Any from your collection you'd particularly recommend? I've already got FFXIII, and I've heard some good things about Valkyria Chronicles and Star Ocean, but what about the others?
Well i would recommend valkyria Chronicles , resonance of fate and White knight chronicles out of that list but if your going to pick up that one just get the second one as it comes with the first one included

Oh and to answer the topic yes I am a portable gamer it's the best place Jrpgs this gen apart from a ew gems like xenoblade chronicles that was one the wii suprisingly

No I'm not and I'm pissed that they keep catering to handheld players instead of console gamers. I wanted to play Dissida, Crisis Core, Birth By Sleep, and Type-0 yet I cant because they dont want to make games for consoles anymore. Dont they know how much more money they would make if they would actually make a Kingdom Hearts game on PS3?

Star Ocean = great battle system, but the other elements like characters and story didn't really do it for me. I prefer Second Story and Til the End of Time. Even so, Last Hope is worth playing and its a solid game. But, be warned though it features one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen, kay? (I'm sure people who have played the game know exactly who I'm referring to, kay?)

Hey, Lymle was adorable!

Just watch this scene, how can you NOT like her :p

Why are they called JRPGs and not just RPGs?

Is it a way to let people know that this isn't a game to play around your WW2 veteran grandfather or what?
It is because nowadays there is a huge rift between western and Japanese RPGs. Some people love WRPGs but absolutely can't stand JRPGs. They are so different they feel like different genres.

For quite a while I played exclusively on handhelds. My preference has shifted somewhat, but I'm still a big fan of portable titles. My favorite this gen is Persona 3 Portable. Also put a decent amount of time into Disgaea 2, Pokemon, and Crisis Core. Would add Tekken 6, but I traded in my PSP copy for the PS3 version...not exactly pleased with the abomination that is the scenario campaign and the absence of an offline ranking system, but at least it plays more or less the same. And that's what matters...right? Right?

yeh i have PSP one, DS is sister's so i only borrow games from my j-rpg loving friends. Note some PSP j-rpg are not available for my country so i do what needs to be done.
Since I have quite a few of those titles, I'd just like to say I wholeheartedly approve of that collection. *Thumbs up*

I've got Star Ocean 4 on my xbox, but because microsoft is awful at using proper hardware, I haven't been able to enjoy it as much as I can. Kept freezing on me a lot until I installed it, but I had to delete it to gain space to finish some other things I wanted to do as well at some point. Should finish it as I had gotten to the weird alien planet near the end...
same here i didn't finish it on xbox =) but i did do it on PS3 (yes, yes i did buy same game twice......T_T) SO4 is much better no freezes and bugs AND newly found Japanese voices makes experience so SO much better :D

You remember Drag-on Dragoon on ps2? (which was called Drakengard in the west)

Nier is a sequel of one of it's many endings. It's by the same people, so if you have some experience with that you should know what to expect. It's epic and dark and not all that simple and easygoing, unlike most Jrpgs.
I actually recently discovered that they were related. I recall seeing Drakengard in the past but I never picked it up. Now I think I might try to track it and 2 down as they are likely fairly cheap now.

Well I bought Dark Souls, my first JRPG and I love it. One of the greatest games I have ever played. Its a shame it doesn't have more of a following but I think that is a bigger problem with the marketing of the game. I haven't played any other ones, nor have I been particularly interested in them. Dragon's Dogma looks interesting, but I'm not sure if I will buy it.

Yeah to play modern JRPG's pretty much means you're playing on a portable I can count a total of 4 RPG's from Japan on MY PS3 shelves, Demons Souls and Dark Souls (which look and feel more like western rpgs) Valkyria Chronicles (amazing game) and Final Fantasy 13 (What the hell Square?)
it's just you opinion, i have many j-rpgs on my PS3 and pretty much all of them i enjoyed.
here all my PS3 j-rpgs.
Quite the excellent collection, I'm impressed. I still need to get a couple of those games (hopefully I'll get White Knight 2 for Christmas...).

Can't wait for XIII-2. I enjoyed XIII well enough, but it looks like they've fixed a lot of the original game's problems in the sequel. A little iffy about the new story, though...
thanks^_^ i hope XIII-2 story will turn out alright or at least will have happy end. Enjoyed XIII too so already pre-ordered XIII-2. oh and at last my Atelier Totori arrived so gonna pick it up tomorrow, so collection got a new friend :D

Yup, it's either:

1)Learn Japanese and import, expensive and takes time and effort.
2)Play games in English aimed at American or sometimes British people (like Dragon Quest VIII for example, a game best played without any voice acting due to it's horrid accents), with humor and cultural elements completely foreign to you, sacrificing a lot of the enjoyment you'd have.
3)Don't play anything that's not a racer or a soccer game
4)Make your own games.

I ended up getting into anime when I was not old enough to do either thing, so it made deciding on #1 all that much easier :D.
Yup I decided a few months ago to go for route #1 I have a long long road ahead of me but hopefully I will get there eventually.

I do enjoy JRPGS (not all of them obviously) but handheld gaming has never really gelled with me except with 3 exceptions which were K-on Hougako tea time and Dissidia duodecim for psp and puzzle quest on the ds all of which I played (and still play) to death oh and Crisis core was fun as well (some side missions did get tedious). But overall I prefer my console games and Valkyria Chronicles along with Xenoblade chronicles are my favourite games this generation so far, its just nicer to sit back and watch it on a large tv and drink in their beautifully crafted worlds.

That being said earlier in the year I was travelling a lot living out of a backpack for 3 months and being able to play Jrpgs on a handheld was very welcome.

It's a mix of Panzer Dragoon and Dynasty warriors gameplay, if that makes sense. Both nothing special, the story however is beyond epic. If you've watched or read Berserk, expect something like that, with horrid demon rape, incest and pedophilic elements to boot, all tackled seriously and with a straight face. You wouldn't expect the game to be released by someone as big as SE lol.

One of the endings which is what links it with Nier has you basically take the fight into "real" Tokyo and the effects of the fight (which I won't spoil) are what transform the world into what we see in Nier.
