, a western RPG for the GBA. Almost all of the reviewers panned it, not because it was a bad game, but because they apparently didn't like Eye of the Beholder style dungeon crawlers. Their loss; it's a great game. Literally every complaint they had (or almost every complaint; there were a few bugs and some iffy spots in the translation from Spanish to English)was actually a well executed feature of the subgenre, and therefore a plus for the target audience. I actually wound up buying it because the complaints in the negative reviews sounded like things I would enjoy.

Did you actually enjoy 'Last Rebellion'?

I played all the games you have in your picture and I kinda hated Last Rebellion.
I also have Tales of Vesperia/Xillia, Enchanted Arms, Folklore, Rune Factory - Oceans, Trinity - Souls of Zill O'll, Ninokuni, Dark/Demon Souls...

I'm playing far too much RPGs :p

Though my PSP collection is probably even bigger than the PS3 RPG collection.

Given I own both a DS and a PSP, I've a few handheld jrpg games spread across my room. Can't remember their names right now granted and posting on the phone so yeah.... Always interested in finding new one's for my collection, but I admit I'm not all that knowledgable about these kinds of games due to living in europe and lack of localizations.....
I can feel you, I lived in Europe for 17 years, I know how it is with the lack of games. We didn't even get Chrono Trigger....

My solution was to learn Japanese and move to another continent. Comes highly recommended! :D
